You are not the only one. I currently have four machines with code 0102 and have used the hot air gun technique on all, with no positive results. Still looking for other options.
As for the 0021 code, fixed our machines using artic silver and adding cooling mod. So far, none have been returned!

You'd be better off using the heat gun. I doubt you'll get anywhere with a hair dryer.

a hair dryer wouldn't get nearly hot enough...
a hair dryier on it's HIGHEST setting is about 90F
a heat gun on it's LOWEST setting is about 150F on it's highest it's 800F or 1200F depending on the gun

0021 is %100 not the fallowing things
AV Cables
PSU
DVD DRIVE
RF Board
Overheating
i have a 0021 sitting here that I'm currently working on, from reading this FAQ i figured it would be a easy fix, just flash the drive and it works, well after i unplugged the dvd drive and still getting the error i realized it had nothing to do with the DVD ROM drive
i did notice that the mobos previous owner had messed up a heatsink upgrade (applying as5) and it look like the CPU might have been fried (found one of the clips behind it wasn't even on and the as5 had been bubbling), i can say now that this problem defantly has something to do with the mobo and with 0020 being a GPU problem its most likely that this is aether GPU or CPU, i will post updates if i get anywhere with this

well i heated up the frount and back of the board (in the places that are most populated) and got it to give 0020 now, but i highly doubt that 0021 is dvd timeout since the dvd drive that came with it works fine on a different console (with the same fw)
edit: now its back to 0021

Ok. Here is the deal. I have cut a hole in the top of my xbox 360 under the hdd to access the dvd rom sata easier without having to open the case everytime I want to back up a game. Now, I have recently recieved the 3 light problem also. I have figured out my error code is 0020. The problem is unkown for that code with a possibility of overheating. I unplugged my xbox and set it in front of a box fan for about 30 minuets. Then i plugged it back in and WALLAH!. Still red lights. Humm. What could it possible be I wondered. So I put my fingers through the hole that I had cut and unplugged the sata cable from the dvd rom and plugged it back in. When I tried to turn it back on, the same thing happened. Then, I put my fingers back in the hole and unplugged the sata cable from the dvd rom again, but this time I left it unplugged. Then I turned the console back on and BAM. It started right up. No red lights. But, of course I could not read any disks because I had it unplugged. So I turned the xbox off and plugged the sata cable back in the dvd rom and it is working perfect. So, I'm thinking it could have been something to do with the cable mabey. I dunno. But if I get the error again I will post again to tell if the same solution worked. I do not recomment opening your case to try this if you have not opened it already because it will void your warrenty. And I don't think the console has been out for a year yet and I believe there is a year warrenty from MS. But I could be wrong on that. Have a good day, and happy hacking. (Or modding) And I don't think that error 0020 is for overheating because it would have been heating up while I was trying all the dvd rom cable removal stuff. Let me know how it goes.

I've just screwed up one of my 360s. I have two 360s but only one HDD. I booted up my TS 360 and realised my hdd was on the other, so like an idiot I plugged in the hdd while the 360 was still on. The HDD is in bits so I think it was part way in, I then pushed the connector in fully. Straight away I got 3 red lights with error code 0020. The 360 had only been on a few min, so I don't think error code 0020 is an overheating error. I've tried the various solutions described at the begining of the thread (unplug etc..), but still get the 3 rings of death. The HDD still works ok in my other 360. I've void my warrenty by flashing the DVD FW, so I'm screwed. So maybe error code 0020 is SATA related.

Hey man! Wanted to say thanks for this great idea. I had one die on me just out of waranty and ended up buying another. So after reading your story, I figured I had nothing to lose, so I gave it a try on my dead box with the 0102 error code. I first cracked it open and used a hair dryer, cause it was extremely late, and that was all I had available. Well, it worked, but not for long. (figured I'd give a try since somewhere earlier in this thread someone had luck with the hair dryer, just not me) So the next day I called around and asked a few people if they had a hot air gun I could borrow, but had no luck. So I dropped 25 bucks on one at Home Depot, and gave it a shot. It worked great! I have even hooked it up to another TV in my house, and now have 360 gaming in two rooms now!!!!
Thanks again! YOU THE MAN!

Get the hot air gun, see my post above. To take off that silver heat sink, flip over your board and you'll see two x shaped brackets (i guess thats what you would call it, and only remove the one under the silver heat sink) Anyway, at the end of the four arms of the X you will see what looks like little metal studs in the center of the cutout. I just got a litte flat head screw driver, and pryed out the four studs. Stick your screw driver down into those cutouts, on the side furthest from the center of the X, and just pry the bracket away from the stud. After you get three of these off, the last will just come off by hand. To put it back on, just kinda do this in reverse. Pry them all back on, again, the first one you should be able to get started by hand. Take note, when the heat sink is off, you can see the little indentation running around the top half of the stud, thats where that bracket holds on to the stud, so make sure when you are done, that the bracket is holding on all four of them.

Hey what's up guys?
I've been having a problem with my 360 lately.
I took it apart one day, looked around and put it back together. Soon after I started getting graphics errors in progressively shorter intervals (ex: half hour, then 20 min, then 10, then 5, now it doesnt even get past the dash).
So I took the mobo out and tried the heat gun fix.
It actually made it worse; i get two red led's (overheating) and i did the error code and got 0011.
I tried the heat gun AGAIN. Same thing happened. I have no idea why it says it's overheating even though its room temp, which is 78 degrees.
Any help is appreciated!
I already tried taking off the protective foil(did it) and put the heatsinks back on.
I'm clueless...any ideas?

