Has any one been succesfull in solveing the 0022 error i am still working on i would lvoe any advice thkz
Done two of these with the heat gun.
First one would never boot, always gave 0022. Took it all apart, tested it again, and it gave 1033. Reflowed the GPU and memory, repasted it and it worked first time. Always managed to boot up, left it soak-testing (playing a DVD) and after about half an hour it crashed with 0110.
Second one alternated between 0110 and 0022 (never booting), so I guess they're very closely related.
Reflowing the memory and GPU look like a good start, at least. I'm going to try the X-clamp replacement on both to see if they improve, but I'd start with a good reflow and hope you get lucky.

To reset the display settings of the Xbox 360 console to the default settings, follow these steps:
1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
2. Turn the console off.
3. Turn the console on.
Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn the console on by using the Xbox Guide button on the controller. Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller will have the upper-left quadrant light illuminated.
4. As the console starts, press and hold the Y button, and then pull the right trigger at the same time.
5. The Xbox Dashboard resets the display settings to the default settings, and then automatically restarts the console.

Hi, I just joined today because I woke up this morning with a messed up 360.
I played about 10 hours yesterday, and installed an update to my 360 a few days ago so that I could play more original Xbox games on my 360. This morning, when i turned it on, the lower right section (section 4) blinked red and E 73 appeared on the screen. My error code is 1021, which i haven't seen at all in this topic or anywhere else. I've tried unplugging everything, taking out the hard drive, etc., but nothing has worked. I might try fixing it with a hair dryer, but don't want to void my Microsoft warranty if it doesn't work.
Thanks in advance!

Hmm I took apart my 360 and found that my "ball bearing switch" that determines whether the console is horizontal or vertical is different from other pictures I have found on the internet (sorry that the picture is so bad, but it is still visibly different from other ones on the internet). Would this have any effect on my problem? If not, does anyone know what a different one might do?

i have the three red lights of doom

. i have no clue as to why it is happening

. my 360 just started doing it today for no reason somtimes it starts up a game but then it freezes and a sort of checkerd pattern shows up and wen i restart it the red light show up.but every time i turn it back on the red lights dont always occur until its been on for a few minutes. does anyone know wuts wrong and how i can fix it.
My box started giving me the 3 red lights yesterday, found this thread today and determined it's code 0102. I e-mailed Microsoft yesterday about it, but I can't find the invoice/packing slip from the order anywhere (my mom bought it from ebgames for Christmas). If I can't get a hold of another invoice through her, which I probably won't be able to unless we go through the credit card company or something, then am I up s**t creek without a paddle when it comes to the warranty?

Hi guys. Im really getting annoyed and fairly upset with the ring of lights now.
One day all of a sudden i got the 3 lights, having not played it for about a week. I quickly checked the internet and i determined i had the error 0020, but I cant understand it been a overheating problem because of how long it had been off.
Anyway i put on some new thermal paste, called Formula 5, here in the UK, nothing worked.
Yesterday I took it to a local shop and he tried and tried but could do nothing. I now get the code 0110.
This evening I opened it up and again it still doesn't work. When I remove the heat sinks I now only get 2 red flashing lights.
what do you recommend, should I get some new heat sinks?
thanks for all the help guys

Just wanted to make a quick post to show my appreciation for all of the good information and support here!
I got the three rings of death and read every one of these pages. Decided to try the most risk-free methods and did both the "eraser trick" and the "toothpick trick". I put my 360 back together and voila! .. all is happy and well. I played Halo2 Live for an hour or so and then tested out a couple of other games for a bit... hopefully the fix is here to stay!
Cheers again for all the good support!

Well my Xbox 360 just died yesterday. I woke up and played some Perfect Dark Zero and the Xbox 360 crashed. I restarted it and played Gears of War for a while. Then I turned the 360 off went out for a few hours, and what happens when I get back... Bingo! The Red Ring of Death. Error Code 0102. At first I let the 360 rest for a while, and when I turned it on I got to play 3 hours before its final crash. Now I cant start it up at all. Luckily, I'm under warranty and I'm currently waiting for the coffin.

