Go to page 1 of this thread. It explains how to find a "secret" error code. You press the wireless controller button, hold it in, then push the eject button on the dvd tray. Your 3 red flashing lights will change to 1, 2, 3, or 4 flashing ones. That's your first number of the hidden code. If it's 4 lights then it's a "0" if it's 3 it's a 3, 2 it's a 2, 1 it's a 1. Keep doing that combo button press until you got your 4 codes. Look up that code (example: 0102) on the first page of this thread and you'll know what you can try.

By the way -- I'm still confused if I need to try the Arctic Cooler 5 or not. Again my 360 seems to be working fine except it gets really f'ing loud really f'ing fast (like 5-10 seconds) but it will stay on for 30 minutes -- I've had it on twice now for 30 minutes no problem but shut it off for fear I was doing damage.

If you shorted out the 5V on the 360 for some reason, and now your 360 has the error 0001 or 0002 (psu error), and using a different brick does not fix it, i have a *now confirmed working* fix:

IPB Image

The two MOSFETs circled in blue must be replaced.

The part number is NTD60N02RG:

http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/product.do?id=NTD60N02R

I posted the fix a while ago, but it was untested, but Smartmod has repaired his motherboard by replacing the FETs, so the repair is now confirmed working.

I am getting the 0001 error and my 360 got fried where I circled in blue, do they sell MOSFETs for that 12 Volt source? Will I also need to replace the little rectangle thing next to it? (as you can see im not sure what they are called)

Hey Guys,

If you can send it to M$ do so of course might as well make them pay for their mistakes by getting a free fix.

For those of us who are stuck

THE AV PROBLEM 0020????

Weak or bad Voltage regulators on the AV output of the board near the south bridge. THIS IS ALSO THE REASON WHY WHEN YOU TURN YOUR STEREO ON LAST IT MESSES UP! Its because you send a little bit of current through the av jack for the amplification. This will actually cause a discarge from your voltage regulator and the southbridge proccessing unit glitching the GPU and hanging up the console on either a black screen or GPU distortion. I have been able to fix this by resoldering Surface mount resistors and Voltalge regulators from the av board using a multimeter to test for the troublesome ones. Also try the heat gun fix, the gun can easily heat up hot enough to resurface weak solder joints, just remember no longer than 2 minutes, and wrap everything else in foil to protect it.

But yes, if you can... SEND IT TO MICROSOFT!!!!

Thanks,

Paul

BTW THE LITTLE BOX IN BLUE IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A VOLTAGE REGULATOR

use a multimeter and test the ones around it to find out its potential and then go to radio shack and solder one of their clunky ones on to it.

if it was just a defective voltage regulator it should fire up, but it something farther down the ic line cause it to burn up by pumping it to hard or if the DC current wave was oscillating incorrectly because the transformer in the brick is bad then it will probably just happen again.

Hi all. Im also having the 0102 code.

On my board the glitch seems to be on the GPU. Normally the system freez when trying to play a game.
First I thought it was the dvd-rom that was the problem because of lag when surfin menues and so on. (in-game, madden07). The system have always worked fine as long as you havent played..

Although boot difficulties comes up right after a lockup. And, 5 mins ago when trying to boot after a lockup, i got graphic glitches and another lockup right on the "360" opening screen. Here is where i could determine the "GPU glitch". The pattern changed when pressing the heatsink. And damn that heatsink is getting hot!

Just wanted to say that my observations support the bad solder theory. Another thing that supports it, is that various people have "glitches" on different components.

So I will try the hot airgun fix on friday, after practice. Wish me luck biggrin.gif

I E 69, and my HDD would no longr work. My friends, would, however, when they brought theirs over. So, I went out and bought a new HDD, and now this one isn't working. What's wrong?

I get this all the time when starting my 360 up, the box also makes this screeching noise. The error code on the tv says E65. All I do is restart the xbox and it works fine until the next time I try to start it up. This is bugging the crap out of me.

A friend told me to try the latest firmware, because that may be the issue (got a sammy). Xbox-scene suggests it is the HDD that's messed up, personally I have no idea.

Restarting seems to solve it, but I'm really looking for a permanent solution so that it doesn't come back the next time I boot it up. Any ideas?

Oh, and it only happens when I start the box for the first time in a while.

