Twister025
Hello, I've recently tried fixing my own xbox360 with an X-Clamp kit I bought on eBay. Originally the console had 3 flashing red lights but now I've brought it down to 2, in sectors 1 and 3. Any advice or assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hey everyone. I posted a few months ago about my e74 1022 error code. after heat gunning the first time it worked for a few weeks then the same codes popped up. did the heat gun again and had it working for 2 1/2 to 3 months but the error came back. I had done the x-clamp fix, installed heatsinks on all exposed chips and bought a new talismoon whisper max case fan hoping it wouldn do this again.

anyway after heat gunning for a third time and lettign cool for several hours i get the 2 left lights indicating that the system is overheating. With normal overheating you can only turn the xbox off by unplugging it but with this I can shut the system down from the power button.

I am all out of ideas now and am thinking of just putting it on ebay and getting a 360 arcade system but was wondering if there is anything else I can do to try to bring it back to life once again. Was considering the heat gun again but I just dont know if I may have fried something this last time around and just have a dead xbox.

thanks all.

Hello im new here and i got some questions for your.

Yesterday i installed the X-Clamp Mod and replaced the old thermal compound with a new one.
But after startup, the console now shows 2 red lights (1/3). The Error is 0011 (CPU overheat). I tightened all the screws at my heatsink but it wont work!

Hi again,

have just repaired another x360 (Error 0102) with Hot Air Gun!!
This box was really dead, no sound and screen only 3 red blinking leds. So I used the same method as I wrote in my last post.

x360 boots now just fine, no problems at the moment. also played 5 hours without stops!! hehe

Would be very interesting if somebody could repeat that and port his results. wink.gif

i kind of can but i went the whole hog and bought a hot air rework station, so far its recovered 6 boxes, 3x error 0020, 1x e74, 1x error 0002 and 1x error 0022,

infact so far ive had only one i couldnt bring back to life, it started as an error 0102 so i reflowed the cpu which seemed to fix it, but after a few hours of play i started to get thousands of coloured dots all over the screen getting gradually larger and more as i played, the game played fine in the background though, i switched off and on and got an e74, so i cracked it open and reflowed the gpu, again it worked for an hour before i got rlod again, this time error 0002, reflowed the southbridge and tried again, it didnt work but the error code changed to 0020, since then ive reflowed all the ram chips and still no joy, its the one bump in my so far perfect record and its annoying the hell out of me, next job will be to reball the cpu and gpu, i wont be beaten by it! even if it costs me more than a new xbox (and its not even my console!)

hey i've been getting e69. it has to do with the hard drive. how the hell do i fix it. i turn on the xbox and it say no profile found. i try again and again and again and it gets e69. try again and then it will work but then freeze in about an hour. when it works i get saved failed. so i cant play rock band or guitar hero. how can i fix it????

I read through the section with E74 relating to possible AV Cable failure or possible GPU, I have a situation in which someone could pinpoint on whether it would be AV or GPU

Turned on the xbox, and got one red ring in the lower-right quadrant with "E74", after looking through microsoft support page and other various forums many have been suggesting unplugging all cables, waiting for a while and re-plugging it back in. On the first try this surprisingly worked, it booted me to the dashboard and seemingly all was well. I put my copy of Lost Planet: Colonies in..and then the next problem occured, the game itself had a graphical glitch, looking like green vertical bands across the screen all throughout the game. I restarted the xbox and just as before the same E74 error message re-appears.

Once again I unplugged and re-plugged it after waiting for an extended period of time and it just won't boot me back to the dashboard once again

I severely hope it isn't GPU, or if anything I'll keep trying out different ways to get my xbox 360 back working, trying to avoid sending it back..if anyone has any suggestions to pinpoint the exact problem and a way to fix it would be GREATLY appreciated

Got that E79 error 1033 now, got the console to boot up once without HDD in (tho I don't think that matters) and I did a inital setup thing and got e71 error.

Not sure what the big issue is but seems its fixable. Perhaps one day someone will nail this sucker of a issue.

