We have a box with 0110 error and ROD. we did "rubber trick" and it worked for couple of hours then error changed to 0102. we removed X clamps then error changed to 0101 and 0103 !
now, when I push GPU heatsink or 2 Ram chips on top of the board, system is boot-up properly and when I release pressure on chips , it's freeze !
I think this 0101 and 0103 has something to do with GPU or RAM.
Thanks

I Hav recently got the 0102 error It all started when I Played an original xbox game called FIFA Football 2003
and it froze during a two player vs each other now all I get is the red rings of death I haven't contacted MS
Yet but this error seems to be A biggie so I will do so in a couple of days thanks for the forum guys

I fixed the 0102 error with the heatgun a couple of days ago and now my 360 is working great.

Initially the screen would freeze up and become pixelated, like a 'chessboard' or 'rain'. Soon afterwards I developed the 3 red lights. My box has a manufacture date of November 2005 and had worked fine up until now.

I didn't fancy forking out £80 to M$ so I read through this forum. Initially I used a hairdryer as I didn't have a heatgun at hand. My box went from not booting to working for a few hours until it crashed again.

Now I have used the heatgun trick, applied Arctic Silver 5 on the GPU and CPU and added an internal fan. I have played pretty much non stop for the past two days and fingers crossed the problem is solved.

I have to say, the information and guides provided here have been excellent and are greatly appreciated. On a side note, I have noticed many Novemeber 2005 boxes going the way of the dodo recently, anyone else?

Heres my 3 RLoD story.

I bought the 360 Jan 29th 06 as a B-day present for my girl (shes a gamer so it went over well). She never really had a problem with it, it would easily do 6-12 hours of gaming without a problem. On Feb 13th the unit locked up playing GoW, I reset it and it would lock up with graphic artifacts during the boot logo. Called MS, they knew it was out of warranty by only 15 days and refused to waive the repair fee. So I told them to STFU. I took it apart and replaced the thermal crap with some Arctic Silver 5. Put it back together and we were good for about a month (I'm guessing I got lucky and removing the board might have made it flex enough to get whatever poor solder joints I had to connect. Then the AS5 helped keep it cooler then it had been.) When moving the unit from the basement to the upstairs I got the 3 RLoD! Error 0102. So I went out and picked up a heat gun and followed the video instructions. We have been working for a day now and I'm pretty sure the AS5 and the heat gun fix will keep me good for at least another year.

I cut the GPU heat sink to add some Zalman heat sinks to the ram on the top half of the board. I put a set of the elastomer pads (from a newer completely dead 360) that MS added in the newer 360s on the bottom ram chips. Also when removing the thermal crap M$ had on there I used Goo-Gone with a toothbrush to make sure everything surrounding the chip die was completely clean.

The unit has been vertical for about the first 60% of its life, and horizontal for the later 40%. When the unit was vertical it was in a poorly ventilated entertainment center. It's in a completely open shelf (No back or sides, its a glass shelf supported by 3 metal rods.) when horizontal.

Does anyone know the CFM of the stock fans in the 360? I would like to replace the stock fans with the whisper fans if it can actually be proven that they really do have a higher CFM. I feel that would be a wise decision on my part since I have reduced the surface area of the GPU heat sink.

I hope some of this helps someone to fix their bricked 360.

On a side note, a friend who has error 0022 tried the heat gun trick and it did not work for him.

ive had a xbox with a 0103 code. i have got him to work. i did the hot air trick and than i did the toothpick trick, and now it finally works. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif. i bought this thing on ebay for about €80 and he allready gave this error. i thought it was a 32 version but its a 52 sad.gif

Hi all,

Fixed a 360 last night. When it reached me it didn't boot at all, just giving 0022 (GPU error). Took it out of the case, it started giving 1033 (unknown). Got it to boot by holding Connect
down and powering it off, then left it for 5 mins and it was back to 0110 (memory error/overheating). Took it all apart, removed heatsinks and thermal goo and attacked it with my mate's hot-air rework station (affectionately known as the Death Ray): reflowed the GPU and memory, put the heatsinks back on with some Arctic Silver and it booted first, second, third and fourth times. Needs soak-testing but I'm pretty sure it's fixed now.

