@teroenza, run E:\ndts\default.xbe and selectbasic bios
@Jordan121, wrong kernel wouldnt cause that problem.. you can recreate another disk and make sure no files are missing , hotswap and try to reinstall it again..

I read the following in another forum:
QUOTE
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CONNECT XBOX'S HDD BACK TO XBOX BEFORE TURN XBOX OFF. OTHERWISE, THE XBOX'S HDD MAY STAY UNLOCK, WHICH RENDERS IT USELESS FOR YOUR XBOX.
This is true about this tutorial too?

Thanks Alot!!!

I went to wall-mart today and I got my a couple of CD-RWs and spent about 30 minutes from start to finish. I've tryed other softmods, such as the saved game exploit ones, and I'm really happy with this one. I'm currently setting up my spare 60GB hard! Hope it works

Hi,
I was wondering how to change the dual boot options as I selected to have the Default boot xonlinedashconsole when I softmodded my xbox. I do not have xbox live nor will I ever, and so booting to the xbox live settings is just annoying when I open the tray. I would much rather boot to another dash by opening the tray or at least disable it and only boot to unleashx.
Thanks

After much failure with a Dell computer, I was finally able to do a successful hotswap using an older AMD-based HP desktop.
Unfortunately, while running the ndure script, I got the following errors:
cp: /CD/ndure/C/xodash/*.xbe: No such file or directory
cp: /CD/ndure/C/xodash/ernie.xtf: No such file or directory
cp: /CD/ndure/C/xodash/xbox.xtf: No such file or directory
cp: /CD/ndure/C/media/*: No such file or directory
cp: /CD/ndure/C/bios/*: No such file or directory
cp: /CD/ndure/C/*.xbe: No such file or directory
cp: /CD/ndure/E/dash/*: No such file or directory
Considering how fast the ndure install went, I'm guessing that almost none of the required files were actually copied to the xbox hard drive. However, since I don't know which files *were* copied to the xbox, or how this incomplete installation will affect my xbox, I'm now afraid to turn off my computer until I get the problem fixed!
In other words, my unlocked xbox hard drive is still powered up, and connected to the desktop. I have examined the linux CD (which I created using this tutorial), and all of these file are actually there....however, all the files and directories on the linux CD are uppercase, which doesn't match the case used in the script file! Why is this?
Anyway, I am thinking that all I need to do is copy the files manually using the "xbrowser". When I look at post 282 in this thread, there is a quote of Kingroach that says which files need to be moved to do a softmod. It seems to pretty much match my list of failed copy's. Is that all I need to worry about is what is listed in post 282?
By the way, I *did* backup my C first (option 4), and that proceeded without error (and took 10 or so minutes, too, so I am sure that part was successful.)
Please some of you experts out there give me advice on what to do next, which files to manually copy, which files to manually replace, and so on. The idea of using a script to do this automatically was a good one, but the script didn't work for me, so just point me in the direction of the "manual install" tutorial if there is one.
***BIG PROBLEM***
I just checked the CD from within xbrowser, and these "missing" directories show up with question marks before their names, and they show as having a 0 size, and MDate of Jan 1, 1970. For instance, from within xbrowser, the bios folder shows up as "?bios" instead of "\bios".
So I have bigger problems than I thought. I have no idea what is causing this. It looks like I'll have to generate and burn another linux.iso, but I don't know what to do different from last time!

Aug 8 2007, 07:02 AM
*** UPDATE ****
I didn't mention before that the computer I was using had two optical drives (a CD-RW and DVD-ROM as master and slave on the secondary ide channel)....and perhaps that was the problem.
I burned a second copy of the linux.iso, and put this second copy in the other optical drive. At this point, I had two identical copies of the linux cd in my computer, one in the CD-RW (which I had booted from), and one in the DVD-ROM. I quit xbrowser, restarted xbrowser, and reran the ndure script. This time it worked! I also noticed that the files were being copied from the DVD-ROM and not the CD-RW.
Anyway, it's all voodoo. Perhaps the lesson here is to always disconnect all but one optical drive when using this tutorial.

Hello,
I am going to do an install of this tomorrow and I had a question:
Does the Nkpatcher progressive option that forces 480p work well? Will it slow games down that normally only do 480i?
I am using component cables if that helps.

