highest Priority of suggestions :
---------------------------------------------------
* Mouse support
* DVD Ripper (maybe autocreate/name the dir to copy to also)
* bios flashing
Good suggestions :
-----------------------------------
* Mounting ISO files on the xbox HDD as D: (just gotta fix some issues with fatx3 first - since it still has the fatx 2gb limit... fixing that soon )
* be anle to set up an fserve or an xdcc server (a lot of us have 120 gig hdds and a lot of media weed like to share)
* Also A Live Text Editor Would Be Nice Too, So You Could Edit Your .ini Files In Real Time.
* Some Utility To Import Your Own Skins For AvaLaunch.
* In Game Reset Triggers.
* Calibrational screen (for people with older tv's that cut off the edge of the screen)
* How about a cool "freeze/unfreeze" feature? ( zip down unused games ++ )
* ISO 9660 Fat System support in the File Browser.
* bios editing
* How about more download update things? Like being able to update XBMP from within the dash?
*How about an Xbox Scene news viewer?
* password protect stuff
*User login w/wo password (with safety reset) 2 there personalized Dash setting for that user . That way no other person could screw-up other user settings.
* HD support 480p 720p 1080i (I have a sony wga xbr and few things really take advantage of these formats yet)
*making it so you can ftp stuff onto memory cards is nice
*a hard disk defragging utility
*using the numbers on the remote to quickly launch specific xbe files
*positioning and sizing the menu box
*positioning and sizing the game icons
*using own screenshots or videos for game icons
*disabling and enabling the infos like version number in the .xml
*I'd like to be able to change fonts in real time, or atleast in settings get a little preview of how the different fonts look, and then I'd have to reboot to get them working
*I'd like to see topic up in the left corner, where it says #channelname
*I want a option to change the region settings for games (USA, Japan or Europe & Australia.)
*I would like the ability to play a random short video instead of the cube intro.
*Since most HDD support S.M.A.R.T and you can read temperatures with it -- could it possible added to Avalaunch?
*i like the xbox saves online feature, but for the next release, i'd like to be able to have a number of slots to choose from
* The Mp3 feature, let it play random
*rom autolaunch
*It would be great if you could add external USB hard drive support.
Could-be ideas ( but dont get your hopes up )
-------------------------------------------------------------------
*a feature to auto patch the new games
* A Built In Online Gaming App That Will Support The Commonly Used X-Box Live Gaming HeadSet.
* a list of irc servers that you can scroll down and pick one then it will auto connect instead of haveing to do a /server everytime
* Network keyboard
* animation in skins support
* A plugin system, so others can make additions to the dash without having to request it or muck around with the whole sourcecode (if it will, indeed, be opensource one day).
* scripting support for the irc client
* Online voice chatting using Xbox Live headset
* lightgun support
Wont implement
-------------------------
* Inet browser
(TJ used to work for Opera Software, and has a contract that will get him sued if he touches a web-browser (or anything near one) for a few more years)
* Tv guide like in xbmp, however you can bookmark a certain prog so that when it is the time that it's on Avalaunch alerts you.
* xbox wma support in the back ground ( does play a lot of other things tho )
* how about AIM and MSN
* Maybe a ICQ client ?
*ntsc/pal change for special games.. This because you need to turn on and off xbox to set the mode.
Suggestions that we have implemented :
----------------------------------------------------------
* .sfv checker
* One chosen MP3 plays as default when dash is open (Xport has implemented this in lots of his emu's i'm sure he would assist you with this)
* DVD remote can be used for all the sections (i.e. even for the onscreen keyboard in the IRC)
* In IRC the screen can be zoomed in or out.
* maybe add Avalaunch version displayed on screen so we know what version we have.
* UnRar and UnZip implemented in the File Browser.
* A button-press-and-hold to speed up the Scroll in the Menus (aka hold L Button in evox).
* Ability to move/max(min)imize the windows for the irc/telnet clients.
* File manager (of xtoolbox) functionality/looks
* FTP client
* Xbox gaming name editor (gotta love this for Halo)
* A Save Game manager. ( kinda )
* Screen Saver for Avalaunch
* Keyboard support needs repeate keys. In .39 this didnt work I have yet to install .40c
* I didnt see any referance to this yet but FXP support would be nice.
* Auto-update (if that were legal/possible)
*get screenshot001.bmp, screenshot002.bmp, screenshot003.bmp, etc etc
*a .rar or .zip extraction program should be built in (rar2.90 is a bit bumpy - but zip works )