So, 0020 and 0110 can be fixed by reflowing the GPU and memory, respectively. My guess is that 1033 is something else that lost contact when I flexed the board removing it...southbridge maybe?

This thread is very helpful biggrin.gif Cheers for sharing, all!

Top post updated.. Some new info, some new info on a few errors, some more defined info on existing errors, Also I changed the formatting slightly to make it easier to find certain things and I added a new hidden code that supposedly resets failed system/game updates... it was an anonymous tip so I have no idea if it will work or not.

More updates coming soon I have a backlog of tips in my PM box.

Today, I tried to boot up my system, and encountered the following problem:

1) the central symbol on the power button lights up (normal yellowish green color)
2) the 4 surrounding rings that used to always swirl around no long do so
3) No image nor sound is present. I've tripled checked and confirmed that the av cables are properly plugged in
4) The disc drive is still ejectable (putting a disc in has no effect)
5) Pressing the tiny white button used to interface with the wirless controller is a fruitless affair sad.gif

Can anyone hear diagnose my problem or perhaps offer some potential solutions?
Thanks in advance

not sure if this is the right place to post this info but here you go..

I had a E79 Error which also had 3 Red lights on boot !?.. This error is down as Harddrive problem well i tried various things, swapping drives, memory cards, general fiddling and nothing would help.

The last resort was to try the Heatgun method , this has fixed the problem.. Hope this helps someone

Try powering off and rebooting several times, if it's crashing on boot then hopefully you'll get a 3-red code doing this. One I have crashes booting sometimes, if you power it off and straight back on then it fails the startup checks and gives you the red lights.

Trying to fix an 0102 at the moment, got it all reflowed and but only gives 0110...tried redoing the thermal paste twice (started off with generic no-brand, tried reapplying in a thicker layer as it looked a bit patchy, then replaced with Arctic Silver 5) and nothing's made any difference. All the heatsink screws are tight (one of them was stripped so I Dremeled across the head and used a slot-head driver to get it nice and tight) and the clips are holding OK. Haven't got any shim material handy at the moment, is that worth a shot though?

I've tried powering off and rebooting it several times, but the same thing happens - no 3 red code, just the central symbol being lit up

E76 have been confirmed now.

E76 is network error related.
if the trace that you connect point Y on MNE chips is distrupted to the microprocessor
the machine will report error E76 this was discovered by misstake during a routine machine repair.

thanks too www.playforce.se technical dep for the info.

Hi when i turn on my xbox 360 the led 1 and 3 turns on and it turns loud. I have the error code 0011.
i think i made a wire touch these two places when it was on.

Your Xbox 360 is overheating. Leave it off and take out the plug. Then leave it for a few hours. Then reconnect the plug and turn the console back on and it should be fine.

I'm new to this website, so don't give me too much hassle.

Hey everyone. Just wanted to post here so I can become a statistic. Bought my 360 on Dec. 2 2006 and it crapped out on me March 6 2007. 4 months. Wow. Thing is, I haven't even played it THAT much. I game some on the weekends, but with work I don't have time to put in long hours on the machine during the week. Followed the guide on the first page of this thread and found that I have error code 0102. That really sucks, but at least it's still under warranty.

Love the system, but this is ridiculous. I had one of the first original Xbox models, which I have modded and had to open many times, and it's still running fine today 4+ years later.

Anyway, I guess I'm lucky to still be under the 1 year warranty, sorry for you all whose broke a bit after the first year sad.gif .

Hope I have better luck with the new one they send...

Hey everyone-

I've had my 360 since launch day, November whatever 2005, and within the last couple weeks it finally bricked on me (and right before Guitar Hero). So, I called MS and they said I'm out of warranty and I wanted to try and fix it on my own as I don't have the 130 bucks to pay them.

Mine won't even boot to the dashboard, and when I try to get the error code it seems to come out as "0203" which isn't even listed on the first page. It blinks 4, then 2, then 4, then 3. So I know I'm doing it right, but no idea what is wrong. I have done the towel trick, and that will fix it for a few days but then it goes back to the blinking red. Removing my hard drive does nothing, and when it boots properly, none of my data is corrupt, my gamercard loads fine, it still saves everything, etc.

