I'm getting a 0101 error with no video output. Has anyone seen this/figured out a fix for it yet? I'm going to take it apart tomorrow to see if I can figure it out, but any help would be much appreciated.

Well...let's just say I'd rather be playing a game on my new Xbox 360 that I bought about 2 days ago. Hmmmm...where do I start....

9+ hours with various tech support to get on Xbox Live...finally gave up and just bought a top of the line new router...worked stratight away!

Ummmmm...screen freezing after a few minutes of gaming...every game Live or not...fun fun!

AND - to top it all off....I now have an E71 code! Yaaaaaaaa. I call support and they tell me to send it in! Ya right! I bought it 2 days ago...its going straight back to circuit city.

Anybody know what the deal is with this crap? Reading through a few threads it seems like everybody here is having one problem or another. Is this Microsoft's marketing plan or something?? WTF??!!

Help please smile.gif
Beauner
In addition to the E79 code that I am now getting...not getting the E71 any longer uhh.gif

The "secret" error code is 1433...does this mean anything to anybody??

TIA! biggrin.gif

Same problem for me! I think its not the hdd i make different test with hdd and without, with game disc, with controller off, with charge kit, i have always E 79 error. Maybe the gpu? I need help!
bloodog
hi my names bloodog and as many of you i have the same problem the dred 3 lights . also i suck at spelling so pleas forgive my spelling . any who, i saw the video on how to repair the problem and my question is, Can i use a conventional hair dryer for the prosses?
focusruckus
I tried using a blow dryer and it didn't work and I even tried to "wrap" my xbox to let the heat build up and that still didn't work finally I tried the Hot Air Gun and it fixed my problem. I don't think a conventional hair dryer will work I think the point of the whole process to "reseat" the sodder.....
Thirsty Fire
ok guys I'm gonna try the heat gun method the problem is i could not find one in here anyway can I use 2 or 3 hair dryers insted?
Psilocybe
i just got a 0020 after fucking up a trace trying to pry the gpu clamp off

only had hdd errors before this
Jerk29
Ok this is my first time posting here, but I've been reading this stuff since July. I too, have the 0102 error, and really think MS should pay me to get it fixed!
Anyway, since July I've had the error and have seen ModFreakz' video. I liked the logic there but have not been sure about opening my system. My solution has been to wrap the thing in a towel and let it get hot, by itself. This has worked off and on. The first time it worked for about a week. I was really impressed. But now it's hit or miss. I have even kept airflow restricted while using it, without error for about 20 hours, and then no boot the next day.
I did get a repair ticket in July, but I was out of warranty by a week, (how convenient) so I still have to pay the $130. I talked them down to about $104/25%-off, last night. But I just don't think I want to spend another $100 bucks on the hardware and then get another warranty to make sure it still keeps on going.
I still haven't taken it apart yet, but I can obviously see that heat does affect it's functionality, albeit with less and less reliability. So, my question is this: Say that the solder in whatever part is loose/bad whatever, of course it needs to be re-seated for a contact to be made. Will re-heating the board degrade the solder to a point where it doesn't make a good connection anymore over time? Has anyone had issues with this fix since successfully performing it around the July window. My other concern is that the solder may not be the issue, but an actual fitment of the components to the board (ie: warping, bad cuts, etc), which would be out of my hands.
Anyway I'm still trying to validate my decision either way. Don't want to pay, but don't want to disassemble.
h0dge
I'm in exactly the same boat.

0102 errors, freezing, out of warranty, and not sure whether I want to pay the ridiculous repair fee or try to fix it myself.

What's interesting is that my 360 is perfectly fine running original XBox games - no freezing at all on GTA:SA, Lego Star Wars 1, etc. I think the "bad solder joint" hypothesis is right on the money. In my specific case, I suspect the bad joint is on some aspect of the hardware that's used only by 360 games, and not by BC games.

I tried running 360 games in 480p, just in case that solved the problem, but they still freeze.

Is there any way to open up the case without voiding MS's repair offer? I understand they use a sticker to determine whether you've opened up the case. Can this sticker be removed and replaced? That would be the best of both worlds.
Jerk29
Yeah there is a sticker underneath the face plate positioned over a joint between the two halves of the case. I don't believe it can be saved. It will get messed up if tampered with. But, I'm thinking about it now and examining the case, with great earnest. Still need a heat source as well. Don't have a heat gun right now.
h0dge
Good news... I may have fixed my 360 <crossing fingers>.