we could add xbins instalogin FTP access....but we're not going to. Its made to "protect" against mirroring which was a massive bandwidth killer.
We're cooperating with xbins, and we'll work out something different for making it easy to download binaries.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but it might come it handy to implement an automatic filerenamer/default.xbe that would allow you to rip Xbox games to your hard drive (and have them be playable) even if they contain HD-invalid filenames (like Enter the Matrix, for example). I don't know how feasible this is, and I know it doesn't seem that necessary right now, but if a lot of games start coming out that way, it would be awesome to not have to worry about it and have it work.

A great feature to add to your dashboard would be how you can configure settings without having to use .xml thats a pain like evo x you can change all your settings then save them that would be a great feature that way settings are much easier to change

I'd love to see the file sharing suggestion as mentioned above.
I have a 120gb drive in my box and I always fill it full of movies at my lan parties. The ability to share this with Xbox only companions would be brillient.
Top notch stuff so far guys.
The only thing I really want is the ability to develop skins for the dash board in much the same way winamp impliments them.

Please dont ever add IGR to Avalaunch, i know the idea is great and all, but lets be honest, the majority of us use the X2 BIOS and will be switching to the X3 BIOS once its out, i very much doubt IGR will be removed from the Xecuter range of BIOSes, so there really isnt a need for it, and besides, look at all the conflicts Evo-Xs IGR caused, please learn from their mistakes, you have an awesome dash that can only get better, dont ruin it by putting in IGR

EDIT: Oh and like bennytopcat said, it would be great if the settings were like in Evo-X and not xml, not that the xml is difficult to configure, but Evo-X took me 2 mins to set up, Avalaunch took me 5 mins just to read, then another 5 to setup. If you could change it to be an Evo-X ini style setup that would be much better all around i think, but thats just me

less precise analog stick for moving up and down the menus
currently you have to have the stick within about 5 degrees of directly up, otherwise you get no movement at all (illustrated by the blue area.

the red area would make it a little more forgiving for times when you're not completely sober and arent holding the pad quite straight.
Note: the diagram is symetrical, its your eyes making it look like its not

Would it be possible to make the FTP in file tree view? Or can it already do this and im just overlooking a setting? If not, do you think it would be possible for you guys to add this in?

I've got some serious ideas that ought to be worked on here, though I know you guys develop 'just' the dashboard, but the method of deployment of the dashboard definitely needs to be re-worked.
Here's what I mean:
The dashboard should have an 'auto install' feature. Avalaunch, on first run (from the DVD rom) should auto-detect itself on run, and if it does not find itself, to start an "Easy Configurator" session. This detection Im sure could be done by doing a simple MD5 on *.xbe on the C drive. On this install, You will be able to configure the following items:
-Auto-Detect Network (Attempt DHCP first, if no DHCP found, allow manual entry of IP settings)
-Auto Copy Avalaunch from DVD ROM to C
-Basic Configuration of Popular Programs (Please point to location of Xbox Media Player. Please Point Location of MS Dashboard for DVD playback).
-Finally, an auto update to itself.
-The menu should also be seperate from the standard XML config file, with a bit less fragmenting and a bit more explanation on configuration (Think ircd.conf-style). It just seems cleaner this way, since the menu isn't exactly the 'configuration' of the dash versus the other settings.
-Allow updates via CD. If the CD boots, finds an older version of the dash, then the new CD should ask if you would like to upgrade. All relevant configuration settings will be left the same, with onnly additions to the config (if required), or automatic importation of old settings into new configuration file.
-Finally, do something about requiring FTP for file transfers. Implement a Samba server into the dashboard.
That should be all for now

Btw, I'm well aware of the download/copy situation. Which is why I think we should make avalaunch ISOs on the FTP.