I've noticed that the DVD drive is what makes a majority of the noise while the console is on. If I'm just tinkering around in the dashboard or listening to music I have on my hard drive, it's very quiet, but if I'm playing a game, the drive is quite loud. Almost like it is spinning too fast or working too hard, I'm not sure.

So, any ideas? I'm going to crack it open if that's what it takes, as it won't even start up..but I'm not sure what fix to even start with.

Here's a story of multiple error codes...

First I got 0021 occasionally but the console worked usually with a few restarts. Then later it turned to give me constantly 0102.

Then I did the famous towel trick, first it gave me 0022 which is the GPU overheating; then I let it cool down for a few moments and it actually worked for a few hours after the towel trick (cold solder, I'm sure) but for not too long; during gameplay the console hang: the screen jammed and gave those already well-known gpu-error boxes in the screen. Then I shut it down and it gave again 0102. This was two days ago.

Today I turned it on; it worked and I started to download content from the marketplace. It hang again after a few minutes; the same gpu-error as described above. Then I turned it off and on again. It gave 0020 - what is this? It can't be overheating because the console was on only for a few minutes (like less than five). After a restart it now gives me again the good ol' 0102.

And yes, I've already called support and the repair process has been started so the console will go to repair in less than a week, I just wanted to post this ridiculous story of multiple error codes. :-)

I have the most odd 0102, one of the 3 things will happen

A) the red lights of doom
cool.gif freezing about 5 mins into game
C) working 100% for however long the 360 is on.

I had it plugged into same multiplug as my pc and I had a power failure, my pc power supply started acting up (wouldnt switch on everytime) and I know 0102 isnt a power supply error but is it possible that it could be ?

First off I would like to thank xbox-scene for all their wonderful resources and all the other dedicated websites out there that want to help the consumer. Microsoft wants to milk us all for every penny we are worth to them.

I recently had my xbox start giving me the dreaded 0102 code and was dumbfounded by its sudden appearance . Looking all over the net for reasons why I came here. I heard about the "towel trick" and doubted this would work. Deciding "what the hell, I'll try anything as I'm out of warranty" I "put her in the oven" so to speak. After removing towel I powered on and it worked temporarily. This led me to believe there was a cold solder joint on the gpu as has been talked about in several forums I've visited. BTW......I would not recommend towel trick to anyone as has been said before that the heat is horrible for your components. I proceeded to disassemble and remove gpu heatsink. After that I removed mounting bolts from heatsink. Then I used a steel razor blade(there are way better ways to do this I'm sure, I was in hurry and don't recommend this) and shaved the aluminum down slightly around holes in heatsink. This was done so I could screw the mounting bolts into the heatsink itself farther than they were originally. Also, I took the x-clamp and bent it slightly outwards(very carefully) so as to put more pressure on heatsink when reinstalled. Had to have help from a buddy putting back on as it took a lot of force to get back on. Put 360 back together and proceeded to boot. Dashboard loaded first time I booted(it had been to the point it wouldn't display anything before fix) and I proceeded to play 6 titles for at least an hour a piece. Hasn't froze one time since and all my backups play flawlessly also.

P.S. It's true, Microsoft doesn't give a crap about you if you've opened your console. Kid on phone at service number literally told me they wouldn't even repair a console if I PAID for any repair needed(I wasn't asking for warranty service, just repair service). He said(and I qoute) "You're screwed and we won't do anything to help you make your console work because you've opened it. Great business practices eh? Telling the consumer that they can't PAY for their console to be repaired under any circumstance because case was opened. Glad I didn't pay now..............

