quick question; Is xboxdash.xbe a kernel specific file or does it work regardless of kernel version
It depends on where that xboxdash.xbe came from. It could be a renamed file or the original xboxdash.xbe
or the file from Ndure package, many possibilities
krypto123
Dec 24 2008, 08:45 PM
it's the original xboxdash.xbe from a virgin xbox,
ldotsfan
Dec 25 2008, 03:12 AM
There are different versions of dash files and in fact Ndure softmod originated from trying an early version of the dash (ver 4920) on other kernel versions.

so if i put xboxdash.xbe from a 5838 to a 5130 my xbox will get messed up right?
Heimdall
Dec 26 2008, 12:49 AM
Probably. If you put it on the real C (as opposed to the shadow C) it will definitely break your softmod! Softmods work by using a specific MS dash file from an old dash, renamed to xboxdash.xbe. If you replace it with xboxdash.xbe from any stock MS dash the best you will get is an unmodded Xbox because the exploited fonts won't load........
To answer your original question, xboxdash.xbe isn't kernel specific - but that doesn't mean you can swap them around unless you really know what you are doing.

Hi!
Every time I boot UnleashX from e/apps/ndts via evox apps it kicks me back to the M$ dash.
The ndts folder has a small default.xbe in it that I ftp'd out and unleashx booted from ndts (but doesn't show up in evox apps) but I still don't see shadowc.
I have the original c and e folders from the softmod and eeprombackup.bin from evox and configmagic can i build a bigger HDD with that.
Thanks in advance!

Hi guys. I am hoping someone can help me out. I was installing the ndure 3.1 softmod from this tut and during step 3 of the install I went to stand up and knocked my xbox off the computer and it disconnected the xbox hard drive from the ide cable connected to my motherboard. This was my first time trying to install the exploit from this tut.
Now before the install I tried everything to unlock the hdd. The only way I was able to unlock it was to play a song off of the hd and then pause it and do the hotswap. Every other method had failed numerous times. Well now I have the error 13 code now and I cannot get the hd to unlock at all so I can rebuild the hd with xboxhd. I am frustrated because I finally had it installing before I jumped up like an ape and disconnected any thing. Can anyone help me out with some suggestions? In the meantime I a going to keep trying to unlock the hd. Thanks for any help.

First I want to thank you for such a great job making our old xboxes work like a charm!
Some months ago I followed this great tutorial to softmod my old xbox. Hotswapped and installed ndure 3.1 through xbox hdm. I made an eeprom backup, included it into de boot cd, and swapped the hard drive for a 500gb one. I finally installed xbmc as the main dashboard and everything has gone like a charm.
I decided to get another xbox from eBay to give it to a friend as a present.
I got a very cheap one, with broken dvd and quite dirty. I also got a transparent cover.
This morning I received the xbox and I prepared the ndure dvd for the console kernel, but in the last moment I switched dvds by accident, and I used the wrong one, from the other xbox, with a different kernel.
In ndure dvd I selected option 2, xbrowser, ndure, did the backup of c, and while copying the ndure files, the dvd started making ugly noises and gave a read-error. Damn!
I started xbrowser again and run ndure install, after cleaning the dvd (and I didn't notice it was the wrong one, fool of me!!) without rebooting, and this time the process finished ok.
As the xbox didn't boot properly, I restarted from the dvd and recovered original msdash, deleting everything in c, and copying manually all files from e/backup.
Luckily the msdash started again and I even changed the date and time with no apparent problems.
Then, when I wanted to start again I noticed I had been using the wrong dvd.
This time I used the right dvd with kernel 4034. All the process went ok, and I switched back the hd into the xbox.
Now something very strange has happened. It is something like a weird output problem.
After the mslogo boot screen it loads unleash-x, but the audio and video are constantly "blinking". I can't read anything, because the image just appears for a short instant and then goes off repeatedly, and the audio is also affected by this pulsating behaviour.
I can connect to the ftp without problems, but I can't do nothing else.
If I insert an original game, after the mslogo, I get the same pulsating issues.
I have tried AID 4.X, but with same results, I can't read any text, so I can't enter the menus...
Can someone figure out what has happended with my xbox?
Can I backup my eeprom and start from scratch with a bigger hd? How?
Any help please, I'm stuck here
carminuja
Feb 7 2009, 10:08 AM
I solved it!
I copied evox to e:/apps using ftp, and run it from the broken unleashx.
When I started evox, the screen came back to normality. I managed to backup eeprom, and then installed xbmc as the main dash.
I don't know what happened that corrupted the unleashx dashboard, but everything is working fine now!
I can't wait to see xbmc running on xbox360 or ps3.
It will not be too long until somebody here will crack them.
Thanks again for such a great forum.