Just an idea but, for the progs/games that don't have icons showing up, could u have it look in the udata folder for TitleImage.xbx? I setup my own icons for a few games and most of the homebrews since I use neXgen as my default dash. I'd be that much closer to switching to avalaunch if I didn't have to redo my icons.
That and the screen configure option would make it even sweeter than it already is.

I dont know if your have gotten this to work, but a feature that i really would like to see is remote file extraction...
It would be really nice to sit it my couch, extracting movies that i'm going to see in xbmp...
It's a bit of a struggle to leave the couch and go all the way over to my compter to extract something and the go back into the couch.. maybe i'm lazy

hi all,
a little feature request :
as i have 4 versions of halo in the same dir (pal original.xbe, pal trained.xbe, ntsc original.xbe, ntsc trained.xbe, i can't see any of them
so i had added them manually in the game list, but they're not alphabetically sorted.
can you add a tag in the xml like evox's 'sortstart'/'sortend'
or, more likely, a tag to scan xbe files that are not default.xbe in a specific folder
example :
<special scan>
<scan other xbe>1</scan other xbe>
<path>
f:games
</path>
</special scan>

Well, something that would be nice, and could serve more then one function, would be to add drivers for the
Blue Gear bluetooth USB adapter or something similar that would enable the xbox as a bluetooth compatable device.
Here is the manufactuerers websight, it is a little more informative..
This websight is for those who might not know much about BluetoothJust think about it! Wireless keyboard, mouse, and networking all in the same device. Plus!!! This is the good part!! These little buggers are powered by the USB port, so I could easily see sacrificing one of my superflous controller ports, to install this as a "Blue Tooth Dongle" like the "DVD Dongle"! That would be a great mod!
Heck!! Forget about buying the Blue Gear model.. Just get one of the modchip teams to make a bluetooth dongle and sell it. I mean, we already have USB port mods, so making something that plugs right into the controller port couldn't be that difficult. I think making it at a decent price would be the hard part. Heck, they could even implement the drivers into the BIOS! Of course that would probably require a larger bios... hopefully under 1 meg.. hmm... Maybe I should post this in the modchip and xbox bios forums as well..

I'd just like to throw in another vote to patch games. Would be so cool to be able to patch default.xbe's from the box rather than ftp'ing back and forth. Not a real biggie for me, but for some friends who aren't at all computer savvy, it would be a huge feauture.

I have two suggestions, and I won't get my hopes up; really it is just a single suggestion in the form of (suggestion 1) XOR (suggestion 2). The first one is really far-off:
Suggestion 1. A whole new NTFS-like filing system for the HDD. This would forever fix problems of long file names. Patching games wouldn't be necessary (save for media checks on older BIOSes). It would also ease the confusion surrounding the FATX3 wrapper. This is an area of computer science I am not too strong in, so I don't know how feasible it is. But I have heard of NTFS implemented for Linux, so the code might already be available. Correct me if I'm wrong, please!
Suggestion 2. (I think this was already mentioned) A game ripper/copier that will auto-patch games (as Px HDLoader) with an integrated long file name fixer. It seems that the process of detecting bad file names, renaming them, and changing the strings corresponding to these file names in the .text (or wherever) section of the .xbe could all be automated. After all, one could just change the bytes of all occurences of the string "longfilenamexxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.ext " to "shortfilename.ext xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" without overwriting other data, since by nature of the problem the new string will fit inside of the old string. Another problem might lie in file name strings that are generated dynamically, such as a for loop that iterates over 100 files, all of which differ only in a single character. In this case, the string would not be hard-coded into the binary... but it's worth looking into.
I think the ability to back up any game with one, fool-proof method, without having to patch or manually fix, should be at the fore-front of a convenient dashboard. It might never be attained but it should be a feature that is forever sought after. Everything else, to me anyway, seems like fluff.
Okay, I'll step down now...
Thanks for all the great hard work! I would love to contribute to the implementation of the above suggestion if that is allowable.