Forgot to mention in last post that I very, very, very carefully cleaned old thermal paste(which there was way to much in the first place) off of the gpu and heatsink and applied Arctic Silver 5 before reinstalling gpu heatsink. This all might sound a little complicated to some, but if you take your time and be careful you will be ok. My warranty was up so I was left with little other choice than to try to fix my brick myself.
rebuad_neb2004
I wanted to try and repair a broken XBOX 360 since I have had such success with XBOX1. So I bought a bricked XBOX 360 that had a faulty DVD drive in it... It was out of warranty and M$ wanted the $130 to fix it... "Ya right!!!" I started by testing what the thing would do. It would play music from CD but wouldn't load DVDs or any games... I decided to try and adjust the DVD voltage pots and BINGO, played a DVD just fine... I then put in a game and it froze at the first graphic that popped up. I shut the console off and received two red lights with an error code of 0110. So I shut it off and called M$ to see if they would at least tell me what the codes mean and the guy told me, and I quote, " if M$ wanted me to know they would have put it in the documentation" Big thanx goes out to a corporation that is totally dedicated to customer service. So I found on here that it means there is an overheating problem... I then let it cool and took the motherboard out to inspect it and I found that it got so hot so quick that the resisters on the bottom under the GPU had actually fallen off. Not all of them but about six. I then found that one was about to fall off under the CPU. I realized that the solder was not uniform between the resisters which leads me to believe that it is a manufacturing defect... Some if not most suffer from this defect I would imagine... So I decided to try turning it back on with the missing resisters and low and be hold, it came on and then froze during a game. I turned it off and back on to find the T.R.O.D. with the code 0220 I then tried a few resets and came up with a code of 0022 then 0110. I then said screw it it was free anyways and bridged all the connections where the resisters are supposed to be and believe it or not the thing came back on and froze again with the error code 0011.

Most of these codes are overheating codes but it makes me wonder about what caused it, "besides me going in and messing around". I have concluded that while the console is warm the resisters that are not securely soldered to the board will break there connection. Then they will act like a wrench in the gear... They may not cause a problem immediately but they will in fact be the force behind the death of a console. When I get my own XBOX I will ride the warranty and the day after it expires I will crack my case and rework any of those resisters that look like the could be a problem. I will then mod the heat sinks so as to keep it cool. I hope that my adventure helps in some way...

P.S. If anyone has any suggestions on how I should put what little of the XBOX is left to good use with testing or reading chips and knows how to do it, I will gladly give my time and try!

I think I know what's happening but am not sure. If you can verify what I'm saying is accurate, that'd be great.

OK, first off, I bought a "broken" 360 with the intent on fixing its problem. It was a 0102 error and I applied the heat gun trick to it and all seemed fine.

Mine would play for hours after the fix with no issues, unless I played a heavy GPU intensive game. Then it would play for about 5 minutes and freeze. I was all set to redo the heat gun trick thinking I was too conservative in its application that it might not have worked flawlessly.

What I discovered upon taking the 360 back apart was that I had not applied thermal compound to one portion of the GPU die. There are 2 dies on the GPU chip--a large one and a smaller one. I had overlooked the smaller one for some reason.

What this leads me to believe is that on normal 2D games, the larger die is the primary GPU while the smaller die is for 3D--since that makes the most sense of my symptoms.

Instead of resorting to the heat gun again, I just reapplied thermal compound to the dies correctly and did some testing. I'm still in the middle of testing but I did find that after the thermal compound was applied correctly that the games (no matter what I was playing) played for hours but would still lock up on a heavy GPU game after about 2 hours.

I reapplied the heat gun trick last night and have a friend testing the system today for multiple hours and hours since I have a day job and don't have the time.

So, what I'm wondering is when you notice the system playing for hours on end, what type of game are you playing? When it locks up after 5 minutes, what type of game are you playing?

Could it be the game type?

Also, I wanted to thank everyone here for their input as its been invaluable to me. Thanks.
KennethKaniff308
Well, 3 lights are back. I probably got about 10 hours of play after I had messed with the gpu heatsink. Gettin blocks after a couple minutes of playin saints row. Doesn't matter which game. The same thing happens on them all, backups and originals. I know its not the dvd drive as I can backup all my games. Gonna try checkin out heatsinks again this morning. This console makes my temples pound like no other..............

Will keep all updated on success or no.............

found out what error 0020 is , after a long time of experimenting , i found out that its a bad connection in the vga/bus chip , yes the ati chip connections onto the board is weak (as always) and it some times cracks open when the heat raises in (some cases) , and in other cases whaen thae board is moved ,bent , or some thing which makes the pins disconnect ,
so , to solve this problem , (for the very experienced professionals only)
you have to heat the chip with a heat gun on a very high heat , but be careful not to burn it , dont use any flux or paste at all , and dont forget to clean the old compound paste , its not good to heat it while so , this will make the connections get soldereed correctly , but belive me its really hard to to know when to stop heating , thats why just a well experienced guy with heat gun should do it , and never ever touch the chip while its hot , if you did ,it will definetly be blasted , the solder balls might move and make a disaster , and you dont want to remove the whole chip and redesolder it , its almost impossible
rocky69
what temp should I have the heat gun at. I dont want to melt anything because mine can go to 1300F.

