Just wondering did anyone successfully hotswap softmod with xboxhdm in a DELL in the end. I've read the whole thread and can't see a definitive answer. ie someone may have figured it out and managed it in the end but never posted back in the thread, "Hey I hotswapped with my DELL after all!!"
I've 2 PC's and both are Dells. Don't want to risk messing up my main MCE XPS and my 8200 with xboxhdm isn't detecting the xbox HDD.
I really don't want to have to buy an xbox memory card, a game I don't want and hack an xbox joypad and a usb cable to do the kraysie game exploit soft mod if I don't have to. Should I give up and go the modchip route. Which one?

@GoVegan, you can download the latest nkpatcher from
www.esnips.com/web/xman954/
download the nkpatcher with "KB" in filename. All settings are done for ndure installer, just change your fan speed in config file and compile.
@Calibos, if you use dell then make sure you connect the xbox hard drive to the cable that is normally used inside dell to connect primary master. I have seen if I use any other cable other than the cable that is usually connect to PC hard drive then xboxhdm doesnt recognize the disk..

get NKPatcher11_U03_vga10_KB.rar . All packages are same, only difference is VGA patch for running xbox through vga cable.

So its not that Dells can't be used to do the mod per se, just that they are more particular about what cable the xbox HD is connected to. Looks like I must be doing something else wrong then because I was using the Primary master IDE that I had disconnected from the Dells HDD.
I guess its worth another try then on my Dell.
Thanks for your help Kingroach.

YEAH it worked, I only changed the fan line:
%define FAN_SPEED 10 ; (it was 35)
and compiled it with
nasm -o default.xbe xboxapp.asm
xbedump default.xbe -habibi
renamed out.xbe to bios.xbe and placed it in /C/bios/
it now stays on 20%

I borrowed my friends xbox dvd drive to update my dash so I could preform the softmod. The xbox works fine with the dvd rom plugged in but I have to give it back to my friend. Unfortunatly I get error 11 with no drive. I tried using a regular dvd-rom drive but got error 7. How can I be boot my xbox?

if you boot to ms dash with power button.. then go to ms dash settings and update the time.. restart xbox and it should boot to unleashx.

ok. i have several questions in a moment. a couple years ago (?), i used the "xboxhdm with uxe" method (i still have the boot cd). all went well with that. but ive heard that the the old xboxhdm and uxe soft mod are outdated. so i wanted to use the newer "ndure through xboxhdm" method. so.....can i use the ndure softmod following the old "xboxhdm with uxe" method? when i used the "xboxhdm with uxe" method, i remember just plugging in the pc's ide cable into the xbox hard drive. i also remember unlocking and locking the hard drive using xboxhdm and the eeprom. the procedure seems different using the "ndure through xboxhdm" method. am i confused about something here? i sure feel confused.
also, what about the dashboard? where is it again? in the C folder somewhere using the "ndure through xboxhdm" method? the E folder (looking at the iso i made) shows nothing, and i thought that is where the dash is located. or do i have to thow a dash into the E folder during the softmodding, etc process?
sorry if i dont make a whole lot of sense here; its been awhile. maybe the answers are all on this page somehwere, but the search function never works for me. hmmm.
thanks in advance.

since my xbox dvdrom is broken can I boot the xbox without a dvdrom? Right now I get an error code 11 when I turn it on. I tried using a regular dvd rom drive but I still get an error. Is there a work around?

@eternallypuzzled, the process is nearly identical.
Only difference is instead of typing "softmod" you type "xbrowser" and then launch the ndure script. If you are confused and feel more comfortable using UXE, you can still use it. The advantages of Ndure over UXE for the end user are minimal.
@myprim8, all softmods require the DVD-ROM. The only way to run an Xbox without a DVD-ROM is if you have a modchip.

so....i can use the "xboxhdm with ndure method" just like i was using the "xboxhdm with uxe method", except i use xbrowser to begin the actual modding process, huh? alright, ill give it a go. but will i already have the dashboard? or do i have to slap one in the E folder using xbrowser?

since you already have a softmod installed, you can just run evox and use backup option to backup the eeprom. Also hotswapping isnt necessery.. you can ftp the files generated by ndure installer. All ndure files and dash is located in xboxhdm\ndure\ ( C & E folder)..

maybe you should have called it xboxhdm for SUPER dummies instead. so..i can actually softmod then slap in evox via ftp or whatever. hmm. ok. so i connect the xbox to the tv and evox will pop up so i can back up the eeprom, right? hmmmm. i thought i needed the eeprom to lock the drive so i can ACTUALLY USE the xbox. see?
edit here

let me get this right:
boot up.
unlock using tool.
set master password on floppy.
xbrowser--->softmod.
lock using master password stored on floppy.
good to go?
and in the future (whenever) i store an eeprom on the drive?
is this the right sequence of steps?