You people just don't understand. There's absolutely no need for 'game patchers', and I would NEVER expect to see that in the Avalaunch dashboard and they better not waste their time on it.
Use the Xecuter 2 bios if you need that feature, it's already been done and handled. Don't give me "BUT I WANT MY EJECTFIX". What's more important?
Anyways, I still think my ideas are better..they're mostly cosmetic, but that's what we need. We need an 'easy to use' dashboard that goes beyond the standard PC mumbo jumbo.
Oh, and to answe the question of NTFS support, not happening. NTFS Write support is still very unstable in linux distributions, so that's not anything close to happening.

Actually, the Xecuter bios doesn't fix Enter the Matrix. You have to patch it.
Long file name patching and media flag patching are 2 totally differant things. X2 never claimed to be able to patch long file names. Heh and if you want to play shit games then thats upto you
If you want the patch long file names then do it manually, dont be such a lazy sod, i doubt that Avalaunch will add in a long file name patcher, its too much hassle and not worth making file patchers when for 1, X2 BIOS already deals with media flag patching and 2, you can already download patchers for whichever game has long file names anyway, so why would they waste time making something like that when they could work on bigger and better features.

I would like to see the two of these ideas implimented. I too have 2 versions of Halo and some other games for the trained versions. I have renamed the default.xbe and have another game_trained.xbe. It'd be nice if Avalaunch could detect these and/or allow me to setup a submenu under the list of games that will both be auto sorted alphabetically with the games in there (submenu called Halo comes after the game listing frogger and before Kung fu chaos) and allow me to specify an icon for the submenu. Maybe another good idea would be to allow us to specify a different icon for individual xbe's.

What's such a hassle? It wouldn't be that hard... And what "bigger and better" things? IRC clients? Here's an obvious fact: fewer people use their xbox as an means of connecting to IRC servers than to play games. So, I'll say it one more time, convenience and functionality in backing-up and playing games should be at the fore-front of any project of this kind.

Ok, from the long post, IMO these seem the best to me
* Mouse support
* DVD Ripper (But rip into Xvid, and allow keyboard to enter in a directory/filename)
* Also A Live Text Editor Would Be Nice Too, So You Could Edit Your .ini Files In Real Time.
* Calibrational screen (for people with older tv's that cut off the edge of the screen)

*How about an Xbox Scene news viewer?
*a hard disk defragging utility
*Since most HDD support S.M.A.R.T and you can read temperatures with it -- could it possible added to Avalaunch?
* The Mp3 feature, let it play random
*It would be great if you could add external USB hard drive support.
There my fav so far. I think it would be really sweet if there was a DVD Ripper included, that put them onto your Hard Drive in Xvid. I rather Xvid to DivX....... Have it goto F:Movies by default or something (thats my movie folder LOL).
And that compression of unused games is brilliant, i know i haev some games i rarely play, but dont have the heart to delete (DOA XB nude LOL, my tricked out Thps3 and a few otehrs).
Dunno why i like mouse support, but i do. I think its coz i got one hooked up, and i like for it to be of use

My Number 1 Dream InclusionUSB adapter support for devices like USB CDRWs. Maybe not to be able to burn (would be a cool way to back up your games though

) but more for the fact of reading normal CDRs in my Thompson Drive. I am not sure how you would go about it, but make it similar to reading ISOs and immitating D: Drive. Just read the contents of the CDR in hte Drive, and make it a virtual D: or something. I know that people with Thompson drives, and any USB CDs of any sort would Love this.
I know its a big ask, but it would be the coolest thing IMO. Especially if it had the ability to burn files too LOL.