Anyone have any suggestions other then talk to MS BS please do help.

Today my Xbox came up with e79 error 1033. I have a new arcade xbox 360 with falcon chip and a 175W PSU, flashed with ixtreme 1,41. Help!!!
theprime
Im almost certain that its related to the software updates you get off new games as I use to get occasional ones but then it slowly increased as update got put on.

There must be a way perhaps with the HDD to force a reload of default settings or something. Does anyone know how to force clear the bios of xbox motherboard memory? This e79 1033 seems to be increasing and I think MS is 100% responsible. This is gotta be pathetic and I will hold off buying a new xbox till there is a solution.
chevellecrazy600
i fixed the 0020 error with overheating of the gpu. put the fan over the cpu to PULL the air away not put cool air into the heatsink. did that for 20 mins or so and let it cool off for like 5 or 10 minutes and no more rrod. no xclamp fix.

E74.

My Xbox 360 has E74.

HDMI Motherboard with latest cpu/gpu heatsinks, a benq...

But it's got E74 >.<

I really think its the scaler chips problem, I heard that using a non microsoft HDMI cable would damage the console, And I think....it may?

Fuck.
XboxMySocks
No, that's a rumor put out by ms so they can make more money....

Anyways, 0020 is a severe GPU solder failure, which means about 5 or more (of its critical) solder pins are flawed in some way, so it's the same error you'd get if you removed the GPU (for a reball or something..) and started the console.
wx360
Hi everybody,
I’ve got my Xbox360 just before a couple of months and it starts showing some error screens, (error code E71 and a flashing red light in the fourth corner of the ring). It just started in the middle of a game (Live match with Lost Planet Colonies) two days ago; the screen froze so I restarted the Xbox and got the error screen for the first time (E71), so I removed the HDD and reattached it again, then I restarted the Xbox, so the error is gone but the screen started to freeze randomly. So I tried again to play without the HDD but it still freezes even on the dashboard.
I tried several times: the error screen came two or three times again, but even when it boots randomly I get a frozen screen after a couple of seconds.
So, any idea about the causes of this problem please? huh.gif
thanks

Hey wx360, i got the same E71 error with freezing but its turned to the 3 RROD. mine was working fine until this last live update. did ur probs happen to happen after this recent update?

Hi,
No, it happened the day before it was released (August, 5th), so I don’t think it’s caused by the recent update.

Just bought a 360 from a friend and it has a 0102 error code which is cool since I only paid $40 for it and it gives me a reason to return to X-S tongue.gif .

So after reading thread after thread on ways to fix it I'm gonna attempt the x-clamp fix along with some heatsinks on the ram and the 12 volt fan mod. So my question is: what size heatsinks do I need for the ram and where can I get them from, also It seems like some of the tuts were written almost a year ago so I was wondering if there were any improvements I should be aware of before I start. Thanks for any info.
djtiesto
damn those xbox360 like to rrod.... pfff tried a few tutorials but didn't fix mine.

Anyway, my x360 is out of warranty (only 2 years here) that's why I tried it myself

I did the x-clamp replacement.

I used 2 different types of thermal paste : OCZ thick thermal paste and Zalman thermal paste (thinner)

The problem I had was that when I played or watched a WMV of MP4 the xbox360 would FREEZE the picture after about 20 minutes, then I have to turn it off -> then on and RROD, after half an hour it works and then again 20 minutes and freeze...

I did the x-clamp tut with the baking and stuff and at exactly the same time around 20minutes it freezes and after the when you turn off and then on RROD ... with secondary error code 0022.

I also tried the 12v mod with extra fans on maximum speed but this doesn't help anything.

I tried the creditcard/phonecard pieces around cpu and gpu but then my xbox360 froze after 5 minutes !!! and then turn on/off RROD with same error code 22.

Could it be the thermal paste ? do you really need special one ? As I use those with good results in my computers. Or is it a soldering / bending problem ?

Thanks for listening !

