0110 here too. Anyone know how to fix it? I took the HDD off but it didn't help. What else could be messed up?

memory refers to the ram chips soldered to the motherboard... your HDD is "storage" not memory
dj007
Oh no. So what could've caused it, and is there any easy way to fix it? (Though I doubt it).

Please offer some help.

I got the red light in section 4

Error code E74

Tried friend's AV cables, makes no difference. 360 will not turn past error page. This FAQ said E74 was AV cable problem, can't be that, what is it?

Phoned MS, they said they have no idea what the code is so will send lables then a courier. Is there a quicker fix?

try putting some passive heatsinks on them...they look like this
IPB Image
Youll only need 2 of them since the other 2 are covered by the gpu block.
Heres the link

There are others, just search around.

Not really sure if that would help, but it wouldnt hurt to try.

MS doesn't ask any questions about the current state of your 360 when you purchase an extended warranty. While this may be unethical it's still a legal loophole in the system. If your system breaks just buy a warranty and have MS fix it for free.

Hey guys.

Finally got a 0102 too,. my xbox started freezing randomly 1 day ago, suddenly then the three red lights.
I have had no metal foil under my cooling units, but anyhow I put some Arctic Silver on it.

I read a post about moisture that had build up on the mainboard, so I disassembled my box again and suddenly noticed these odd marks on the mainboard. First I thought they were caused by heat and burned in, but then I tried to wipe them away and with a little force I had success.

It'll take a while till I'm totally done, but hopefully this helps me with my 3-RedLights...

Maybe these pics can help to find out what the reason for a 0102 is. I think the 0102 can have different reasons as it may be some sort of general failure, which would it make really hard to fix these errors... :/

I'll post as soon as I completley wiped the mainboard and tested the box again...

LilaQ
twistedsymphony
That looks like residue from corrosion blink.gif

do you live near the ocean or something?

Corrosion could definitely cause things to stop working properly. It doesn't generally effect simple circuits until it gets really bad but even light corrosion can quickly kill something as complex as the 360 really quick.

I used to work at an arcade on the beach and we'd have machines go down all the time due to corrosion from all the moisture in the air. older machines we could easily fix ourselves by using contact free cleaner and a tooth brush and re-seating/re-flowing all the chips but newer more complex machine's we'd often have to send the boards out for repair/replacing
LilaQ
Hey twistedsymphony,

no I don't live near the ocean, actually I live in central Germany. Maybe the really tropical weather we have had the last weeks caused this corrosion!?

I wiped everything off now, really carefully with an old soft t-shirt. Additionally i put 2 passive cooling units on the RAM's that are still visibile when the main cooling units are on the mainboard.

And it looks like I had total success. The xbox ran for about ~7 hours now, without any breaks, and I hadn't had a single freeze or anything else.

I hope it's all fixed with that now, and hopefully I can help people with this, who have the same errorcode. Even though it's not 100% clear if that corrosion or the new cooling units on the RAMs make the difference, but I guess both doesn't harm your box.

I got a 0102 tonight, I have a feeling is due to overheating. I bought mine at CircuitCity 16 days ago, I'm glad it is under their 30 day warrenty. I think this is a sign for me to wait until they come with with a cooler running version of the 360....
neoed30
I have had error code 0110 everytime my 360 flashes the 3 red lights at me. The other day I was messing around with the RF Modulator and turning the 360 off and on and repeatedly pressing the White synchronize button for the wireless controller and the 360 gave me an error code 0102 for the next couple of restarts. Then it booted to the 360 logo and froze. I restarted it and it went back to the 0110 code again. Did I confuse it by hitting those buttons continuously? Also, the last weekend of June I was messing around with 360 and it gave me 0110 error code flashing 3 red and then it booted up. I messed around in the dash for about a minute then it froze again. I restarted it and I actually got an on screen error code E 79 for the first time. I haven't seen that one yet. Anyone else? I haven't had it come up again since. Just flashing red lights. I think I killed it finally. sad.gif Oh, well time for a brand new one. biggrin.gif

Hey, just joined the forum. Thanks for all the helpful deciphering of the error codes.