Usability is key. You cannot tell me that having to modify the damn XML on every install, everytime something new gets put on the xbox, is not a hassle. Don't give me that "Auto Search" BS, because then you're limited to what you can name the Folders to on the menu.
It also seems fairly assenine to have multiple versions of a dashboard ISO created so newbies can have their "DHCP or Static" fix. I really do think that a simple configurator program ON BOOT (for new Avalaunch Installations) would be best for helping people get the dashboard installed and configured.
The other programs aren't really of importance, we've lived without defragmenting the xbox for how long now? Not like it really matters in the end to many of us.
Media flag patching is also not a very important feature, leave that up to Xecuter in the bios since they already have at least a somewhat 'working' version of it that they can modify if need-be. So that cuts that feature out.
Audio File Playback can be done from the Xbox media player, maybe a very *simple* audio playback should be implemented, but not everybody uses mp3s for their music and you're going to find a lot of people saying "well put this support and put this support" until you find that it is ALL you work on for a few releases. Again, this is already taken care of by other programs.
Seeing as how the Avalaunch team actually reads these forums and the like, I believe the dashboard has huge potential if you concentrate on the right features. Sometimes you need to just stop on all the wooing technical shit (OH LOOK, YOU CAN DEFRAG THE XBOX HD), and go back and just re-work some of the usability.

Of course I've entered the settings menu, but you obviously can't just do that from a CD, can you? Why not have an auto configuration and auto installer on boot from the CD drive that stores settings on the HD instead of reading from a damn xml file on the CD. This solves the problem of first having to modify the xml, burn the CD, boot the CD, ftp to the xbox, copy the CD contents to C, etc.

first, great dashboard guys, beautiful, a few notes on what to add:
1: I noticed in the information, it tells you about slave and master devices, in conjunction with a no-dvd patched bios, support for a second drive in the xbox ie: a 60gb laptop drive hidden in away in there replacing the dvd drive.
2: ftp server doesnt work well with xiso, always have to boot up evox or xbmp

two quick ideas:
1) evox skin compatability when you get done with the ui, and
2) the ability to put a ppf patch in a directory (say, /f/games/game1/default.xbe.ppf) and avalaunch will make a copy of default.xbe, patch it with the ppf patch, and load the patched xbe. that would be good so you dont mess up the original, for noobs so they wouldnt have to patch anything, just ftp over the file and name it to the file that should be patched, and cuz its just 1 more feature for ava

-HTTP Server
For configuration and information on the xbox, this would be neat
-IRC Addon
how about being able to share the games off the HDD ? i.e making DCC for ava users possible to send a complete directory, one file per file.
So we could see how big it is in total, file count, kb/s ?
That would be cool for sharing apps between xbox users. and using your own CTCP's for special info it would not display when not in some sort of debug mode.
-News Client
would be cool to add some RSS news feeds, and it scrolling them on top.
Being able to add some manually would be cool

-Multitasking
Running Several apps ?! that would rock, thats the next big step xbox dashboards could/would do

Thats my grain to the soup, hope some of em will be implemented

How about a real-time config through a web browser, kind of like a router setup? You type the IP of your XBox up in IE and a little configuration page comes up. From there, you can change your FTP and IRC settings, shutdown/reboot the XBox, check ftp statistics, etc. It would be great for people who use the XBox as a file server. Skin designers wouldn't have to go back and forth between mouse and controller. I'm sure other people could find some use out of it as well.

I've got an idea regarding DHCP and Static IP config in Ava. My XBox is normally connected to my PC all the time, getting its IP via DHCP. If my PC is not switched on, Ava states that no link is found and a network error occurs, which is expected .The rest of the time i disconnect it from my PC and link up with other Xboxes for direct transfer etc. But to do this i need to change the IP to Static and then back to DHCP for when its connected to the PC.
What i would like is if no IP is assigned via DHCP, Ava would assign a preset Static IP. This would save changing it each time. If i'm way off the mark then flame away.