Just had to register this forum to tell my experiments. I bought dead xbox last week and it gave me 0020 code. i read that this had come someone when he tried hot gunning 0102. Just hour ago i tried hotgun method for my mb and notised that pcb warps quite a lot when its heated. Carefully looking GPU from side that holds video and power connectors I could see that corner GPU pins had come off the pcb. Now I just gave more heat and pressed GPU down with piece of wood and kept pressing when stopped heating. Now pins are connected. Let it cool for a while and then connected power and av cable (note didn't have dvd drive with me) and powered up. Now I get error code 0021 which is quite a improvement. Maybe this now comes because no dvd drive connected. Could someone confirm that does 0021 come when dvd is missing? I'll try to take macro picture where thoce pins can be seen.

Hi all,
This is my first post, firstly i would like to thank all the people who wrote of there problems and solutions.

My error code is 0102 the std problem code and this id how i solved it on my machine. (you mad find this a strange but true solution to the way i solved this problem.

1. first i tried putting on new heat sink to gpu paste but this did not do anything. (i to had the silver sheet between the sink and gpu.

2. i changed over the washers onto the underside as to lower the gap between the gpu and sink ( this did not do anything either.

3. Time for a changed a direction. I noticed that the fans on the board where going slow but still keeping the main sink cool where as the GPU chip was over heating. I then found out that the fan speed was controlled only by the main Big sink and not the GPU so here is the mad bit. i covered up the 3/4 of one side and the top of the sink with tape in the hope this would slow down the airflow through the chip and increase the fan speed thus, keeping the GPU chip cooler.

4. I also made an air diversion out of sticky tape (dont think this did anything ) This was to allow more air to be sucked from the GPU chip than the Main chip.

5. BINGO this worked the fans now spin faster and keep the GPU cool and no more freezing or blocking and the main cpu runs a little hotter but not that hot as to set off the heat switch.

here are some pics.

I will upload later as i need to find out how sorry.

The thinking behind my idea was to get the fans to spin faster and therefore cool the GPU chip and the only way i could see how to do this was blocking off the air flow on the main chip. I am no way a expert and i do not now how the fans work, all a now is if the cpu gets hotter the fans speed up so why not get the cpu a little hotter and get the fans going a little faster and gingo the GPU and CPU both get cooled down to gether.

What have you got to loose a bit of sticky tape try it before to go and buy some new heat sink paste.

Hope my input as been of some use to someone

mines been working great now for acouple of days i will post again to let you guys now how i'm getting on.

by the way i live in England but the temp in my lads bedroom is around 24 - 26 deg C.

P.S.
Basically i was did not fancy the air blower trick as i might melt the board.

Today down my local game station i found and new three fan box that bolts to the back of your xbox and allows more air to be sucked from it. The cost was £19.99 but if you haven't already cracked the seal it might be worth a shot before doing anything else and voiding your warrenty mine was already over so i opened mine and did my version of increasing the fan speed myself.

my xbox is still running fine with the above mod but if you haven't opened your box then try it the lady in the shop says its worked on loads of xboxes that have been playing up.

i dont think thats a "no dvd" error- when i have no dvd drive my box still boots up and gets into the dashboard. i didnt try running anything off hdd at that point but ive seen two different 360s boot with no dvd drives

what is the manuf date on your xbox? it might still be under warranty

i tried the Niko 3 fan system on my first 360 but the rate of freezing steadily increased until it would freeze and give 3 red LED error within 5 seconds of boot- the XBOX logo would show, then it would freeze right there and blink

ms repaired it, ive used it for 3 weeks and it is freezing within 5 mins of gameplay in dead rising, splinter cell and saints row

the cooler seemed to have no effect on the freezing for me in either case. time to send the xbox in again...

Can anyone explian error code 66...???

hi mate i got a few ppl ringing me with error code e66 after the update.

i think microsoft have bricked the 360s using error code e66 i am lucky enough to have not got this error message as my firmware is older than recent firmwares but yes i think it is a 360 upgrade clashing with your firmware mate.

DAZ THIS IS ME BRYDON MATE

I have applied the live update and have got E 66 on start up.