Not that its helping the thread (sorry mods), but I just wanted to correct something about the Xenos. All rendering is done by the larger die which is then sent over to the daughter die (eDRAM) for added effects like AA, z alpha blending, etc, which is then sent over to the system memory and so forth wink.gif

In short, X360 doesnt have a gpu that separates 2D and 3D applications, just wanted to clear that up smile.gif

I've got ahold of a 0020 error code unit, havn't had a chance to look at it as of yet, recieved the error right on power up (from cold) so i'm not sure about it being tied to overheating, anyone else here ever had a unit with 0020?

Im getting a 0020, have no fucking clue what it means.

I think i figured out exactly what code 0020 is. There isn't a particular error associated with overheating. Instead, there are different areas where an internal error can occur, which are likely caused by overheating.

Each code refers to a certain area of circuitry where the problem exists.

Code 0020 seems to refer to the circuitry between the Microsoft XSB chip and the AV port of the 360 on the motherboard.

This also explains why people who receive a code 0020 usually experience difficulties (4 flashing red lights) before the 'fatal' 3 flashing red lights.

Having not experienced any of the other errors (besides 0020) personally, I haven't taken the time to find where exactly on the motherboard the other errors take place.

Anyway, having the codes control different sections of circuitry makes more sense for Microsoft. That way, when they receive a broken unit, all they have to do is check the code and repair that area of the motherboard.

This is just a theory. I'll update exactly what the problem is when i have a chance to address it with the right tools later tonight.

Thanks for that skibum, good luck with your findings..

Another unit I now have is giving the 0002 error code, but doesn't reflect the definition specified on this topic. The unit in question doesn't boot up correctly (fans will spin up for a second then switch off, the PSU light remains Orange. BUT the ROL comes up with the 3 reds to give the 0002 code.

Notice to those with the 0002 error - The x clamp replacement bolts and washers doesn't help.

Great first post Skibum, welcome to XS.

I recently got another 360 off eBay (3 Red RoL), it works fine after X clamp replacement, (RBJTech method) but on occasion can give 0020, and sometimes green fuzz on the screen when it boots.

After reading through some of the posts on the last page I thought I should add, I noticed this 360s mainboard is warped near the AV port, the board bends upwards.

I think that's some quite strong evidence towards error 0020 being a solder joint problem in that area of the mainboard.

That's good to know. tongue.gif

What I did find out though, through some testing is that on my 360 it would lock up after about an hour of play even after the heat gun trick was applied. (I had the 0102 code).

After trying various things including reapplying the heat gun and even a different way of attaching the heatsinks, I have found a solution for my system that seems to work.

1) Apply heat gun trick
2) Apply thermal compound to both heat sinks--I use Melcor thermal compound TG-002
3) When reinstalling the motherboard to the frame, do not tighten the motherboard screws (small screws) completely, leave them about 1.5 to 2 turns off of tight

My theory is that the board flexes too much during runtime and if the screws are secured tightly the board near the screw will remain in place while other parts of the board expand with the rising temperatures, thus pulling interconnects apart in places on the board. Not tightening the screws completely allows the board to "flex" or expand a bit as the board heats up.

Mind you, this is only a theory and only allows the board to expand by a small percentage. If the board has really bad interconnects to begin with, this will likely not help anyone in this circumstance.

I haven't tried 3+ hour gaming as my schedule rarely allows me such convenience, but it has worked up to the 3 hour mark on the few occasions I've tried this.

I make no claims this will work on all 0102 errors but do claim that so far it has worked on mine. My 360 was picked up off ebay with the 0102 code and wouldn't even boot. After only the heat gun trick, it worked for about an hour or so and then lock. After my screw procedure, that working timeframe has lengthened to 3 hours.

Maybe this will help someone else in this situation. I hope so.