Just wanted to let you guys know I got a 0020 error code with my 360. It was running flawlessly up until the incident. One day it ran fine for 3 hours, the next it wouldn't run at all. It would run but gave no video output, power supply was fine and hard drive was removed. I've already cracked it open and reapplied some thermal compound to both the CPU and GPU with no positive results. I've actually shed some blood working with the damn thing.
I just recently read about a resoldering technique you guys have been talking about. I'm not sure I will try it or give it to corporate BS and pay the $130, rather than get a new one. I will say that after leaving it unused for about a week and turning it on it worked just fine, played a game for about 3 minutes, and turned it off. It gave the same error when turning it back on. This was all before I tried to fix it, so it must be something loose, like a pin. I think we can confirm that the 0020 is a loose pin or overheating problem in the GPU to AV out section.

Hi, I have repair 9 xbox360 with the x-clamp replacement, but today in one of them I get error 74, so I came here to found info about it, and it didn't found something that help me, now I have dessambly the xbox again, and found that in the back of the GPU, is missing a little capacitor I think, I don't if is a capacitor or other component is a very little on, is the one that is closest to the middle of the gpu, I will try to replace it and I will tell you if I succes.
So I'm sure you can add to E74 this little things under the GPU.
By the way I check the ANA chip and it looks fine, and the video conector is also fine, the conection is working, other thing in another console with E74 I change the cable for VGA and it works, so if you have E74 that also could be a solution change AV cable but for a VGA one.

Jun 18 2007, 07:39 PM

That are the things giving me the troubles.
First I replace the broken one, and then I get the error E73, then I pull it out and just bridge the points and I get a short and then a 0022 error, so I clean all, and try again putting the little resistor and back to E73, I will check all my connections to see if I'm missing something, but I' now sure that if you get a E74 or E73 after doing a x-clamp replacement or heat gun, you broke one of this two little things, I will now try to put the resistor of a really gone dead mobo that i use to take repairs.
Again sorry for my bad english I hope this info is usefull.

I tried the heat gun method and it worked for some time, as I mentioned earlier.
Then it just started crapping out. Reheat, works for a shorter time and crap out.
I expected as much since I bought it broken to begin with.
As noted in earlier posts, it had the 0102 error.
I did a little research here and there and just decided to jump in whole hog.
I picked up a copper HSF from a 1U server, a TEC and some Arctic Silver Ceramique.
I cut down the HSF and removed the fan. Polished the cuts and put the HS onto the GPU. I had some leftover material from where I cut it down and put those on the exposed memory chips. Additionally, I took 2 copper pennies and sanded them smooth to act as spacers on the HS and the memory chips below the HS.
I opted to not install the TEC at this point just to see if it'd work.
It worked wonders. It's never worked this well in the past. HOURS and HOURS of use on this thing now.
And the best part is that if it ever acts up, I already have the TEC in hand to zap it with ice cold copper.
Total cost, not counting the TEC and Arctic Silver: $30.50 and a bit of patience in sanding copper.

Well after a lot of time in this mobo I finally repair it, I took the missing parts of another mobo, and replace and that do the trick, so now I'm sure and you can add to the E74 error the possibilitty the circuits under the GPU are lose, broke or blow away.
If someone needs info of this error pm me.
As I say before, I think this is the cause of E74 after x-clamps or after reheating.
If you have E74 from the beggining is more probable that is the cable, ana chipset or the AV conector in the mobo.
Hope you understand me english, but I think is getting better with this little practice.

After I bought Forza 2 and put it in my console, it updated my console... After restarting, after the update, i got an 1120 code. I restarted it manually to make sure something didn't screw up and then it worked fine. I Have no clue what it could mean. probably a console update error, maybe?