Depends which softmod you used in the first place!
For Krayzie you need E:\Dashboard\, for Kingroach you need E:\Dash\
Make sure you bypass shadow C before taking the copy of your C partition, otherwise your new disk won't be softmodded.
hairy_testicles
Feb 28 2009, 03:29 PM
i used ndure 3.1, and xboxhdm 1.9 to softmod it in the first place, hence the reply in this thread.

how do i bypass shadow C? default.xbe, as stated in the tutorial on the first page of this thread?
Heimdall
Feb 28 2009, 03:38 PM
You're assuming that everyone is as logical as you are.... I was just covering the option that you might not be so logical, and might have posted in the wrong place!!!
You need E:\Dash\, thinking about it you also need E:\NKP11\ in case you've added a manual video.bin / fan.bin / led.bin. Adding E:\ndts\ is a good idea but not essential so long a you copy it across from your backup.
You bypass shadow C by running E:\ndts\default.xbe.

I had the same exact same problem after performing this mod on the 4304 dash. This is how I fixed it:
1. obtained the 5960 dash and related files from an extracted slayers disc.
2. create a xboxhdm bootable disc using these C:\ files.
3. restore the hd by hotswapping into xboxhdm. (I had to unlock the drive using one of the error codes, the one where you unplug the dvd drive's ide cable.)
4. re-hotswap and mod the drive as detailed in the original post.
5. (optional) upgrade the hard drive as described several posts above
Ive also got a 4304 kernel and dash, can you tell me where i can find the details for part 4?
Ive currenlty got error 21 (i believe this is because the slayer disk uses version 5960 instead of the original 4304) Did you have to upgrade to 5960 using a live CD or something?

hi there, wicked tutorial, 3 years and going strong

i have a prob, i have bios 5838. The softmod said it was successful. When I start up the box with any bootdisk or no disk it just stops on the logo screen, "after it says microsoft in white".
question is, i read that you need to use the pause track trick on my bios number, I didnt use this, but xbrowser displayed the files so does that mean in my case I dont need to use the pause trick? I was thinking that may have been my problem. other than that Im not sure what to do. My second question is, does this method install unleashed.... or do i need to install that part seperatly?
hope someone can hlp

@Prestigex. If you can't get the original disk to boot (so you can run Config Magic or
xman954's eeprom dumper to get the eeprom), then you'll need to build an
eeprom reader, or fit a chip.
@palentir. If xbrowser allowed you to view the contents of the disk and copy files across then the hotswap worked, but it sounds as though you didn't copy the right files across, or your dash was an old version. Follow the method described in
this post (make sure you select kernel 5838 when you build the Kingroach files), then hotswap again. You'll probably have to unplug the DVD drive to force error 12, and hotswap between the white Microsoft logo and the error.

thankyou heimdall, really greatful you answered back so fast. I have been sorting it out since. I tried your suggested method but that didn't seem to fix it at first. But you were exactly right when you said it seems the right files arnt copying across. the problem was the ntpatcher options in edure. The new version 3.1 is different from the origonal post screenshot, so i went back and had another look. removed some of the checks under ntpatcher (leaving only one for msdash) and that did the trick.. When I had the problem, i had an error message saying cannot find files in 2 folders, one was called: \bios\* etc, but now it doesnt say that. it also says copying backup to shadow-s, which it didnt before. and i think that was the problem. Just thought I'd post here incase anyone else gets same issue.