Add another success story to that list!
Just modded last night.
A word of the wise:
If this is your first time doing something like this, take your TIME. Take it from me, a newbie. The more time you take, the more patience you exercise, the less chance of failure because you don't trip missing steps.
I did everything, grounded my chassis, researched all the error codes, practiced a few times removing the IDE cable to figure out how to do it right. Here's what I learned:
You can't do things DIFFERENTLY from the guide based on what you THINK might work. The guide says to boot your PC at the same time as your Xbox and for GOOD reason. The reason for that is because one: Your HDD doesn't STAY unlocked. It's pretty much unlocked as long as it's going to be unlocked, even if you get an Error 12. The other reason is because once your Boot CD loads, you can't hook up a live drive after a few moments. You also can't hook up the IDE while the PC is cooled down because it needs a "Hot" IDE cable. Hence the whole reason it's called "Hotswap" to start with.
I had a lot of trial and error. For example, I stupidly put my Ndure files into a folder CALLED "linuxiso" as a sub folder in the HDM folder, which in turn affected my ISO and prevented me from loading the softmod installer.
I had to reburn my ISO and make sure my Ndure folder was INSIDE the main ISO folder and not in a sub folder inside it.
Also, the Xbox hd is only 10GB. Make sure you CLEAN IT UP before you do this, because the EEPROM back up alone will be basically a mirror image copy of your Xbox HD the way it is before you softmod. So if your HD has 3-5 GB of useless music, videos, saves and god knows what else, you might fail to load some essential pieces of the soft mod because you run out of space midway, and then you'll have to do a restore.
I couldn't install Shadowc because of this, but I'm not too concerned with that as 5960 is basically the last Dash update for Xbox and the only reason for Shadowc is for NK plugins and to prevent a dash being overwritten after an update.
I played Marvel/Capcom 2 last night to try out my newly modded Xbox and now Im in the process of formatting an 80gb HDD for it.
Textbook and the other guy that helped make this possible- You're awesome. This is my first modded system and knowing it was possible because of this incredibly strong community and determination without having to spend a dime makes me feel hopeful that next gen systems aren't doomed from being too complicated for the aftermarket to decipher them and find new ways for us to use them.

I tried it, it worked, except the shadow C, so I figured I'd do a reinstall.
That wiped my C and erased the backup on E for some odd reason.
Then I tried to put it back on with Slayer but apparently the xbox harddrive now died (it's making odd scratching noises, so that's pretty much definitely gone).
Does that mean I can throw it in the bin (I guess so) or is there any way of rescuing it?

OK, I read through as many pages as i could to see if my situation is possible and i couldn't find a solution or a way to do this. it should be possible, i cant imagine it not being possible, but i want to make sure that i get it right before i try it. i will make it simple as to the circumstances and what i want to do, and hopefully you guys can help me.
- I had a 1.0 xbox
- I chipped my box with a xecuter 2.6 CE
- After a while i upgraded to a 200GB hdd - with a G drive
- My chip and xbox mobo fried, rendering all but the hard drive and DVD useless
- The 200GB has a lot of data i cannot afford to lose
- The 200GB is in an UNLOCKED state (thank god for atapwd and TEAMASSEMBLY!!)
- I now have a 1.6 xbox that i would like to softmod
- I dont care about xbox live, i want to mod for XBMC
- I want to use my 200GB in my 1.6 xbox WITHOUT losing the data or partitions
- I would love to use this softmod method
Can I do this without losing my data? if so how? I just need a basic breakdown, if i cant, i will just chip my box, but i would love to use this free method. and if its already been addressed, a link to the post is all thats needed, im good at learning on my own.
oh, and does this mod fully support the G drive?
oh and any other info you need, just ask, i need

First softmod your new xbox. Choose nkpatcher .67 since you will need that for G drive.. get the eeprom.. build an xboxhdm disk containing th eeprom.bin and softmod installer. Install the softmod in your old harddrive.. you wont need to hotswap since its already unlocked.. installing softmod over wont destroy your data ( it just copies some files to c and E drive but doesnt delete anything).. lock the harddrive using the eeprom..

Awesome! thanks kingroach for that quick reply. i thought that was the way to go, just wanted to make sure. i think i am gonna give it a shot later tonight. ill let you guys know how it went.
a few more questions, just to clarify:
- the default dash you want to use goes in E:\dash correct? (if i wanted to use XBMC as my dash, i just put it in there?)
- can i back up my C: drive on my 200GB drive? (that way i can remove the softmod and chip it later if i choose)
i know where to come if i have issues(doubt i will, very thought out tutorial), great support in here.

just delete everything from E:\dash\ folder and copy xbmc files to E:\dash\..
when you install ndure it will autometically backup the C drive to E:\bakup\ folder.. you can also manually backup by using option "4" in the ndure installer.