I know this is going to sound weird as hell and border line insane because I have never seen this happen before EVER. But my friend was showing me his 360 via webcam because he just got it back today and he was excited. So I asked him to sign out so I could help him set up a free gold account that comes with every silver and when he pressed X to sign out and it froze. He then rebooted it and then pressed X again and then this weird screen came up and I shit you not said E405. At first I thought my eyes we playing tricks on me and that it was E45 then the screen started scrolling down what looked like the file listings when booting safemode on a windows pc and then shut off. I couldn't find this anywhere and I wanted to see someones input on the situation.
I know it sounds crazy but it's true he said it said E405 which confirmed my suspicion. he then dropped his camera and hasn't responded
EDIT: He just replied and picked up his damn webcam and his 360 is smoking! He unplugged it. Its internally on fire. Something is seriously wrong here.

Get an installer to do it for you. Got m4x would be my first suggestion but it seems hes been busy with work this past year but look around the forums. Make sure the installers will guarantee success and will replace any part for free in case of an accident. Also make sure they are located near your state and all contact means are in order.

Xbox Woes Cost Microsoft $1 Billion
By JESSICA MINTZ ,AP
Posted: 2007-07-06 01:11:23
SEATTLE (July 6) - In another setback for Microsoft Corp.'s unprofitable entertainment and devices division, the company says it is planning to spend at least $1 billion to repair serious problems with its Xbox 360 video game console.
By Justin Sullivan, Getty Images
Citing "an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles," Microsoft says that customers experiencing hardware failure will now be covered by a three-year warranty.
More Coverage: AOL Games
Microsoft declined to detail the problems that have caused an onslaught of "general hardware failures" in recent months but said Thursday it will extend the warranty on the consoles to three years.
The glitches, and the bad publicity, could weigh the company down as it claws for market share in the highly competitive console market. In May, the Xbox 360 ranked No. 2 in unit sales behind Nintendo 's Wii, but still beat out Sony's Playstation 3, according to data from NPD Group.
"We don't think we've been getting the job done," said Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, which also makes the Zune digital music player, a distant competitor to Apple Inc.'s powerhouse iPod. "In the past few months, we have been having to make Xbox 360 console repairs at a rate too high for our liking."
Bach said the company made some manufacturing and production changes that he expects will reduce Xbox 360 hardware lockups, but he declined to identify the problems or say which others might remain. Microsoft said it will record a charge of up to $1.15 billion for its fourth fiscal quarter, which ended June 30, to cover the additional costs associated with the warranty extension.
The news comes just days before the video game industry descends on Santa Monica, Calif., for its annual E3 conference, and it could overshadow Microsoft's plans to build buzz for holiday season video game releases and "Halo 3," a much-anticipated shoot-'em-up for the Xbox 360 set to launch in September.
The software maker also said Thursday that sales of the game console fell short of expectations for the fiscal year that just ended.
Matt Rosoff, an analyst at the independent research group Directions on Microsoft, estimates that Microsoft's entertainment and devices division has lost more than $6 billion since 2002.
Microsoft has written down larger amounts in the past - more than $10 billion in the late 1990s related to investments in telecommunications companies, and more than $5 billion related to antitrust issues - but a $1 billion write-down for one division in one quarter is significant.
"It suggests the problem is pretty widespread," Rosoff said.
Microsoft will pay for shipping and repairs for three years, worldwide, for consoles that experience hardware failure, which is usually indicated by three flashing red lights on the front of the console, something gamers sometimes refer to as "the red ring of death."
This isn't the first time Microsoft has made changes to the Xbox 360 repair plan. Last December, the company extended the warranty from 90 days to one year for U.S. customers. In Europe, the warranty previously expired after two years.
Microsoft also will reimburse the "small number" of Xbox 360 owners who have paid for shipping and repairs on out-of-warranty consoles, Bach said.
In June, bloggers speculated that the Xbox 360 return problem was getting so severe that the company was running out of "coffins," or special return-shipping boxes Microsoft provides to gamers with dead consoles. "We'll make sure we have plenty of boxes to go back and forth," Bach said in an interview.
Chris Liddell, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said in a conference call that the company sold 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles since the product's November 2005 launch, missing a target for 12 million units by the end of the fiscal year.
Xbox 360 prices range from $299 to $479, depending on their configuration.
Microsoft's entertainment and devices division reported an operating loss of $315 million on $929 million in sales for the three-month period that ended in March. Microsoft has said it expects the division to post a profit in fiscal 2008.
Microsoft announced the warranty extension after markets closed Thursday. Microsoft shares fell 11 cents to $29.88 in extended trading after falling 3 cents to $29.99 in the regular session.