I know this is old but Im hoping someone will still read it. I have followed the directions all the way through the part after the hotswap and you enter "xbrowser" into the console. After entering the xbrowser, I see the same things that are in the picture shown in the tutorial, but when I try to back up the C drive, I get "No such file or directory, press any key to continue" Also, should be able to move through the directories in the right half of that screen? I can only move through things on the left side of the screen. Every time I enter a number that I believe should be corresponding to an option I get the "no such file...etc" message.
Anyone know whats going on?

once your FTP drops on your softmod you are screwed.
I should know. It cut out on me during transfer. I now have to hard mod a box because of a bad softmod and my silly ass unlocking the drive.either way, the hard mod was coming.

Just like to thank textbook for this great writeup. I used it in combination with the hotswapping method to get my xbox softmodded. Everything went well... after i found a computer that had IDE channels on it and would cooperate.
I used the "copy song to disk, play song, pause song" method to unlock the disc (my timing sucked and i could not get an error 12).
Once i did that everything worked fine and the install using ndrue 3.1 worked.
I have XBMC installed as an App right now and am probably going to leave it that way. I am also going to mess around with different skins for the unleash X screen as I am not a huge fan of the default.

If it boots into the M$dash, both with power and eject button turnon, than the mod probably isn't working.
Another indication of a working softmod are the eject button leds.
If they flash green and come steady green during boot, there very likely is no softmod.
If it turns into orange, your softmod is coming up.
If your xbox comes up into the clock setting screen, simply set the clock and press the A button. After that, perform an IGR (Left Thumb + Right Thumb + Back + Black simultanously)

Ok so far this is what I have achieved with this softmod.
Softmodded xbox original hdd and got the eeprom and pass from it.
I had issues with the install. Cannot copy my game discs for one. Unleash dash works after ndure retail setup.
I decided to make a new hdd from a 40 gig I have lying about. (western digital WD400B)
Created xboxhdm with retail msdash and installed on 40gig hdd. Locked drive, put it into xbox and booted
to msdash with no problems. Just like new.
I then used my ndure disc and installed the softmod onto new drive.
Booted to unleashx and it wasnt the nice blue rotating logo but a green menu that looks rather plain.
Used file explorer and ran E:\ndts\default.xbe and got the red menu (Ndure toolset??). I chose 'install menu'
then 'ndure retail'. Files are installing then it gets to 'settings_adoc.xip' and hangs for 40 seconds, next it comes
up with an error. Ndure Basic install gets stuck as well.
ERROR
An error occured while extracting 'r'.
Error Code: 3
Log file shows
Begin extracting "E:\ndts\files\C\shadowc.rar"
Urar FAILED "resc\default.xbe". Error Code: 3

I have remade the ndure disc 3 times and burnt off onto 2 cdrw's and one cd-r from 2 different DVD burners.
Another error or failure I get is.
Batch process failed.
The last item was:.
Action:rename
MSDash also boots to and gets stuck on xbox live menu after trying to install ndure.
I have also downloaded Slayers 2.7, Auto Installer Deluxe 4.5.
Ill keep trying Im bound to get it right somehow.

I then used my ndure disc and installed the softmod onto new drive.
Until there, you are fine. What version is your xbox? What version of ndure softmod did you use?
If your softmod is working (going to the Unleashx dashboard), than you don't need the NDTS.
The Unleashx dashboard is a program like any other xbox program. If it doesn't show up properly, it can be due to it's skin missing or due to it's settings. You might try a couple of other programs / games and see if those display correctly. Doing so, you can pinpoint the problem to Unleashx or the softmod.
In the ndure setup, you can choose if you want the M$dash or Xbox live dash when you boot with the eject button. You can switch between them by adding a file to the e: or e:\nkp11 folder.
To be able to select the M$dash from within your Unleashx, you will need to ftp the stock M$dash files to your xbox shadow c partition.
How is your xbox connected to your TV/monitor? If you have a NTSC xbox and if you use a HD pack, you can have strange colors due to the nkpatcher vga patch. In that case, you will need to turn that off. Try a composite video cable connection to see if that gives you another picture.