1. Completely disassembled it (including both heat sinks)
2. Used compressed air to blow dust out of all parts
3. Removed the existing thermal compound from both heat sinks and both the CPU and GPU die
4. Did a modified version of the hot air gun fix - I didn't have a hot air gun, so I used a hair dryer on max heat. Figured at worst this would ensure the CPU and GPU dies were dry for the new thermal compound.
5. Added new thermal compound to both dies - heavy application. Covered all main chips, plus some extra.
6. Reassembled

When I first powered up, I got 2 red lights (overheating) and my heart sank.

However, when I took things back apart, I realized I didn't get the clamps on the heat sinks tight enough. You really need to get them in exactly the right position. When I got them tight, I reassembled and tried again.

Booted up fine, lights all green, and played saint's row for about 10 mins... no freezing, and it's still sitting on, hasn't locked at all.

Time will tell, but the early returns are promising.

I just got my 360 back from MS yesterday and it worked okay last night while I downloaded about half of the Dead Rising Demo. I start it back up today and I get three red lights. I was getting the 1,3,4 lights so I used the sync button and eject to get the code 0001 which is a power supply issue. How can I determine whats wrong with my power supply? Could it be overheating, does it need to be connected directly to a wall, does it matter if it has a 3-2 prong adaptor on it?
Jerk29
Well, the coolest news came in for me today, as MS has now decided that all systems manufactured before Jan 1st are eligible to be repaired for free. I am a very happy person. So that is what I will be using to fix my ring of death. Still this topic is very informative. Thanks everybody ; )

Thank you Microsoft. Apology accepted.

Now if I can just get through the line on their customer support number...
Team Modfreakz
Hallo!!
we did some simple overheating simulations to find out the right error report!

RESULTS:

CPU overheating @ approx. 67°C => error 0011
normal operating temperature: 41-49°C

IPB Image

GPU overheating @ approx. 52°C => error 0012
normal operating temperature: 36-45°C

IPB Image

die temperature is of course much higher, + 10-15°C

RAM temperature @ approx. 66°C => still no error
normal operating temperature: 40-52°C
We can also confirm that K4J52324QC RAM on graphic cards works at 75°C without errors!

IPB Image

Thats all at the moment. I hope it will help.

Hey guys.

Finally got a 0102 too,. my xbox started freezing randomly 1 day ago, suddenly then the three red lights.
I have had no metal foil under my cooling units, but anyhow I put some Arctic Silver on it.

I read a post about moisture that had build up on the mainboard, so I disassembled my box again and suddenly noticed these odd marks on the mainboard. First I thought they were caused by heat and burned in, but then I tried to wipe them away and with a little force I had success.

It'll take a while till I'm totally done, but hopefully this helps me with my 3-RedLights...

Maybe these pics can help to find out what the reason for a 0102 is. I think the 0102 can have different reasons as it may be some sort of general failure, which would it make really hard to fix these errors... :/

I'll post as soon as I completley wiped the mainboard and tested the box again...

my mobo looked exactly the same
pry manufacturing time it ended up like that

Bought my 360 a week ago, and the 3 rings of death surfaced thrice already (last was yesterday).. Basically, what happens is that while playing it suddenly goes off and the 3 rings flashes.. I wasnt able to get the error code because when i plugged it in again it was okay.. should i ask for a replacement? do any of you guys experienced this problem?
Joergen
The 3 lights is the most common problem and yes you should ask for a replacement. You'll soon have owned the 360 longer than you've actually had it when it sails the country for 2 weeks ;D

We have error 0102. we opened console and realized that the cpu (if im not worng , that chip is under the heatsink with pipe on it) is not warm up when console is on !!!
One of the fans also spins slow and the heatsink over the chip is not get warm !
Do you think the hot air gun can help us on this problem ?
Before this error , we haven't any error at all.
And with one other consoles we have error 0110 , we still don't opened it.
Fisrt console is used about one month and the second one is about 2 weeks !
Thanks

E68: Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it, This can also be caused by a Hard Drive Eprom Error. Some also believe this might be caused by a problem with the fans.