Which version of firmware are you using?
xEmber
Heres a thought. I can recreate the error codes people recieve on the box. How???? Well the USB Power is also the fan power, the controller power and at some point is branched as power for GPU MEM... well look at the back of an intercooler (nyko). look at the wires it intercepts, those are the USB wires. now put just a LITTLE bit more of an amperage draw on them, your choice how you do it. i did it with 2 fans running at 1.8 Amps and 12 volts. and guess what.. lol

0110 error!!!!!, i think there is not enough amperage supplied to power all things on the board. and it glitches out the memory, GPU or the like or some 0102 BS! on top of bad solder joints, and cooling issues if you got them. But yea, this amerage is definately a problem if they plan on splicing it so many ways!

I've added both E71 and E66 to the guide,

Though, could someone do me a favor and extract the 4 digit secondary code from an E71 and E66 console? I'd like to add it to the FAQ guide (credit will be givin of course)

If you do this please PM me the results

thanks beerchug.gif

Error code E76 shown on screen:

Apparently this is an unknown error, but i believe it's a HD error. Was playing PGR3 when the box crashed while accessing one of the download packs. Had E76 on the screen every time I restarted. Unpluged everything, plugged the lot back in, re-downloaded the update packs, problem solved it runs like a dream again!

I Believe that E76 is a network error code. I had this Error and plugged the network cable in after 2 days of failed booting it worked. You also replugged everything in and it worked. Hope someone is saved the 2 days of frustration if they get the same error.

I just got a premium 360 which the owner says has been freezing mid-game & has got steadily worse over the past few months.

I switched it on and it has 3 red lights, error code 0103 (definitely that, not 0102). Has anyone seen an 0103 before?

That's what mine does as well. It's an E71 (I actually saw the error message once). I'm waiting to see if there is a fix for it somewhere down the line. Currently, my results when powering on the system seem to go in phases. Sometimes it turns on fine, but will crash when I try to play games. Then It'll turn on and freeze with the checkerboard during the initial startup animation. The third thing it does is nothing at all (no sound or video). There is no pattern to the different results. It randomly does all three different things, but I've only ever seen the E71 displayed 1 time.

Has anyone had further problems with their xbox after using the heat gun method? I believe in the fix but I dont feel comfortable opening up my system in fear of screwing something up.

I think that Microsoft will more than likely extend the warranties for xbox's manufactured within a certain date. I know that they have already done systems made prior to Janruary 1st. Mine was manufactured March 2nd (bought April 7th) and Im just now having the code 102 failure. More than likely Microsoft will extend the warranty on systems made after Janruary 1st because of so many systems that have been breaking down and returned. They just dont want to do it because of the obvious money factor that its going to cause. But it will benefit them more and keep their customers more happy if they do just replace these broken systems. I think that it will just take some time before they do that, thats why I dont want to try voiding the warranty by opening it up. But who knows if they will ever do anything else.

I have thought about buying a new xbox then returning it but with my broken system inside. hahaha I think it will work, sometimes retailers scan the barcode on the xbox unit itself. In that case you just swap the stickers. Be careful though lol

ya but when you pay 150 for repairs just to get another used console thats going to do the same, whats the purpose just do it your self and keep your money. i mean there's ppl on here talking about they are on the 4th console. i myself just sent mine in for free cause its a 2005 but i know they are not going to fix cause i did the firmware mod on it but try them first since its free if not ill do the heatgun method after it comes back.

i never mentioned in my post that i was going to pay the $140, f*** that. thats half the damn price of the system itself. all i said was i dont want to open it up and use the heatgun method then microsoft decides to "extend warranties for consoles made from Janruary 2006, to April 1st" or whatever, then when i try to send my xbox in they refuse to fix it because its been tampered with. im just going to be patient and wait to see if they do decide to extend the warraties. if they dont, then ya i will be using the heatgun method.

Hey, I need some help with this. I've got it mostly apart but the last two screws holding on the CPU heatsink are b0rked. (There's always one... first time I've seen two though.) I want to try the hot air gun method and maybe add some thermal paste but I can't do it if I can't get the sink off, since I can't get at the bottom of the board. I could probably just tear the screws out but it'd be difficult to find replacements, and the system simply won't run unless both sinks are secured very tight, so that's not really an option. So how can I get these screws out?
I have error 0102, wouldn't even show a picture or anything. I got it to work sporadically by wrapping it in a blanket and letting it nearly overheat. When I rebooted it started up and I could bugger around in the dashboard for a while before it overheated. Since then I've had some success getting it to boot but it always freezes after a few minutes. (Usually some nice checkerboard patterns. Tapping the CPU/GPU with my screwdriver doesn't do anything, but it does seem like a bad soldering job given the other symptoms.) After that it keeps showing error 0102 until I shake it around and such for a while.