Thats what I did and now my error code list is an official mirror smile.gif
You can like add new error codes and edit existing ones like add possible fixes with links to tutorials etc.
And there is also like a Repair Guide/ Walkthrough for complete newbies, you enter how many lights it shows etc and it tells you how to fix it...

None of which helped me out, I tried unplugging everything and waiting for my Xbox 360 to cool down then I re-plugged everything back in. Still red light....then I called microsoft and they said I wasn't under their warranty and that it would cost me a pretty penny. So I searched around on google and found this repair guide and it showed me how to take my Xbox 360 apart and repair it. So now we are back in action!

You can find the repair guide here http://xbox360redlighterror.blogspot.com

Well I just replaced both x-clamps with some panhead screws and a few washers and now I'm getting an error 0011, I've tightened the screws down pretty good but not very tight cause I didnt want to screw anything up so I'm thinking about going back and tightening them a little more. Is this safe?

Also I havent bought any thermal compound yet so maybe thats causing it? I wasnt gonna run it without the new thermal compound I just wanted to test it out. And incase it helps this is how I screwed the heatsinks in:

0011 is CPU overheating if you dont replace the thermal compound this always happens...
The setup looks alright to me..

K guys I got a question.
Had a working Xbox 360, BUT the Hitachi 0047DJ drive didn't work.
FYI drive was modded.
Anyway, so I also had a 0078FK drive model, did some researching, saw that it was fine to swap the boards on them and the 0078FK should work.
But now I get 3 red rings, even though I've replaced the original 0047DJ board/drive into the Xbox, and the secondary code is 0021.
I have the original firmware for the drive, do I need to restore that before proceeding?
Can anyone help?
Thanks

Disconnect the dvd-drive, if the error remains, do that -> 0021

Hey everyone,

I hope I'm doing this right, this is my first post. huh.gif

Anyways, I making a new post on my blog about the different tools and stuff you need for the Xclamp trick,
and my questions is,

Can someone tell me everything you need to get it done, from the types of different screwdrivers
and the size of the bolts people use after you take the X clamp off.

I can't find that anywhere, especially the size of the bolts, types of washers and kind of washers.

Thanks,

0101 Is an error with the USB ports, either a broken pin or bridged point on the mobo.

Hi

When i turn my xbox on i get 3 red lights and the power supply blinks red then back to orange.

The code i get is 0001. i rang gameworlddirect they said my power supply is faulty.

Getting a new one will it fix this problem or just be the same? as there is no point buying one if there is a chance it not working still.

Thanks

I have the Elite. It just RROD'd on me. Weird since I played it a few days ago and haven't done anything with it since.

I opened the case, turned it on and put a hairdryer to it for a few seconds until the three red lights changed into two lights (over heating). Then I just waited a few minutes and turned it on, now it's fine. smile.gif

Now we have to see how long it holds before it rrod's again.

(And yeah I couldn't send it back to MS because I have broken the seal when opening it out of curiousity. Wanted to check which drive that was in it. stupid me smile.gif

EDIT: oh forgot to mention which error code I had. I had the 0020.

err I had a problem with my 360 not reading my backups.

It fixed it's self but i noticed during it not booting my backups it flashed the 3rd section I quickly turned it off by the main power. Only the 3rd section. What does this mean? It isn't in the guide.

EDIT: 3rd section as in the 360 is standing vertical. So it would be:

Well, after spending two weeks and nearly wasting a complete Saturday trying to fidget with the CPU heatsink (2 light death), I gave up and bought a new Arcade. I guess I was lucky and because it had a Benq drive and I did not know Lite On's were not flashable. A couple of hours of trying to read it and I finally found the right combination of software and poof, everything came together in 10 minutes.

Then I came across this thread today. I did not know that there are TWO temperature sensors and that the GPU temp sensor can cause a shutdown as well as the CPU sensor. The red herring was that every tweak of the CPU screws made a difference on when the box would shut down. I didn't know that the temperature sensor on the GPU could also cause a shutdown. Well after removing the GPU heatsink, I saw that only about 80% of the die was covered with the new grease I put on and it did not look like the heatsink was making full/tight contact with the GPU die. I was cranking down so hard on the CPU heatsink that I had made a complete impression of the Microsoft lettering in the heatsink.