E68 fixed!

just as a note, i had been getting this error for months now, and it just got worse in the past few weeks when i started playing box again
last night i hooked up the hdd to computer, used xplorer360 to backup the hdd, then popped it into the 360 and formatted it
hooked it up and restored my backups

all is working good now
no more e68

Okay I have the 0102 error also. I can boot up as long as there isn't a disc in the drive and its been going for a couple of hours now without freezing. But, if I put in a disc (dvd or 360 game) it will freeze after pushing the start button to actually begin a game. Then if I reboot that's when I get the ROD and the light on the PS turns orange. I was actually waiting to hear back from M$ before I decided to open it or not. Now I see that M$ has agreed to fix all 360's manufactured before Jan. 1. But, how do I find out when it was made. Most of this was just to add to the knowledge base. I would however like to find out when my 360 was made.
Thx 4 ne help.

i'm going to go out on a limb after talking to many people about their error 0102 and say it's GPU related, possible bad solderjoints, overheating, whatever, but of the GPU

Well, the coolest news came in for me today, as MS has now decided that all systems manufactured before Jan 1st are eligible to be repaired for free.

Even Xbox 360 consoles that have the 'Microsoft' sticker underneath the faceplate tampered with, or removed? Just wondering, because my sticker has been removed (cut in half) but my console has never been opened. My shipment box to get my 360 replaced should be coming today. I doubt they'll still accept it, but it's worth a try. The manufacturing date was before Jan (10-10-05). I bought my 360 on the release and it died in June, finally giving it a shot a fixing it. wink.gif

I got a 0102 on a friends 360 i've chipped some weeks ago. Some days ago he 's got a pixeled screen and after reboot he got the three light of death. I renewed the termal paste of the GPU and now it's better then before, but it still freezes when I try to play a game, but no red light after reboot. I will try the renew the termal paste of the CPU today after work. In my case I think it's a termal problem.
Thanks to all in this tread for posting!

Also, I just got back from Purolator, just sent away. I sure do hope they accept it with my cut sticker!

Actually the service rep that handled my repair ticket, actually said it was a possible cold solder joint, and that it was not a good sign. He didn't specify what joint it could be, but there is something loose for sure.

As for the questions about the "ms" sticker, well I think it's a safe bet that the system won't be repaired with it missing. I was sooooo close to opening my system, but I heard this news first so I never removed the sticker. But good luck to those being sent in.

And someone asked about the manufacture date. It is on the back of the console with the serial number.

Are you sure they have no other ways to check if it's been opened?

The sticker under the faceplate is the 1st check method for warranty.. They can also see if there is visable case damage on the back where the clips are

I had error 0102 i decided to apply heat at about 5 cm distance using hot air gun steinel hg2000e at about 450 celsius about 3:30 minutes in circular movements and most time in gpu, but in ram and southbridge too, i hope not to damage the gpu Sad, when i reassembled it, still giving me error 0102, the dvd rom try to read but no more, no signal nuffin, could i fry the mobo? i have not applied too much heat on the back of the mobo and only im scary if i could fry the gpu...

Well, it's never been opened. Just a sticker removed, will they still accept it? Also, if it's not accepted, am I able to pay a repair fee?

Hello, just an update to the heatgun meathod. I was having error 0021 and i did the heatgun trick and IT WORKED!!

the console would not turn on at all before, would give 3 red light right away, but now it boots up just fine. I am still in the process of doing intense training but will update as I move along

Hi i got 1 xbox error 0102 code also but i change the ac adaptor it work fine so what is the problem i need to know wat the problem help pls
nrfrerich
I'm consistently getting error code 0102. Luckily, I don't have to try the heat-gun method since I never opened the console. When I called, they said the warranty had been extended to 6 months - so I just made my cut-off. (Sorry to rub it in anyone's face who was brave enough to open the console)

I do have a couple quick statements/questions:

1 - The support guy on the phone told me it could take 3 weeks to repair the console after they receive it from me. For anyone that has sent their console back to MS, is this a typical timeframe or does it typically get returned in a shorter timeframe?

2 - My 0102 error doesn't appear to be related to my HDD since it occurs with it removed as well. For anyone that has sent their machine back to MS, did they return your original HDD to you with a new/refurbished console, or is the HDD a new/refurb. as well? I'm concerned that I'll lose my dowloads that I paid for because their warranty clearly states they are not responsible for lost data on the HDD.

3 - I've heard some nasty stories about people getting really crappy refurbished consoles. What experiences have people here had?

4 - When you add up all the time I'm going to be offline (4 days to get a box from them, 3 weeks for them to fix it, and probably another 4 days to get it back to me) - you're looking at over a month of being offline. I asked the guy at the support desk what they planned to do to compensate me and he said I'd have to call and ask for Xbox Live when I get it back (but he didn't say what they would do). Years ago, when my brother had issues with his original Xbox and he yelled at enough people on the phone they shipped him a copy of Project Gotham I. What experiences have users here had as far as compensation from MS goes for these hardware failures (no, that's not supposed to be a joke...)?