Hey all,
First off, a big thank you to Textbook for making this guide, a very good intro for anyone new to xbox modding.
While I was modding my xbox, I first chose option 4 to backup the harddrive. On step 2 of backing up, the xbo froze and i had no choice but to try and restart it (I literally gave it 8 hours - fell asleep). When I restarted to try to backup again, I got a whole bunch of read-only/directory does not exist file errors.
Is there any way I can undo what has been done so that i can try again/solve the problems?

I am missing something here, not sure, but i want to use a 160g hard drive i have laying around, i've checked it out and it will be fine to use for the xbox. However i have no idea on the one part about increasing your hd.
How is the heck to i get the eeprom?
I backed up everything and i have searched and have nothing close to it. I even went in and ran e:/ndts/default.xbe(from a search on here) and it had the option to backup eeprom. so i did screen changed said something about 1.1 running, then went back to the main screen?
i know i'm just missing something small here. can ya all help me out? thanks

ok, so i modded my xbox and upgraded the HDD to my 200GB (thanks kingroach for the info!!). I Ran into a few snags, but with determination, i resolved them myself. i will share them here in case anyone else has these problems.
i ran thru the tutorial step by step. i read it 3 times before i attempted. this helped me with the problems i came across. here are some of the problems i came across:
PROBLEM: Hard time unlocking the hard drive for the Hotswap.
FIX: use the method of playing a soundtrack, pausing, then attempting the hotswap
PROBLEM: Stupid dell computer would never recognize the xbox hdd. and when it did, it recognized it in a locked state.
FIX: i hotswapped after i turned on the computer, but before the computer had a chance to read the IDE devices. this has to be done really quickly after the computer is turned on, before the little progress bar fills up.
PROBLEM: Getting the eeprom.bin file
FIX: instead of using ConfigMagic i used evox to generate the eeprom.bin file, it will place itself the root of the evox xbe in a folder named 'backup'
PROBLEM: on my 200GB i had evox installed on the C:\ drive and took up space, so the ndure install failed and resulted in an error 21 when booted
FIX: did the softmod over again and using option 2 instead of option 1, worked like a charm
Hope this helps, this mod sure has helped me, just saved me big bucks and time instead of buying a damn chip

Hi, I hope you can help me.
I softmodded my xbox (5101/5960) yesterday using this tutorial and everything was fine, unleash-x was working okay but since I want to use this box for xbmc I installed that as the default dashboard using the following method:
1. rename the xbe in e:\dash
2. copy the xbmc shortcut xbe file and cfg file into e:\dash
Again everything worked fine, the xbox booted into xbmc with no problems after turning on and off with the power button, but when I came to switch it on today I got error 21. If I start the box with the eject button it goes to the xbox live config screen but as I want to use xbmc that doesn't help me much.
I understood from the tutorial that there was a backup exploit installed that could be activated by saving a CD track to the xbox, unfortunately I can't even play a CD because I only get the xbox live screen, not the full ms dashboard.
My xbox has been asking me to set the clock each time I turn it on, searching the forum it seems that this sometimes causes problems with softmods, is that what has happened here?
I'd be grateful if somebody could answer the following questions:
1. Will I be able to restore the xbox to factory condition (I did backup the c drive), or reinstall the softmod by using the hdd cable swap method? Is the drive unlocked in the xbox live dashboard or during error 21?
2. Is there any point in restoring the softmod? Is the clock reset problem going to wreck it again the next time I unplug the xbox?
kingroach
Sep 5 2007, 04:18 PM
you should be able to boot any boot disk ( like syalers, AID).. Those disk will allow you to ftp into the xbox.. then you can change/replace dash.. Copy all the contents of xbmc folder to E:\dash\..
Ged_33
Sep 5 2007, 05:03 PM
Thanks for the speedy reply, kingroach. I am downloading SlaYers_EvoX_Auto-Installer_v2.7 now (is this what you mean by bootdisc?)
Does that mean that this has nothing to with the clock reset?
Ged_33
Sep 5 2007, 11:01 PM
Update. I tried to use SlaYers_EvoX_Auto-Installer_v2.7 but I couldn't get the disc to boot (I tried writing it to several different types of disc).
Finally I tried xboxhdm again. I got into the drive and deleted the xbmc shortcut and config file, then I renamed xboxdash1.xbe (which is what I had renamed the previous dash to) back to xboxdash.xbe.
After putting the xbox back together it now won't boot at all, it freezes at the big green X screen, before eventually showing error 13. It won't boot to the xbox live dash or run any games anymore either.
I think I may have corrupted the xbox drive so badly that the xbox can't read it. Linux seems to be able to access the drive but it takes a long time to do anything (like read a folder, copy something etc.) Ndure script won't run so I can't restore the backup of C that was made.
Is my xbox dead? Do I throw it in the bin or would a modchip rescue it?
Ged_33
Sep 6 2007, 09:52 PM
I managed to fix my xbox. I think I damaged the original HD when swapping it between the xbox and pc (I kept on getting hard drive ECC error messages when booting with the xboxhdm cd. Unfortunately I didn't have my eeprom.bin saved so I had to build the simple eeprom reader described
here.
After transferring the eeprom I just used a spare drive I had lying around, using xboxhdm to write and lock it.
I've seen it written a few times but it can't hurt to mention it again -
the first thing you should do when messing around with modding your xbox is copy the eeprom.bin somewhere safe. I forgot to do that and the rescue process wasn't easy or quick.