u r the biggest moron i have seen...WTF would be the point of IRC on the xbox...USE UR BRAIN U IDIOT...ITS POINTLESS...its redundant...OMG ur gonna wanna pirate games on the xbox...WHATS THE POINT..U CANNOT EXTRACT THEM WITHOUT WINRAR....jeez.... u guys dont think abstractly..u dont think ahead of time... after u download the game what r u gonna extract it with huh.. thats why i was asking for a WinRaR type program...i know IRC is already built into Avalaunch but its not that big of a deal tho... i like it but i dont really use it cuz IRC is mainly 4 downloading binaries but u cant do anything with these binaries unless u have WinRaR... jeez u n00bs just PISS me off sometimes when u dont know what u will encounter in the future!
Umm no offense, but read this:
>> Avalaunch
Features:
* IRC client
* FTP server/client
* autoupdate with history
* skeleton
* graphical launcher
* FATX2 wrapper
* unrar / unzip
* settings menu
Current Status:: v0.46.1 // no download (build with XDK) // Official Website
Umm yeah, while i havent tried to unrar anything yet, it is meant to have RAR capabilities, and Zip capabilities, built into its file manager. You went and called him the biggest moron, for not thinking ahead, but the feature you talked of waiting for exists.....
Now cant you guys call a truce? He already did, so its all pending on you, and the fact of the matter is, this idea is a good one, and all the facts you had against it have been wrong. it is possible to do so, with the IP address, and it is possible to unRAR it.
Although one thing he mentioned that was wrong....

But this would make it easier to get games for some people, and as the Xbox runs quiet and doesn't get too hot, nobody would care if its on overnight to send a game really.
Umm i dunno about that. I think they run very hot. My CPU can be idle, and its well over 40c, and when i finish a game, and go back to dash, it can be at 50/55c..... which is very hot. MY computer CPu never hits over 45c, and thats OC'ed to 2.88Ghz (from 2.4Ghz). Although the xbox is very much stable, and i have left it on for long periods of time, but if i where to get into the, i would have a go at changing my fans.... my setup is still the generic one, maybe throw in a HDD cooler, and a Sunon 80mm 50cfm fan for outtake. But then it wont be wuite... but sound dont matter to me, i will have MP3s playing to hide it
edit
Ok, i just tried to unRAR a file, and it didnt work. SO the features list is wrong, or it was removed, since its for the previous version. But either way, if the where to incorporate downloasd, they would add rar support aswell. And this may have been accidentally put there, as an upcoming feature?

I still want a dancing weasel, a pony, a puppy dog, a hoola hoop, a new bike, and a can of idiot be gone.
Anyway... Transfering games would be blatant piracy, so adding that feature SOLELY for the purpose of trading games would be asking to get smacked with a lawsuit.. Of course you don't have to add it solely for the purpose of transfering games.
It has always been my impression that the scene frowns on piracy in general, or at least beyond what can be reasonably expected (technically all the dashes made use pirated software).
Just my 2 cents.
BTW, when someone is WRONG and you can PROVE IT with FACTUAL DATA, then do so. But if you just think someone is wrong, it's best just to keep your mouth shut. This little snipet of advice will make you appear a lot more intelligent then you actually are, with the added bonus of people liking you more because you "listen" to them, even if you don't believe a word they say.
Just my additional 2 cents.

Ok guys thanks for the great work so far, here's my request.
Im sure you're familiar with IRC protocol, anyhow I think we need a little addition.
To turn the xbox into a really dedicated server, a lot of people need irc / ftp combo.
So, for the IRC part, need :
# irc respond to a trigger, eg. !list ...that u can set, with text string / channel settings to display it to etc. Possibly also have constants available to the string, such as IP, PORT etc available to insert into message, if it can get external IP somehow this a big bonus, ie. state your ftp details as a reply to a trigger in some irc channel =P
# a timed message option, so set a timer and a message and channel to spam, and it spams as set
# dcc transfers as previously stated by a few
This wouldnt be mind boggling hopefully and I think a lot of people would appreciate it, plus just a step ahead to the total dedicated xbox server solution.
Couple other basic ideas I thought skinning would be great for avalaunch, selectable backgrounds etc, and let the triggers fast scroll thru the menu's too, and if not already some sort of config in the file manager to setup remote browsing for ftp.
Cheers and hope you like the ideas.
I really appreciate your work. Thanx

ISO mounting over network. Create a Virtual Drive based on an ISO image (like CloneCD's Virtual CloneDrive) that's sitting on a network drive.