My xbox is V1.3, Kernel 5101 and Dash 5960
I used Ndure 3.1 and xboxhdm 1.9
I have so far created the following iso's
xboxhdm 1.9 with Ndure 3.1 (missing files on install and errors)
xboxhdm 1.9 with MSDash copied from Slayer's 2.7 for setting xbox back to its original state. Works
xboxhdm 1.9 backup of my original xbox hdd with softmod installed.
After installing the softmod originally I did not get the nice blue unleashx with rotating logo. I had the red unleashx menu. I had to install the NDURE RETAIL to get the nice dash to work. There have been copying issues.
Ive just completed another install with the same errors as my previous post.
Installing Ndure I get errors with missing files which were not created by Ndure 3.1 for some reason when setting up for 'xboxhdm install' ticked.

There are lots of ways of using xboxhdm, and lots of options. It sounds as though you're not using the best options for building a new disk. Try this method:
Make sure that on your PC you have the following files easily to hand:
- the stock 5960 C dash files and folders from Slayers:SYSTEM\All\c\, or AID:Files\Dash\ms-c.zip, or CASH:\StockFiles\c\.
- a new set of Kingroach NDURE 3.1 C and E folders. Make these by running Kingroach NDURE 3.1 and simply selecting your Kernel version under "Kernel Selection" and "Create XBOXHDM Installer" - leave all other options at default.
Build your xboxhdm disc using the stock C from Slayers / AID, and the Kingroach NDURE 3.1 files you just made. Put the stock C in linux/C. Rename ndure.htm to ndure (no extension), and place it and the rest of the Kingroach 3.1 files in linux/ndure/, i.e. the Kingroach C and E directories should be in linux/ndure/C/ and linux/ndure/E/, with the ndure script named linux/ndure/ndure. Put eeprom.bin in /linux/eeprom/
Boot with xboxhdm, select option 1 - boot VGA Console, then type xboxhd, then select option 1 - Build A New Xbox HD from scratch. Once that has finished exit, then type xbrowser, run the ndure script, then select Option 1 - Install Ndure [Install only ndure files]. Exit the ndure script. Reboot the PC, select option 4 and type lockhd -a to lock the disk. Put the disk back in your Xbox, and boot.
If you want to change any of the options (like which dash loads when you boot with the eject button), you can adjust the softmod by running "Ndure Toolset" from the System Menu, or by running E:\ndts\default.xbe from UnleashX File Manager.

Hi again.
Thanks Heimdall, one of my burnt discs is exactly how you explained for a clean setup. Im not touching my original hdd
as i have restored it back to normal and its packed away for safe keeping.
After putting a bigger hdd in my xbox and installing AID 4.5 with all the apps and stuff, all seemed to work ok.
I can boot the MSDash by pressing eject etc. Games play nicely like they should from both boot options. MSDash or Unleashx 'launch dvd'.
So after nearly a week of playing games and messing with the emulators (fun stuff) I decide to watch a DVD movie.
MSDash boots then will only go to a black screen when trying to play movies with a weird seek sound. Launch DVD option in unleashx does
the same thing. XBMC will not play movies unless i browse the dvd and run it manually. Very annoying especially for my wife.
Any ideas how to fix this.
Refer to previous post as to what I have already done to my xbox.

It has a telnet daemon but I don't know if it really works as my testing PC doesn't have a compatible NIC that the kernel will recognize, in theory with network connectivity you can then interact with the xboxhdm prompt over a telnet connection.
I think you are better off exploring the other options.
