Have you or a "Friend" set a Parental Control lock on your 360 Unit, and you are unable to go on Live or play some games? well if you think guessing that little 4 key pass code out is going to be an easy task, try again.
a little bit of simple math will tell you that there are a total of 11,119 different key combinations that you can go through in order to find out the right one.
well this might help you out alittle.. if this doesn't help call Xbox Customer Support
and they may give you the unlocking code. post yours here to help out others.....
My main reason for posting this is because of being put on hold for over 45 minutes.
and I think that no one should have to put up with that kind of "Tech Support service".
Help your fellow gamers out.
Turn off your 360 Unit
Remove all memory devices
restart 360 Unit
go to system blade > Console Settings > System Info
press
left trigger, right trigger, x, y, left bumper, right bumper, up, left bumper, left bumper, x.
This should bring up a menu
Reset System Settings
Resetting your system settings
will return all console settings to
factory defaults. Do you want to
reset to factory defaults?
Yes, reset settings
No, don't reset settings
select to reset settings
your screen should go blank for about 2 seconds
then the language blade should appear that lists several different languages,
select your preferred language
then a blade that says "Xbox 360 Storage Device" should appear
With the options of,
Done
Continue without one
select to Continue without a profile
Then an Initial Setup Complete screen should appear
with the options of,
Family Settings
High Definition Settings
Xbox Dashboard
select Xbox Dashboard
Now turn the system off, insert the Memory Unit or Hard Drive, and turn the system back on.
No more Parental Control lock.

Very nice work, Exthero. This should be added to the 360 FAQ.

Question:
Is that button combo only necessary because the Lock is enabled? I assume so, as when no lock is set the Reset Settings menu item is readily selectable.
I'll fold this into the FAQ later once I can verify (or someone else does, or ts beats me to it..).

Thanks everyone, I had to find this out the hard way, I allowed a friend to use the Unit for the weekend and when he returned it, XBL was locked so i couldn't go on. At first he told me he might have done it, then later he told me it was either his roommate or Girlfriend. (the girlfriend i doubt because it would be a miracle if she even knew how to turn plug in a power cord... put it this way she would have been the lowest scorer on the D.A.B. tests.)

It's only necessary if the control lock was engaged and you dont know the button combination.

The only DAB I know is Digital Audio Broadcasting, but somehow I don't think that's what you ment.
I suppose it could be something about a Dumb ... Blonde But then it wouldn't make sense for her to score "low" because if it were a test of stupidity and she scored low that would make her smart.

OK first is first,
there is a 4 button combo using 10 different keys, you start off by doing this.
xxxx
yyyy
so on and so forth,
that would make 10 different choices, then you change the 4th column to the next button that would give you 9 different combinations, then the 3rd column that would give you 99 then the second that would give you 999 and the 1st that gives you 9,989
so you end up with 11,106 different button combinations.
i was off by 13...

i agree, nothing like a real parent. however, codes aren't always easy to guess ;p also not to knock parents because being one is definitely not easy but, some of them have got to step their game up and learn how to take care of their kids.

count it out and see i do think that it is over 10,000, well what ever it is, it would take days in order to check every one.
my math might be off, I work 3rd shift and i dont have the ability to do math or even think rationally at this point. i work from 11pm to 7am and its 3pm now ive been up since about 12pm yesterday

The button combo isn't working for me... I did all the steps, but it doesn't bring up any menu that says "reset settings."

Could be dependant on your Xbox (S/N, etc.)... haven't tried it, but the OP said he got his code from MS support, so maybe it came unique for his box.
I suppose it's time for me to try it.

UPDATE!!!! IMPORTANT!!!!
So the code wasn't working for me so i decided to call support and after an HOUR conversation with 3 different people, I found the answer. What I had to do was enter the code previously mentioned at the system info screen. THEN immediately afterwards, press DOWN, Y, UP, DOWN. This led me to the reset settings page FINALLY. it was a trip to get this to work, but I got it finally. hope this helps some people.

Ok well for my XBox 360 the reset procedure was the same except the code was:
left trigger, right trigger, x, y, left bumper, right bumper [, right, a, right, up]
with the last 4 being the 4 combo from customer service, which is allegedly based on serial number. I confirmed that this works.