I figure I may as well add my name to the list of those who have the 0020 error code. now for mine it happened today immediately after the spring update was downloaded during the reboot. don't know if this makes any difference or not but thought I would share anyway.

and my system had only been on for a grand total of less than 3min. before it happened.

well i just got the ROD and error 0020.tried the heat gun fix.on low 2min for each cpu and gpu on top side, same for bottom and then 1 min on high total for both on the top and same for the bottom and now it wont post.

i cut it on with no video cable and the 4 red lights blink.turn it on with video cable and it lights up green but never even looks for the controllers, just sits there...the fans and drive work and the light on the PS turn green,so i guess i got it a bit to tosty.crap just had to happen right when C&C3 came out..

i just dont get what screwed up to begin with.it never crashed or locked up and played fine the last time i played it,pluged in my controller to charge, cut it off.later that night the controller was thur charging so i turned on the 360 for about 30sec cut it off so my hub would stop pulling power, and the next day at start up i had the ROD..how does something screw up when turned off?

Mine won't even boot to the dashboard, and when I try to get the error code it seems to come out as "0203" which isn't even listed on the first page. It blinks 4, then 2, then 4, then 3. So I know I'm doing it right, but no idea what is wrong. I have done the towel trick, and that will fix it for a few days but then it goes back to the blinking red. Removing my hard drive does nothing, and when it boots properly, none of my data is corrupt, my gamercard loads fine, it still saves everything, etc.

i have had the same code, 0203. does anyone know what this means? or is it a new code thats with the spring update?

i cannot send mine back to MS, so a few headaches are coming my way!

Help!

Hi, I also had the 3 red flashing lights and I had it for a couple of month now. Recently I found a great solution in a tech support site that help me fix my problem. Now it work like new, and I believe that this fix is permanent not like the towel trick. They show it with step by step information and photos!

Here is the page for the 3 red flashing lights solution

I really works!!! but don't do it if you still have your warranty because it will void it...

Good luck

Thanks for that skibum, good luck with your findings..

Another unit I now have is giving the 0002 error code, but doesn't reflect the definition specified on this topic. The unit in question doesn't boot up correctly (fans will spin up for a second then switch off, the PSU light remains Orange. BUT the ROL comes up with the 3 reds to give the 0002 code.

Notice to those with the 0002 error - The x clamp replacement bolts and washers doesn't help.

Same problem here Alex, went from error 0102 to working with heat up and x clamps, now its error 0002.Some site are listing it as psu error, this one says network error.
Trouble is can`t even heat it up as the board gets no power/fans spin only for a second.
Do you know how to fix or is it beyond it?.I`ve seen i can get a heat gun for 15 quid but that looks like a temp fix at best.

Might as well post my experience.
Purchased a 360 last year. Mfg-3/25/2006. I flashed with firmware 5.3d. Updated to new spring update. I tried a bunch a different games that night and all was well.

The next morning out of nowhere I got the 3 red blinking lights. Ohh Sh&T! I then checked the hidden code and came up with 0023. I took the 360 apart from there and tried the Heat Method where you take a heat gun and try to reflow the solder. It didn’t work. Then tried the overheat method. I turned on the Xbox got the 3 blinking lights. Soon they became 2 blinking lights.

I turned the 360 off at exactly 2 minutes. I let the 360 cool for around 10 minutes. I plugged in the power and tried again. Still 2 blinking lights. I then rebooted and WALLAH! I have GREEN!

I proceeded to clean of the GPU and the CPU where the heat sinks connect the best that I could. Meaning, I saw a shiny layer but there was still a thin film. I purchased some Arctic Silver 5 and spread about 2 mm worth over the chips.

I cleaned up the heat sinks also with a scraper and a blade. I put the heat sinks back on and attached the Xclamps. I then started to put the system back together but I didn’t put the screws back in that holds the heat sinks to the metal body of the 360.

I have played on the system for at least 14 hours and no problems. Thanks to all who have compiled all the info!!

My 360 finally decided to die on me today. Had problems with it for the last two months or so; first the sound cuts out in-game and eventually freezes. Luckily its still under warranty (only bought it 6 months ago!) so have sent it back to Microsoft. Got the E79 code and a 0100. Does anyone know what type of hw failure a 0100 is? blink.gif
