Cosmo posted this on the hardware forum. This is the top of the line cable for $49.99, 20 bucks cheaper than their normal pricing. The 360 component video and fiber optic audio A/V kit. Just bought mine.

Its actually good for the premium. The optical audio cable replaces the 2 stereo audio cables. And this one is listed as their "best" cable package, the one listed as "better" is the 5 cable video/audio kit.

He mentioned this in a reply, not as a starting post. Just thought it deserved its own thread. Is that ok with you?

cuz some people here don't read the hardware area.

then why spend $50 on just an optical cable?

Sorry, let me explain further. Not only does it have the optical audio, but also the video. Here's a link for you.

I understand what it is, but if you bought a premium, it came with component cables. you'd simply need to go buy an optical cable for audio.

'what we have here, is a failure to comunicate', a great quote that has meaning here.

Perhaps you didn't understand. This is an upgrade to the HD cable that came with the 360, and thats all this post is about. If you want to upgrade your current cables, this is a great deal. This Monster cable kit normally is sold for $69.99 and CompUSA has them for $49.99. And it has the Fiber Optic audio cable connected with it. If your happy with the cables you got, or simply want a fiber optic cable by itself, this post is not for you.

Can you really call Monster cables an upgrade?
Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on them. $50 is definitely over-priced. I might consider buying them if they were about $15, but higher than that no way. If anyone out there see or hear a difference in a blind comparison between "premium" Monster cables and the ones from M$, I'll give you a cookie.

I absolutley can and have used them on previous systems with noticeable difference, so I do have some experience with this product. Whether or not you choose to pay that much is simply up to you, and I do, and with considerable benefit to my gaming experience overall. I would like a chocolate chip cookie please.

I don't get all the flaming here. griffin XXI is just posting a good deal on a hardware item for those interested. Save $20 by buying them @ CompUSA.
Some people report noticeable improvements in image quality with these monster cables (see user reviews on Amazon.com).
Another issue stems from a reportedly poor optical port on the M$ component cables. Some people report that their optical cables do not fit secruly in the port, that it falls out, etc. If you are experiencing this problem and like Monster cables, then this is a good accessory for you. This has its own optical cable and setup, so it is more secure.

I didn't mean to flame anyone here. I was just pointing out that I don't think monster cables are worth the money. I highly doubt anyone could tell the difference in a BLIND comparison. And I know people review them well, but I don't think they are doing a blind comparison. Remember, these are also the same people who write rave reviews for Bose (so I can't really value their opinions). But if you feel the need to buy monster, enjoy yourself.

Hey fellas, picked the cables up last night. After connecting them up, I wasn't able to get audio, just video. I think I need the component video/audio cable instead. I connected the A/V into the 360 first, then the 3 video feeds into the TV, then the optic cable to the back of my receiver. No sound. I tried different audio modes on both the tv and receiver, to no avail. I need your expert help, am I missing something? I have a panasonic bookshelf system with 2 speakers for my receiver and it does have the optic input. Perhaps I'm using the wrong cable kit, due to my system? Not sure, but after last night I'm at the point of returning them for the other kit. Thanks for your help and understanding, I thought I knew what I was doing.

Did you enable Dolby Digital in the audio settings of the 360?
griffin XXI
Feb 2 2006, 04:36 PM
I actually did try that, and I had it on that setting from the beginning. Boy I'm at loss. Cosmo what other ideas do you have, if you don't mind me asking. And thanks for your help.

We are missing something here.

I can't figure what, though, since I don't have the cables in front of me.
HERE is the hook-up guide in .pdf.
-Connect to the 360 A/V port
-Plug the fiber optic mini-jack adapter into the A/V Gamelink jack
-Plug-in the fiber-optic cable to both the Gamelink and the receiver
-Power-up the 360, and set the audio settings to Dolby Digital
-Power-up the receiver, making sure that the receiver is set on the proper digital input.
I wonder if your receiver has some odd setting that is not correct.
I know with mine, I reassigned the digital input from "DBS" to "DVD". So I had to put the receiver on "DVD" to get digital sound.

I think this is a good point. The other steps you listed I did complete. I wouldn't have even thought of changing the digital input to DVD. Very interesting. Did you get any sound when you were on the DBS setting, or only when you changed it to DVD? Thanks for the tip, I will check it out tonight after work. Thank you Cosmo.

Think about this... on my reciever the optical input is assigned to on the CD input of the reciever (I have to be on CD in order to get optical sound). Meaning if your xbox is on the DVD input of your reciever then it may not be routing the optical feed to that input (I hope this is making sense). I could change the optical to feed over to a different input but instead I run my 360 audio through the CD input on my reciever.
oops... what he said ^^

No sound until I had the right component selected.

Also, some receivers have a digital/analog switch for each audio input. Just setting Dolby Digital on your 360 doesn't mean that your receiver is looking for a digitial input.

yep, i was reading the panasonic manual online, and it says under 'changing player's settings', to pull up the audio tab, and make settings to suit your digital connection. here's the options:
1.PCM digital output * up to 48 khz *up to 96khz
2.Digital Audio output * On * Off
3.Dolby Digital *Bitstream *PCM
4.DTS digital surround *PCM *Bitstream
5Dynamic range compression *Off
*ON adjust for clarity even when the volume is low; for late night viewing
i'm thinking number 2 is the key here. not sure about 1, 3 and 4.

You might be right about #2. I'm not sure how to set 3 or 4, it should be explained somewhere in the manual.

Tried the different settings last night, to no avail, still no sound. Thanks for all the help Cosmo. I just returned them and will try getting the other cable kit with the 5 RCA plugs, that I'm sure will still be an upgrade to the original cables. Later.

From that ^^^ it do not look like you reciver have digital input only digital output
#3 and 4 are settings for the digital output

If it has a fiber optic input, I'd say it has digital in.

Great Deal at $50.
Too Bad I already bought them for $70 about a month ago.
The reason I bought them was mostly because I wanted THE BEST out of my 360 even though I already had the HD Kit from MS but Monster ones are a little better.