I have a question. I have softmodded my friends xbox with ndure 3.0 and he wants the force progressive option like I have on my softmodded xbox now since he bought hd cables.
1. Do I just select progrssive scan option that I see in e:\ndts?
2. Do I just make iso with force progressive option and within xbrowser select option 2?
3. Do I just have to rebuild c:\ with slayers then reinstall ndure?

im new to this and have a couple of simple questions (i kinda already know the answers) which i would like to ask just to be on the safe side
1. the tutorial mentions an updated backup script but is based on the 3.0 version is this needed with the 3.1 version
2. some options are missing in 3.1 compared to 3.0 im guessing that they are still there but the option of deselecting them has been taken out (nkpatcher .67, shadowc, ndure toolset)
3. if i use "install ndure basic" will i be able to boot to msdash through its .xbe or will it be gone (same with selecting option 2 in ndure script)
4. would i have any need for UDDAE seeing as i will only be going to ms dash from xbmc to change settings (do i even need to leave xbmc to change settings most topics i have read on this have been outdated)
thank you for your help with any of these questions

I Have another question also:
Method 2: You have a 4-pin molex power cable in your PC long enough to reach the Xbox. So you hook up the power cord from the computer into the Xbox hard drive. So therefore, the computer’s power supply is supplying the power to the Xbox hard drive. This way, there is no floating point ground (because the hard drive is connected to the computer’s power supply) and you don’t need the chassis connecting wire.
Is that power cable connected to the Pc hard drive?
Dose it look like this:
http://l.yimg.com/www.flickr.com/images/spaceball.gifIf so then i got that on my computer. Now hooking this up
to my xbox HD,will it prevent electric shock or something?
Also i download the Ndure installer 3.1. Do i need the updated script
for 3.0?Or not?
Other than that,i got everything on disk and ready to boot from my cpu before i do the
hotswap.

Ok, modded as instructed. I guess I messed up somewhere, cuz all I got was an xbox live screen with 3 options, figuring something didnt take, I did the whole procedure again... except for backing up c (since it was done in the previous attempt I didnt do it again). At that time I got the xbox error screen w/o any number in the corner. So after freaking out, I put my demo disc in the box, it booted to the game. Remembering that I could u/l the hd at that time, I hot swapped, again I did not backup c, but I performed option 2 and now I have a modded xbox.
HOWEVER
I cant access my MS DASH, nor have I been able to play a DVD. While hooked up to my component a/v cables I got a mirrored splitscreen, split in the middle - using my standard a/v cables fixed that issue.
How do I get my MS Dash, DVD capability, and restore to factory settings if needed? I'd also like to know how do I load more s/w on the xbox, i.e emulators, XBMC.
Thanks

Ok I modded the xbox a long time ago using this method.
And now I want to upgrade the HDD. All of the HDD upgrade tutorials seem to take for granted that you have a fresh new Xbox.
Anybody please tell how I go from this current modded Xbox, and upgrade the HDD. I want to use purely hotswap methods, no game hacks.. I don't have the required games.
I'm not sure if I have a backed up eeprom or not, I just followed this tutorial when I installed the mod and unleashx, and then XBMC.
