I'm having problems with hotswapping the drive over, I follow the tutorial as guided, I have disconnected all USB devices, my ethernet cable is connected, but everytime I make the swap and press 1 it scrolls down, mentions someting about bh with no client!? twice and hangs after the ethernet test. Then it moves on after a timeout I think, and it asks to type xbrowser, I do an it says:
NO PARTITION TABLE FOUND ON /DEV/HDA
What am I doing wrong?

Well, I've tried everything, yes I was making a few mistakes, which I believe I have now corrected, but I still get that message, and also when I press 1 after the hotswap, it goes into linux, and the diagnostic screen scrolls down, picks up my hard drive from the xbox, etc and then reads this error:
hda: read_inter:error=0x04 {drive status error}
It says this error about 40 times and then continues.
I am using my old xbox which I badly flashed my X2 with last year, I have disabled the X2 mod, and to all intents and purposes it is functioning as a standard Xbox, bar I'm using a locked Maxtor 160GB hard drive, would this be a problem?
It also hangs for quite some time while checking the ethernet connection, which I've never set up with this xbox but its just sitting in the back of it.
Thank you to any wise owl who can help me with this, its really starting to do me bloody head in.
Thanks again.

@Kimota, if your X2 is functioning, unlock the hard drive using Config Magic and then you wouldn't even have to do the hotswap. But, I'm guessing you're looking at this tutorial because your chip isn't working. The problems you're getting are because the hard drive is locked. Take a look at the FAQ, it has all the possible ways to unlock your hard drive. Playing the audio track, pausing it, and then hotswapping seems to be the most compatible. If you can't get it working, try with another computer. I'm pretty sure all your problems are coming down to the unlocking.

This is weird. Cio mentions many suggestions and possible reasons for problems with XboxHDM. These are listed in the FAQ. If all else fails, I would suggest creating a Safe-Mode XboxHDM. There's a link to that thread in the FAQ along with Cio's recommendations.

Hmm.. all you need is the hard drive unlocked.
TRY THIS ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE EEPROMHopefully, Config Magic was used to lock your hard drive. Try this...
1. Plug your Xbox hard drive straight into your computer like it was a computer's hard drive
2. Boot up XboxHDM and choose option 4
3. When you get the flashing A:\ , type "ATAPWD" without the quotes
4. Select your drive from the menu (top is Primary Master)
5. Select Security Command Set, Unlock With Master Password
6. Type "TEAMASSEMBLY" in ALL CAPS without the quotes
If that doesn't work, then you didn't use ConfigMagic to lock your drive, and this didn't work
If it does work, continue on...
7. Again, choose your drive, Security Command Set
8. Disable With Master Password
9. Type "TEAMASSEMBLY" in ALL CAPS without the quotes
If it works, then your hard drive is now unlocked and will remain that way until you manually relock it again. Now, there is no need to hotswap your drive at all, and the drive can be hooked up to your computer directly. Of course, this means you will have to relock your drive using your EEPROM.

Here's an alternative method, that can be used successfully by anyone* and unlike kingroach's and this thread's 1st posts it guarantees* that Ndure 3.0 with MS 5960 dual-boot gets installed properly:http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act...dpost&p=3395658(

For those of you that don't want your bios to skip you cd-rom if there is a cd-r in it, just it esc when it tells you to hit F1 for setup, it should say something about boot selection. Now go to the cd-rom drive of your choice and hit enter and it should boot from that drive. Ive done this on 8 different brands of bios and mobo and it works on all of them...

That doesnt really answer my question. I mean if i just softmod these (unlocked) drives now, will they work fine if i swap them into otherwise unmodded boxes?

No matter what you will need to get the eeprom from each of the original hdds so that you can use them. Without the eeprom.bin for the xbox, it will not work... Unless you have a modchip i think. I have a 40gb hdd ready to go. All i need is the eeprom from my current hdd and i can swap drives.
Burned_Alive
May 13 2006, 11:37 AM
Can you explain why?
Im failing to see why you would need the eeprom from the system as you cannot get the eeprom until the system has been modified, so that would create a catch 22 situation. Also the guide doesnt mention re-locking the hard drive at any point, so it wouldnt be for that.

5-min later. It works. I even get an f: drive...

Im sorry but you dont really sound like you know what you're talking about, surely you only need the eeprom if the hard drive is locked?
The eeprom only stores the hard drive lock code (in relation to the hard drive), so if the hard drive is already unlocked it shouldnt matter and therefore an unlocked stock drive from a different system should be fine?

Dell solution that didn't work.
Reading back, I saw a few others mention that they couldn't hotswap with their Dells, which might explain my problem. After the hotswap, it doesn't see the xbox drive. I've tried it about 5 times, each time copying, playing, then pausing an audio track to ensure the unlocking. I'll tell you what I tried, in case it helps someone come up with a solution for the problem. I have access to 3 desktops and they are all Dells, so if there is no fix, I can't softmod.
I have a USB to IDE converter that has it's own power adapter with a power molex. My thought was that I'd power up the drive independent of both the Xbox and the PC. So I start Xbox, do the copy, play, and pause to unlock the drive, then disconnect the IDE cable from the Xbox drive and connect it to the primary master of the PC. I was thinking that it seems like the PC needs to see the drive at boot, so I would give it the unlocked drive at boot, but I would hit F12 to get the boot options to boot from the CD. It seemed to work...when Xboxhdm started, I saw in the Linux scrolling by that it found the hda, but it was saying something about errors. When I made it to the prompt, xboxhd responded saying the drive was locked. Something about booting it must have reset the lock, even though it remained powered up the whole time. I hot swapped it back into Xbox and resumed playing the paused track to see if I toasted the drive and it brought up an error screen. I power cycled, though, and it came back and resumed playing where it left off, so it SEEMS to be okay.
Does this give anyone ideas for something that might work?