Now, I just started getting a 0110 error, the memory error/overheating thingy. I've had my 360 ever since launch in mid december or whenver it was and this was the first time I've ever had this problem. I got home from work and tried to watch a movie and it froze on the title screen. I sent an email to MS support and I'm waiting until six to call them so I can maybe get the info I need to send it in for repairs because I can't seem to do anything about it here. This is pissin me off!

By the way, does anyone know exactly what the 0110 means? What is the memory error/overheating? I might have forgotten to turn my xbox off when I left the house, but my dad gets home not long after that and he turned it off. I don't see how anything could have overheated so easily when I've spent some days with it on for hours upon hours playing Oblivion or Halo. Then again, I keep hearing the first gen 360s have overheating issues. Again, if anyone can explain what this error ACTUALLY means, I would be grateful.

Hi again,

have just repaired another x360 (Error 0102) with Hot Air Gun!!
This box was really dead, no sound and screen only 3 red blinking leds. So I used the same method as I wrote in my last post.

x360 boots now just fine, no problems at the moment. also played 5 hours without stops!! hehe

Would be very interesting if somebody could repeat that and port his results. wink.gif

i followed your advice and used a heat gun on my bga ram chips and southbridge as well. the first run i used a fairly low temp and a quick try proved correct. it powered on and made it to the dashboard. roughly 3-5 minutes later, it froze. that simply backs up the theory about the ram chips being poorly attached and/or poor quality chips.

IMHO, from the behavior the system exhibits, many 0102 failures are due to bad RAM or RAM that was damaged by exposure to heat. Try to think about this more from a planar point of view and less of a console. when a motherboard fails to POST, we tend to trouble shoot Physical Damage->BIOS->RAM->CPU (in no particular order). once you've ruled out physical damage and since in this case there is no adjustments to be made to the bios, RAM/CPU are the next logical areas to troubleshoot. by simply looking at the design of the heatsink for the GPU, it should be fairly obvious that there is indeed a heat problem where the chips located under the heatsink are exposed to higher temps w/o any benefit of the heat sink just milimeters above it. personally, i'm going to send mine back to MS and get a refurb. i'm curious to see if anyone has chopped off their GPU heatsink to expose the ram chips below, and added a fan to it. Even adding some sort of heatsinks for the remaining RAM chips exposed on the top of the planar like the ones referred to in the above post. Anyone wanna give that a shot and post the results?
jfishel
one further thought i had regarding my post above. if there is in fact an issue with the heat sink for the GPU causing a fault in the system ram, then this error could be more prevalent on systems that are running in HD. the extra load rendering may contribute to the temp inside the case. has anyone tried to track the # of failed systems running in HD as opposed to SD? i know i was running in HD up until it failed the first time.

My Error Code was 0110. I cut my heatsink a while back and placed heatsinks on all of the memory chips on the top side of the board and added a fan. It worked for a couple of weeks. I think I waited to long to do this though. My 360 has now finally bit the dirt for good. sad.gif R.I.P
I am currently parting it out. These items are now on Ebay. Hitachi DVD Drive, RF Board (ROL) ,Power Supply.

jfishel
your post is exactly what i was thinking (and i suspect the next board revision will prove it). the only problem with it is the 20% loss of cooling efficiency by hacking off the heat sink. its obviously too late for anyone who has the current planar revision. one last thought for anyone who has gotten a refurb system, have you checked to see if they changed anything on the boards? (ie, ram chips, heat sinks, etc...)

Very interesting video, it's awesome ! smile.gif
I also have an error 0102 with my 360, I bought it 14 days ago, I got this error for the 1st time after rebooting, I was playing DoA 4 on the Live -> sometimes, after deconnecting AV & power cables for the night, when I reconnect the console, it starts with freezes at the interface sequence boot, then in rebooting it lets a totally black screen with error 0102 -> 3 LED giving 4, 1, 4, 2 signal in pressing the white button + eject button 4 times. Sometimes the console reworks normally after putting it in "stand" position & it can run 4 or even more hours without probs.
I know the error 0102 's not well known, but are there more info about this error ?
SoulFlow
Just wanted to drop by and say thank you for the video post. I have/had an xbox with the 0102 error code and the heat gun trick really works. I just performed this method about 2 hours ago and have had success. 20 reboots and all is well. So, give this a try if your are out of warranty and have nothing to lose! Good luck..
illidur
lots of info since i have been here last, and i myself have found the problem with mine. after giving my box to my friend to open, he said he found a huge black streak across my graphics chip. so maybe 0102 could be ram/gpu because that seems to be the problem. now i am just wondering if its possible to replace a graphics chip somehow ? i highly doubt my problem was from overheating, instead i think it was a surge or somthing of the like.

oh, and whats a hot air gun supposed to do to the motherboard ? thanks!
SoulFlow
From what I understand, it is supposed to re-seat some cold solder joints that cannot be seen by the naked eye. I was jamming on mine for over 5 hours today, rebooting once in a while just to test, without a problem.