Current setup: GPU with Xclamp replaced and CPU with original Xclamp, 2 pennies taped to each RAM chip on the bottom of the PCB.

Once I tightened down the GPU heatsink snugly, the 360 booted right up and worked like a charm. I don't expect the old box to last too much longer since few people have made permanent (more than a year) fixes to 3RROD's on release boxes and I'll keep my modded Arcade as a back up.

Thanks XS. These message boards are priceless.

Here is my entertaining Xbox 360 repair adventure.. biggrin.gif

I recently fixed a friends Xbox 360. It was a Xenon machine. Symptoms were not the 3rrod as usual.. It was 2 red lights.. Overheating immediately when turned on. Upon investigating, it turns out that the heatsinks were barely touching both the CPU and GPU. After taking off the heatsinks, you could see how the thermal paste had been bubbling on top of the chips. Cooking it up.. smile.gif Not knowing if it was broken for good, I did a high quality Xclamp fix on both CPU and GPU, using new AS5 paste. After that it booted up fine, and I stressed it for an hour playing GTA4 (is there a better way to stress an XB360?). All was well during that hour, so I figured it was fine and dandy, and I put the machine together..

How wrong was I..

Right after I put it together, I started up GTA4 again. Already at the menus, the fans started to speed up and go crazy. Then it bombed out with overheating. Hmm.. I let it cool for 10-15 minutes, and started it up again, and let it sit in the dashboard for a while. Fans sounded fine, no sign of overheating. I tried to play a bit of Portal (from The Orange Box). Played for 15-20 mins, and no problems at all. I then tried Crackdown, and here the fans were mostly okay, but they eventually speeded up. When they did, I paused the game, and the fans quieted down again. Hmm.. I then tried GTA4 again. Same as before - fans went nuts at the very beginning. I shut it down, and let it cool again. I booted up again, and now it started to overheat in the friggin' DASHBOARD..!! wth..?!

I then got the bright idea to check the error code. It was 0013. I then found this very thread, and saw it could be RAM overheat. I then spent a few hours going through this whole thread. I didn't see anybody had the 0013 error (but maybe I overlooked it?). I then figured maybe some soldering was screwed up in one of the RAM chips or something. I decided to try the heat gun on it. Took it apart, and took off the GPU heatsink (since two of the RAM's are under this thing..). I preheated the board, and then gave it 600° celcius on all the RAM chips, southbridge, scaler chip and GPU. I let it cool down for an hour, and then I did it one more time, and let it cool again. I gave the GPU some fresh AS5 and put the heatsink back on.

Then it ran beautifully! This was on the 30th September. Since then I have been playing GTA4 a few hours at a time, regularly, every day. I hope it stays well, but time will tell (wow, that rhymed..).. tongue.gif

Thanks a lot to this whole thread. Helped me a lot! wub.gif

Only the ring of death is covered for 3 years, just call microsoft and ask, you might get lucky...

If you wanna fix it yourself here is all information that you need, E74 is pretty much the same, your 360 just doesnt recognize it yet...

Ok so I got the no video prob, but no rings, decided to fix myself with xclamp. Accidentally knocked off one of the resistors now I have 3 rrod, (shit) , resistor is R3D4 ( 1 kohm). Checked error code was 0031. Re-soldered resistor rrod gone. still no video. Hopefully someone else can confirm this code. The resistor in my case was completely separated from the board, therefore open cct, not shorted. I've heard shorted resistor under gpu heatsink gives different error, I think I'll focus my attention on the Ana chip for the video error.

Ok i have the E 74 error message. When I have my CD drive connected while the XBOX is on the power button light stays solid. When I have my CD drive disconnected while the XBOX is on the power button keeps on flashing. I have tried the penny trick on the chips. I also tried the hidden secret code and i get 1022.