You may endup having to do like i did. Load up windows and get Xplorer360. Unplug everything from your secondary IDE while in windows... Don't touch the power cables at all... boot up your Xbox and do the music thing. Hot swap it to the Secondary ide cable. Go to Control Panel => System => Device Manager => click on something then on the scan for hardware changes. click on diskdrives and you should see a new hdd on the list. Run Xplorer360 and hit File => Open => Hdd or Memory card. It should saysomethging about not finding a Fatx device at the offset. Yet there should be 5 partions listed in the left hand side. If so, your in. Now follow these instructions and your softmoded.
QUOTE(kingroach @ May 12 2006, 08:58 AM)

heres files to copy ( follow step by step to be safe):
from "E" folder, copy "dash" and "ndts" folder to partition 4 ( just drag and drop in partition 4)
now, in partition 3, delete settings_adoc.xip file from xboxdashdata.185ead00 folder
copy "bios" and "media" folder to partition 3 from "C" folder
copy earnie.xtf to partition3\xodash folder from your C:\xodash\ folder
copy xbox.xtf to partition3\xodash folder from your C:\xodash\ folder
copy x2onlinedash.xbe and x0nlinedash.xbe to partition3\xodash folder from your C:\xodash\ folder
copy xb0xdash.xbe to partition 3 root from "C"
delete xboxdash.xbe from partition 3 root and copy xboxdash.xbe from "C" root to partition3 root
now copy shadowc folder to partition 3 root.
reboot the xbox and it shoudl be modded.
For a dash, get UnleashedX and burn Config.xml, Default.xbe and English.xml to a Cd-rw. Then boot it, put the Cd-r/w into the drive then boot it with the power button. then you just restart the xbox with the power button and you have a dash and a fully mnoded Xbox.

basically when your hd is working, boot it, and run evox's backup feature, then ftp in and grab the eeprom.bin file from the backup folder where ever the evox.xbe is.
create a xboxhdm disk with the eeprom.bin, and either your hacked files or an orginal dash.
boot the xboxhdm disk, and the new xbox hd in a pc.
run option 2 - then at prompt type xboxhd. then select create disk from scratch, type yes at all prompts.
then when it is done, press 8 to return to prompt, and type reboot.
next boot into option 3, and at prompt type lockhd -a
then hit y and enter to confirm.
this should return you to a prompt, stating that your hd is locked, type poweroff, remove the drive from pc, and place in xbox, should boot fine.

Firstly, thank you Textbox for this guide. You're awesome! I hope you get through your problems at college ok.
Now on to my problems.
K: 5713
D: 5659
I used the guide and it worked mostly. I encountered two problems during the procedure.
- received the error on copy - file is a directory (185ead00) as previeous discussed
- Does/will this cause a problem?
- during phase 2, I had several errors - no such file or directory. I tracked it down to the ndure script. It expected the directories xboxhdm/linux/ndure/[c & d] to be capitalized. Mine wasn't. So I renamed the directories to all uppercase and it worked!
After the procedure, I have a couple of problems.
- whenever the XBox is booted using the Eject button I get an error 21. I see that others have had this problem. When I load the ndure toolset (e:/ndts/default.xbe), the root listing of the c: drive are as follows
- dir - Audio
- dir - bios
- dir - fonts
- dir - media
- dir - shadowc
- dir - xboxdashdata.17cdc100
- dir - xboxdashdata.17F14D00
- dir - xodash
- file - xb0xdash.xbe
- file - xboxdash.xbe
Does the error 21 mean that drive c: is corrupt? If I just ftp the contents of drive c: from Slayer's disk to the XBox will this fix the error? I also assume that this will update the Dash to 5960. Is there anything else I should do for this problem?
- Launch DVD doesn't work; at least what I think it should do. If I put a DVD movie in the drive, and press Launch DVD, nothing happens. Is that what it is for? OK- I just put in a game and used this menu. That works. So how can I play a movie? It worked before the modding. FYI - I have a 3rd party remote, not an official MS Xbox remote.
- When I select MSDASH an error pops up "Unable to load c:\xboxdash.xbe. Should I copy xboxdash.xbe to the shadow c? What other files should be there?
- There aren't any sound effects for unleash X when the xbox is first booted, but when using e:\ndts\defualt.xbe there are sound effects? Did something not get setup correctly or copied?
- Should there be any preinstalled Apps? That menu selection is empty.
- Shadow C is unwritable. There seams to be 2 solutions from this thread:
- check to see if shadowc.img is read only and set the attribute as writeable. I'm a little confuse about this. If I ftp the file over to my computer (I'm using filezilla) wouldn't it be writable; i.e. do the file attributes transfer as well?
- Overwrite the shadowc.img and filler1.img with a copy from the hdxdm disc. What is filler1.img used for?
Which is the better solution?
I can put in a game and run it from a cold boot and launch it from Unleash X dashboard.
Now for some n00b questions. Offtopic, of course.
- Is there a manual for UnleashX?
- Evox has been mentioned. Should it have been installed automatically. Do I need to install it via the ndure toolset?
- Is there a manual for the ndure toolset?
Currently, I'm reading through the
ndure installer for the pc thread. Hopefully this thread will answer some of my questions.
Again, thanks for the great tutorial. Obviously, this is my first mod for the xbox.

Get everything ready, close together. Plug av cable into SCART connection, no need to connect to TV. Before powering up the xbox pull the power to the DVD Drive in the xbox. Now power on the xbox and get ready to swap, swap at the first notice of the red led. Works for me every time. Hope it works for you!

What is wrong with my setup? It works fine, except if i choose MS Dashboard if just reloads Unleashx again, so, is there a reason? I'll do it if there is a good reason.