I'm getting the 3 red lights, and the error code is 0102, and I have no idea what's wrong. It gave me this error before, and would not turn on, but somehow fixed itself (only thing i did was plug in my mp3 player to it, but thats most likely unrelated.)

Now its doing it again and its not turning on at all. I guess i got lucky last time. It hasn't even been used for about 4 hours, and it wasn't any rigorous playing, so its not overheating. I just decided to turn it on and it did this. It also froze up earlier during Perfect Dark, might be related.

It says on this thread that 0102 is an unknown error... anyone know?

I had a same problem, I take my 360 to pieces, but no result. But one thing helped me. I have opened my 360 and removed a plastic heat-conducting path, then I turn on 360 and wait 2-3 minutes until the graphic card has strongly heated up and turn off 360. When I has again turn on 360 all worked perfectly. I think that 0102 error is a problem somehow сonnected with a videocard and overheating is the thing that helps to solve a problem. I hope this method will help all with a problem 0102 And as soon as there will be PS3 I shall buy it and forget about all problems.
jasrCSU
Hey everyone,

As I posted earlier I was getting the unknown 0021 and just randomly diecided to turn it on the other day. Well it cut on, no sound but the xbox logo finally came on. It was really sluggish and after it finished it gave me the service screen. So now I have an error E64. I then put the harddrive back in and its stuck back on the 0021.

Any info on these yet?

Thanks,
James
pasqually@rock.com

I had recently took my 360 apart to find out what drive I had. Upon putting it back together I received error code 0011 (2 lights lit 1 and 3), over heating problem. As it turns out the tutorial I used to take it apart show to remove all the screws (including the heatsink screws) took it back apart and made sure the heatsink scrwes were really tight and now it works fine. I hope this helps out a few of you.

PS I want to thank everyone of you, who contribute in anyway, wether coding, reversing, or posting, and especially to XBOX-SCENE. be cool and happy hacking, Pasqually.

If you shorted out the 5V on the 360 for some reason, and now your 360 has the error 0001 or 0002 (psu error), and using a different brick does not fix it, i have a *now confirmed working* fix:

IPB Image

The two MOSFETs circled in blue must be replaced.

The part number is NTD60N02RG:

http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/product.do?id=NTD60N02R

I posted the fix a while ago, but it was untested, but Smartmod has repaired his motherboard by replacing the FETs, so the repair is now confirmed working.

Any way to fix the "open tray" problem?

When a original xbox360 game or xbox game is in the console the drive will not start spinning is it did earlier.

It seems the spinning is way to slow to recognize a game disk (dvd-video does work = slower read speed).

And after a while the xb360 says: "Open tray" as if there wasn't a disk inside.

/edit it's a sammy drive and mfr is 30-5-2006

I got an xbox offa ebay the other day that had the 3 ROL error code 0020 which, from reading on this site, points to the GPU. I just want to confirm that the "heat gun" fix works. I went out to Pep Boys and got a heat gun for like $20 bucks... it came with an attatchment nozzle to reduce the tip size, so I used that. I dissassembled the xbox down to the main board and removed the heat sink for the gpu (I left the cpu heat sink on because I didn't want to chance burning two chips). I covered anything other than the GPU in foil for heat shiielding (in retrospect, it really didn't matter everything got hot anyway). I turned on the heat gun to its lowest stting, which the package claimed to be 420 degrees F. Solder melts at about 360 degrees so you wanna get a gun that's as close to that as possible, any more could damage the chip. I pointed the gun at the chip and circled the outside, in attempt to heat the solder and not the silicon for about a minute... minute and a half. Let it cool down (be careful not to move the chip when it's hot). Let the chip cool for like 15-20 min and it works like a charm.