Hello...I've got a unusual error or flashing light problem that I didnt see a error code for. Wondering if it happened to anybody else. Was playing Chromehounds on Live with a friend who lives literally next door to me. All of a sudden 3 flashing red red lights on console. Now the stranger thing is that is happened to him as well. Now he's been having freezing and lock-up issues with his 360 but I've had mine since the Nov 22nd US launch and its worked perfectly fine. The weather was slightly dismal but I dont remember any lightning or anything like that. He mentioned that his 360 and the tv/receiver its hooked to lost power but I only remember the flashing lights on my 360. However my 360 turned right back on and I played GRAW for 4hrs with no problems. I've got a replacement warranty but am not sure what to do. Anybody heard of anything like this happening? I can understand my 360 alone getting the flashing lights but for it to happen to 2 consoles in different homes at the same time is weird.

I would not go with a soldering gun, get yourself a heat gun capable of going over 800 degrees. Then follow the video, link is posted several places in this blog. When you put your 360 back together, make sure you use fresh artic silver ( or any other good thermal paste), and make sure you tighten the 8 little screws that fasten the heat sinks to the base tight! If you do not tighten them, you will not get a good seat between the chips and the heatsinks. Also, I have been using thermal paste to tie the two chips that are already covered by the silver heatsink, into that heatsink. That has been working good for me and is simpler then cutting the silver one down and putting additional heat sinks in. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I started getting freezing and then eventually started getting the "3 red lights" every time the system was turned on. Tried the heat gun (I used an industrial one from MCM electronics) trick and it is working perfectly.
I heated the board to a point where the board was almost to hot to touch and kept the focus on the memory, GPU and the processor, but never on any one component for too long. I let it cool for about an hour before going back to it and it worked. Nice call.
Next is modding the box with blue LEDs in the 360 and the controller.
Thanks, I am now back in business.

Aug 24 2006, 01:11 PM
FYI...this is listed in the 360 error codes which can be found
HERE0021 DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash
This is the one we are getting and are using the heat gun treatment to fix:
0102 unknown error - literally means the console does not know what is wrong. possibly a short or cold solder joint somewhere. So far there is 1 major theory for what causes most of these errors is that the Ram, CPU, or GPU are not soldered properly to the mother board This can be solved by re-Heating the chips DO NOT attempt this if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.
hackthatxbox
Aug 24 2006, 11:29 PM
Heat gun works well on the 0102 error
We have brought about 8 back to life using this method
it is caused by moisture on the board, after playing the console for a while it dries the moisture out and leaves a white residue on the back of the board, if you are unlucky, it will dry a solder out as well.
try the heat gun if you are out of warranty.

well I have the 0021 error. I tried taking out the drive, flashed it with my firmware, it ran fine in my box so I know it's not the drive. Also flashed my drive with his info and no luck, so it has to be the board somewhere. Tried switching the power/sata cable and no difference.

I brought three 360's back to life with the heat gun. A few steps to help others...
You cant use a hair dryer, it does not get hot enough and for most you are wasting your time. After heating, the chips should be hot to touch and you should start to smell the faint odor of lightly cooked electronics. Thats about time to stop.
Use circular motion, or back and forth motion like spray painting...DONT let the heat be on one spot for to long.
Do the 4 ram chips on the bottom of the board first, and DONT MOVE the board until it has COOLED...because if that solder is still hot, gravity can make the small components move from their spot.
I didnt cover my caps and plastic parts on top of the board, but is a good idea that you do.
I think M$ should fix error 0102 for free(all errors for that matter), because it is not our fault that they did a rush job and cant keep their minds off sony and how many units they can get out before the ps3 debuts.
I like to say thanks and give props to all in the scene.

Error 74 is not a bad A/V cable. As it is stated in the FAQ's. I tried to buy replacement cables and I'm still getting the error. What a waste of time. The people at xbox told me it was a memory problem. You guys need to get your facts straight.

Most of the information compiled on these errors is a result of input and feedback from board members. Feedback would have been better than you bitching about it!
Admittedly, it doesn't seem quite right reporting an AV error using an on screen error number, but then maybe you should have thought about that - dumbass

Well then take info from this user and 0021 is not just a firmware issue as stated in the pin. I'm not sure what it is, but the drive in the error box is fine, reflashed and works in my box and my drive reflashed frags the 0021 box still, so it's not drive related. It's not cables as I've switched all them, inside and out. The thing just flashed red and i get 0021. So if anyone has any help other than 'reflash the drive back using opa', (it's not even a hitachi first, and was never flashed second, so I can't see how that would help) it would apprecaited.

Quick thanks to Modfreakz for the video. Fixed a 0110 error today after 4 tries. I started with the temp at 450 degrees (F), followed the video exactly. Got green lights once, booted, then back to ROD and 0110. I gradually increased the temperature until I was running the heat gun (Wagner, from Lowes) at around 850 degrees. After the trick at that level, the fix took, and the 360 has been running solid for about 6 hours now. Several reboots, good as new.
For those of you that try a very 'ginger' heat setting and don't meet with success, turn it up a bit and see if that helps you. Just remember to keep the heat gun moving and let the board cool 20+ minutes before you move it. Good luck!
Thanks again!