Also I noticed if either sink isn't held in very very tight it crashes right away with code 0011. So I suspect 0011 doesn't mean overheating (they're still pretty cool to the touch) but rather loose heat sink. smile.gif I can tell you right now it's not related to the DVD drive, hard drive or network as I've removed them all.

I got a strange mobo the other day, first time booting it up it went to 3 red lights, then after like three seconds it went to the section 4 only, but there was no video on the screen.

I turned it off and back on, this time it IMMEDIATELY went to the section 4, again no A/V.

Error code was 1033, not one I've seen.

Then, after that it booted fine and has run pretty good, but now it occasionally crashes or gives error E71 (secondary code 1013)

Hi.

I too have a 360 with the 0102 error. I've been reading about the hot air gun repair and it got me thinking about how I used to test bad distributors for ic cracks by pouring ice water over it then attempting to start vehicle (use cold to close crack). Anyways I stuck the damn 360 in the freezer for 30 minutes. It booted up and all was well until I heard the fans wind up to maximum and then crash (heat expanded bad solder spot). I have to agree that the heat gun method to reconnect contacts is a great idea and approach. I'm gonna do it tomorrow. Thanks for your info X-S forum.

here some photos and few lame videos : http://www.okee.org/XBOX360/

I have followed this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYv6b7MndJk , but with a simple 1650W air dryer during 4/5 min.

I'll hope this fix, will hold a long time.

sorry for my english.

I can directly relate this problem to the network port on the 360. if i dont have the network cable plugged in im fine, but if i plug in the cable i get the "RING OF DEATH", with error code 0020. This should be noted as a possible hardware failure.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for a very informative thread. I have just had my first X-Box hardware failure. Had the system for about two months now. In the middle of playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance the display went blank. No flashing red lights though. I turned off the console and when it tries to post I get the three flashing red lights. The error code that I get is 0103. I first tried unplugging all the cables and restarting, didn't help at all. I then tried the hardrive, which also didn't help. I have since left the machine to cool down for about two hours and still no success. I have tried powering on the machine with the AV cable unplugged and I get the four flashing lights so the error is after it checks for the AV signal.

My console is still under warranty and so its going back to Microsoft on Monday. I live in South Africa and know one of the guys at Microsoft SA so I am gonna see if I can be there when they open it up and try find out what I can about this error.

Will let you guys know as soon as I find out.

no video but everything work's then I got error 1000 then I unhooked it took it apart put it back toghther and got another error that was a weird one then took out the dvd drive and got another but after a week of scratching my head and looking over the mobo and dvd drive I found the problem and it can also lead to different error's I found this and alway's had a black screen.

I looked into the Rear at the A/V port inside's with a spot light and had noticed there was 5 pins that differed the way they were seated compared to other and were slightly pulled up and cringed back kind of and I assume this was cuased by someone tripping over the cord but when I pushed in one at a time and tested the error's some differed but after I stuck them all in and matching flush everything now work's great no red light's good clear picture and sound I almost junked the mobo cuase I had no clue what had happened but it is an easy check and thought it may help some other's to try that or at least look lol.

My Core 360 (MFR Date: 2005-09-22) went the way of the 0102 about 2 weeks ago. It was just fine then I put a DVD in to watch, then it froze. Turn off, rebooted, then the logo screen freezes with lines.

Having read numerous threads here, I feared what could be happening, so I left it off overngiht.
Next day, turned it on, no video, 0102.

Warranty was gone since I put on the XCM Black Knight full case mod.

So I tried the hot air gun fix and the thermal compund fix. And it worked.
It booted fine, I played a bit of Dead Rising (~5 mins.) Thought all was well.
Haven't been able to play since then 'cause of work.

Come back yesterday to play some Test Drive and it freezes in 15 mins.
I placed my hand on top of the 360 and found that it was warmer than before the 0102.
So I let it cool, and try Dead Rising, again freezing 15 mins in.
I keep reading the forums here and some suggest that the 360 actually cools better standing than lying down.
After this cooldown, I try standing it up and play Dead Rising, and it works for a good 2 hours.
I stop playing to eat out, but notice the side where the CPU heatsink is under, warmer than before.
I come back from eating, 0102.