I was like most people that believed the media hype that 360's were burning holes through chips. Then I thought to myself... wouldn't we have seen MS pass the buck on to the chip manufacturers if that was so? Instead maybe one of the plants rushed the board through the reflow oven and they didn't solder right. I would bet that the prob. on most of these returns.

here is another confirmed report of the heat gun trick working.

had error code 0102. the xbox would not boot up until about the 50 try. after i did the heat gun to the gpu, ram, and southbridge, the 360 turned on first try.

i set up a GRAW server to run all night and when i awoke in the morning, the 360 was stilling running strong. havent had it freeze to this day.
Farbrorn
Seems most of those of us that have gotten the 0102-error: "General hardware failure" can fix it quite quickly and easily with that hot air rework. That procedure saved my 360. Mine started behaving with sudden lockups, and overheating. Seemed strange to me that the console started overheating after a couple of months, I started with replacing the thermal paste, and I thought I was in the clear until it needed additional cooling directly on the GPU to keep it from overheating after 2 minutes of gaming. After a couple of days it stopped booting up, and gave me the 0102 code. Then I tried the hot air, and damn, it worked like a charm right away. No overheating, no lockups - just behaves as it should. I feel sorry for those you cannot fix these things themselvs, because i'm sure "ordinary" people will have this problem more and more because so many that I have read about have this exact problem. And I think that a 360 that have been on for like 10-15 hours of nonstop play gets pretty heated. And if you move it around right away, without allowing it to cool properly it could create problems with the soldering. Also, I guess when all these 360s get a year or two old, with constantly getting very warm and cooling down - there will be problems that can only be fixed with this hot air procedure. And as everyone knows, the GPU gets VERY hot. Not strange that it need overhaul when it's getting so unevenly heated.

Best thing would be for MS to give a rebate for everyone encountering this 0102-problem for having it fixed by professionals.

Well, maybe you heat them not hot enough. so, try it again, you have nothing to lose!
MrCrazy1
Well I melted some of the aluminum foil so I think I did it hot enough. But if you think it will fix it I guess i'll do it again.

Mate, this is amazing! Thanks for the video post.

I got a XO with 0102 and no display. I don't have a hot air gun so I try to use the hair dryer at home ( which got 1500w power). And it's fixed. You guys are hero!

Just follow up my earlier post, my machine works but often freeze and got crap graphics on screen sometimes. Do I still need to find a proper hot air gun to give it a thorough blow?

First post, just want to say thanks to everyone involved with comming up with the fix for 0102 error. I did the heat gun fix + new artic silver 5 been running my 360 for 3+ hrs with 0 freezes, before the fix, I was lucky if I got past the dashboard! biggrin.gif

Why nobody post info about error 64? smile.gif I was read about few problems, and my friend have also this problem.. This is something with dvd drive. I don't know exactly what now , but after change drive, all is ok.

i'll try post news about it, but now I think it is similar to E65. It is after bad fw change.
bigjimmy
So im guessing the error codes were due to a loose connection in one of the chips? So the hot air remelts and properly connects the solder?

Good job Modfreakz
Team Modfreakz
get error E64 after the PC freeze during flashing the drive (faultily/corrupted fw)
also get this error if the fw chip of the DVD drive are not present or empty.

so thats all at the moment.

MrCrazy1
Well I just did it for the 3rd time and I really focused a lot on all the chips and it still doesn't work...
bigjimmy
Well im getting E65 when my DVD drive is connected and the fourth quadrant flashing red. The DVD drive It was working before but all of a sudden its not. It doesnt even make that noise when you first turn on the 360 (you know like on a pc when the computer is POSTing). Bloody hell.
thasaint39
This my first post here guys but believe me. If you have error code 0110 use the the
air gun method I used a 1875 watt hair blow dryer and the dam thing WORKED!!! I have
had it on for about a hour now the longest before this was 3 minutes.
crosensteel88
Thank you all very much for the info on the 0102 error.

I fixed mine without opening it at all. Just take a blanket and lay it on top of the Xbox making sure that the cooling vents are covered, and turn it on for a few hours. After that, turn it off again and let it cool down for about an hour. Reboot it a few times if it doesn't work right away.

If it still doesn't work after that, I would try opening it up like everyone else suggests.

Thanks again for the help with the fix.