ok now im really knarked. bought my 2nd xbox 360 ( 1st one im still waiting back from microsoft since they said there was a major prob with it 3 months later it still aint back ) on sunday at 4:30pm by monday at 10:10pm the stupid errors came :| Fricken black screen of death.
The errors i got was e74 first then as ive wrote this ive had 2 errors while on the phone to microsoft one was e71 and the e74 and the red lights of doom. i am not impressed or happy cause now i have to take it back to the shop.
Microsoft were highly abrupt on the phone just took me serial number and said to take it back to the store. BUT WHEN YOU LIVE 90+ MILES FROM THE TWATTY STORE YOU CANT EXACTALLY TAKE IT BACK
When he asked me to restart the console i did that and low and behold no lights came on at all except the power bit in the middle and all 4 lights in green on the controler but no error.
Now after 20+ times of resetting it ive finally got it working ( Thank Gawd ) but wonder how long it will be until the crappy errors come back up :|
Has anyone else had this problem with it starting up but no lights on at all and having a black screen on the tv. Its really knarking me.

I have just started getting 0020 randomly. I do beleive its directly caused by overheating. Since i downloaded the flatout demo, after i turn it off, it will give me the 3rlod when i try to turn it back on. If i wait for about 10 mins, it will be fine.
Anyone got any good ideas or should i just try to upgrade the fans?

WEll yesterday afternoon i got E 74. I unpluged the replugged all of my accesories one by one..that didn't help. I used two seperate AV cables from my friends that didn't help. I tried rebooting it like umpteen times....that didn't help

Then i figured, oh great, we got internal problems. So i figured im not going to try to fix it myself cause i haven't voided the warranty yet and I think i can get it fixed for free under the new warranty system even though i bought it last november.
I think its with the GPU or that AV chip thingy.

I dont wanna go as far as the xclamp replacement for my error 20, though im worried i might have to do suttin more than upgrading the fans. I tried the 3 penny fix on a mates and its working great now. Too bad i fixed it literally a week before the new warranty scheme came in.
I thought it was overheating, but when i turned it on this morning after no use since last night, it gave me the lights, and i knew i was in trouble.
But the 3 penny fix it easy, i just havnt got a good torx t8 bit. Mines worn out so i cant get the black screws out. Sucks, have to steal one from work again, which is 2 days away.

I fixed my 0020 Console with the X-Clamp replacement. The Rubber Eraser Mod (pieces of rubber on the RAMs)
3 penny fix
I have looked but can't seem to find a good tut on these can any one help me. I get the error code above and it seems to go away if I revert my dvd back to the original config then update it again it works for about a day but then it gives me the same error again.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

have had my xbox360 since xmas 06 and never had a problem until recent, the red lights of evil came on at first I thought I had four flashing and checked the av wires, etc. then realized only three were flashing, checked the codes against mine and it turns out to be 0102. I think that error is associated with the optical drive cause I tried a maxell cleaning cd to see if it would matter, well im no longer getting the red lights all green but now my xbox360 cant read game and movie cds and only plays audio cds. When I put in a game cd it tells me to put the game in a xbox360... um ok did my using the maxell cleaning cd mess it up or is it part of the red lights error that has caused this? Also I had the nyko intercooler on my console for a few months before the errors started, have since removed it. My system was working fine literally a few days ago and now its kaputz.