I've read on these boards that the thermal compund fix causes the heatsinks to become hotter (because it does a better job of removing heat from the CPU/GPU) but the stock fans are now inadequate to remove the greater heat from the heatsinks.

Short of a water-cooled 360, are the fan mods enough to get rid of this extra heat? Or something like the XCM high speed air cooler?
Or do I just hot air gun fix this again?
abuzer1
Firstly I got 3 red light with error code 110(product date is 2006-04-23),I used hot air gun method and fixed all prob. After week xbox360 freezed sometime then I got 3 red light again but with different code is 21,I used hot air gun method again after finish when I test it I see on screen E72 and now my console can't turn ON anyway...I think this stupid console dead.

0102 finally got my launch box as well. dry.gif

I heat-gunned, applied AS5. and added ram sinks.

Worked well for a couple days, but still working intermittently. I get it to boot successfully maybe every 1/10 attempts. When it boots properly though, it'll work all day long as long as I leave it on.

I find that when it doesn't boot properly, if I let it sit while its on/error flashing and allow it to heat up a little bit, then reboot it it'll usually work fine... I just wish we had a definitive answer or reason for what was causing this error.

got my first 360 in june. worked great for about a month. got a few freeze ups & 1 e74 (av plug) within the first 2 months. i thought no biggie @ least mine works (i have been keeping up with all the unlucky 360 owners). then last week i get 3 rol with "0102" $H!T!. so i opened it and used a regular blowdryeron it for about 30-40 seconds. let it cool, and bam it worked.... for about 10 minutes. then it stopped putting out video, audio was fine. so i took it to a friends house hoping it was my av cable maulfunctioning. nope. then took it home & tried to "hairstyle" it again & bam it worked!... for about an hour. havent done a fan mod or thermal paste revamp. but whats next? I hope that a perm fix comes up soon. well thats my 2 cents on the 3xrol 0102 error grr.gif

I don't think a plain hairdryer is hot enough to do the job.

Hey All,
This is a great topic. I'm grateful for communities like this where we can see that others are having the same problems with their poorly manufactured xbox 360.
Anyway, I've got a February xbox 360. Bought in March. Haven't played it a crazy amount. Recently it fell over from the standing position into a diagonal position when my dog bumped it. I was playing Ghost Recon at the time. Ended up dying in that mission. Back to the save point to try again and it freezes up just after getting the video for that screen up. Restart and it freezes again. I figure somehow that mission is corrupted by the console falling over. Play on a different profile and all is well for a while. Eventually getting close to that spot where it froze again, and it freezes. Whatever, might be a problem with the disk or something. It does appear to be scratched (by the laser head) in a circle around the disk. My roommate tries it one day and I don't think it even gets past the game cofig screen. Turn off, back on, red light ring of death! Multiple reboots and no luck. Also no warranty. 90 days shows great faith in your product by the way! Way to go M$! Read on here some people had had success fixing themselves, so I give it a shot. I don't have foil on my processors or heatsink. Just a whole pile of thermal compound which has squished out from the die and got all over the caps on the top of the processors. Nice! Cleaned it all of because it is somewhat conductive and replaced with AS5. Put a couple of little heat sinks on the two ram chips that are accessable. Ran the heat gun over it for good measure and it worked. Figured I'd give it the real test so fired up Ghost Recon again on the "corrupted" mission, and it failed again. Froze up once in same spot. Froze again at config screen. Ejected disk and put another one in and BAM, ROD! Wicked! So it barely ran for 5 minutes in total so I have my doubts that it was heat related. Seems to have accessed corrupted data and somehow failed. I can't see a bad solder joint or anything like that failing at the same place in the same game multiple times. I don't know what the heat gun fixes but I'm pretty sure it's not re-flowing bad solder joints. It takes like 700C directly on a solder joint to reflow solder, and that's with flux. Can't see hot air reflowing anything. I'm not saying it doesn't work. It seems to have worked in many cases, but I just don't know about the actual cause of the failure. Lets all remember this thing is running some form of Microsoft OS. I'm sure nobody here has seen Windows lock up right! Could it be software related? Could it be caused by a firmware update? I don't know. I'll try the fix again and not run Ghost Recon this time. I'll report what I find.
Keep up the good work investigating what M$ won't. Cheers.