I have recently been a victim of the 360 not booting and a black screen. I would occasionaly get an E79 which is supposedly a HDD error. I can't tell you what my secondary code is because I replaced the led's with a single color. Anyway, I tryed the heat gun method and it worked biggrin.gif . Or it could just be that completely disassembling and reassembling my 360 fixed it. Who knows. I've only played it for about an hour so far. If anything else pops up I will post.

Thanks to whoever for the heat gun trick.
TwiiK
Hi, I just registrered here to try and you help you guys out. smile.gif

I'm almost 100% sure the E 73 is caused by the 360 being to cold when first booted up. I recently moved my 360 up to my room and in the morning it's probably around 10 degress celcius here or even colder and it always show E 73 when first powered up. If I start it again it works perfectly.

TwiiK
I found no way to edit my last reply so here's another one.

After testing it out some more I'm pretty sure it's condensation that's causing E 73. I'm not sure what it does to the electronics, but it's never good to have water in your electronics. smile.gif

I don't get the error when I cool down my xbox, but if I play on it for a while so it's heated up and then turn it off and cool it down, I get the error when I turn it back on again. This is probably why it happens every morning when I turn it on as it was hot when I turned it off the night before and it cooled down rapidly in my bedroom.

Those marks are from the wash the board receives to remove resin residue are after the board runs through a solder bath. It's normal. I tried the heat gun rework and it worked on my sons 360. I'm convinced that many of these units were put together either incorrectly (not enough heat), improper type of solder, or bad BGA pad prep. They work fine off the assy line, but after a while the BGA pads come loose. Unfortunately I didn't know about the warranty extension, especially since this unit is only about 4.5 months old, or I would have sent it in. CRAP!!! Hope the fix sticks.

I tested it with another console tonight and it didn't have any problems starting up today, but on my own I now got E74. I tested it with 1 VGA cable (what I always use) and 2 composite cables and they all showed E74. It took 5 reboots for it to start normally again.

Ohhhh shit. My 360 just froze when i was playing halo 2. I restarted it and so far no 3 red lights. I think ill just leave it for a few hours and hope it still works ok

Well my fix for code 21 lasted through about 30 hours of gaming, and yesturday during the game it all shut down and red light. This time it doesn't look good at all. Makes fan noise for 1 second and then nothing at all after that. I get error code 0003, which is unknown as of yet, which totally sucks. will try the heatgun thing again

new error code!! (maybe not listed)

flashed the 0078fk fw on a v47 drive, to look if it works or not and if it possible to backup the firmware by software.
just a little test and look on firmware compatibility.

*as supposed*
the 46/47/59 drive does´t want work with 0078 firmware!! different hardware!!

get a E64 and a error code "1000"

btw: I get same error code if I use the phillips drive with wrong firmware!!

I'm trying to get info from people having freezing, no video problems with their 360. I did the heat gun fix with mine and it worked fine for about 5 hours. Now having the same problem again except now my Sammy DVD drive won't stay closed mad.gif

I'm just curious to know how many of you that are having problems are using the xtreme33 firmware. My 360 didn't start fucking up untill I switched from 32 to 33. I have had my 360 for almost a year and no problems until now. Any info will be helpful. Thanks

For those who were asking about the turnaround time on repairs.
Took about 4 business days to recieve my UPS box. Sent it out that night at a local pack n' mail. Thursday. Received the replacement back around 12 days later. That's seven business days! So I was rather impressed with the overall experience. I live in Florida and it went to Texas, so that's halfway across the country too.
Now all I have to do is see how the new one fares. So far it's great.
BasicAir
I had 0102 and first time with heat gun same thing. I tried it again with hotter setting (1000 degrees) and works. After 3 minutes though it went to messed up graphics and froze again. This time on reboot it didn't do 3 red lights which was nice but no picture either. After 10 seconds I decided I need to let it sit for a bit because it was abnormally warm.

Should I keep trying the heat gun again until it's fine for hours? I don't think I really got a choice.
BasicAir
I did the heatgun again last night but it still won't stay on for more than 5 minutes. Do you think I need to use some kind of cooling paste? If so, is there a good tutorial on how and where to apply it? I have never used the stuff before.

At least my 360 turns on now but it's still useless if it won't stay on.

I need advice. smile.gif