Answering my own post here! thanks to Kingroachs encouragement, I gave hotswapping a try again with my Dell and got it to work. So it can deffor be done on a dell.
What I did was left my Dell HDD connected to the Primary master while xboxhdm booted to the main screen. I found by using xboxhdm option4 DOS atapwd when my xbox HDD unlocked. Was after white microsoft appeared under the big X. So......get to xboxhdm main screen with DELL HDD attached to primary master ide. Hotwap at point above. Disconnect DELL HDD and connect ide to unlocked xbox HDD. Click option 1 in xboxhdm, type xbrowser and now it found my xbox HDD and ndure installation proceeded. I got the out of space error but unleashX and xbmc are working. Just have to bookmark my network shares now and set xbmc to boot as dash instead of app.
Thanks all!

I just softmodded my xbox successfully using this guide. It would boot directly to the Unleash dash. I ftp'd the xbmc to e:\apps. It would run fine from the Unleash menu. I wanted it to be the default dash, so I simply deleted the old files in e:\dash and put the xbmc shortcut in there (renamed default....etc). The only problem is the shortcut linked to the wrong place due to a typo in the target (in the config file). Now the xbox boots into a modded state (I can see the xbmc background for a half a second and orange light) then to an "xbox live" setup dash that I cannot exit out of. FTP is not working, so how can I fix. Do I use xbrowser somehow, or a boot disc maybe. I only need to correct the shortcut xbe or somehow copy and paste a dash from one of the e:\apps\ folders. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also when I boot from the eject button i get an error 21. I guess that I need to do another hotswap and clean out the application's directory? Right in the FAQ:
Q: Softmod went fine, but I can't change my video settings using the MS Dash. They change fine, but after I reboot, they go back to normal. WTF?A: This is caused by a safety protection called Virtual EEPROM. In order to make your settings "stick" do this.
QUOTE
1. Create a file in the root of the E:/ drive and title it "EEPROM_off.bin" without the quotes. It can be any size.
2. After creating the file, manually reboot your Xbox by powering it off then back on by using the power button.
3. When the softmod loads back up, there will be no virtual EEPROM protection, so you can change your video settings and they should stick from now on.

Okay, so I soft modded my box with ndure using this tutorial. Then I upgraded the hard drive, using this tutorial again, to a 320 GB WD. Now I have the famous "only reading 137 GB" problem. According to what I have read, I shouldn't have that problem with the install I did but alas, there it is. I've searched and anything I can find is either for people who have chips or they tell me that with ndure 3.0 I shouldn't have any problems. Any suggestions?

Greets all...
Ok so I did the Ndure/xboxhdm softmod using Textbooks tut, and booting via eject I get the M$ dash - all well and good I say but..... when booting via power button I get the M$ clock setting screen. So I set the clock (as you do - I'm compulsive about my clocks being set right). The led around eject button is orange as it should be so I try the IGR (L trigger, R trigger, back & start) and voila unleashX loads.
So my ? is why doesn't it boot straight to unleashX from the power button...

after you set the time once and reboot does it give you the set time screen again?..If this continues , you can copy your eeprom.bin file in C:\shadowc\ folder and the settings should stay.. ( real C, disable shadowc first by running E:\ndts\default.xbe)

First post here, I have been doing a ton of reading and i finally took the plunge.......... I regret it.
Never modded anything but my Razr Phone from Verizon (mostly hex reading). I have a 360 and figured i would do something to my old xbox that has been lonely since the 360 launch haha. I dont care about doing modchips, or even the $30.00 action replay trick, i needed something challenging.
This was it.So i read up on 3 topics, including this current topic.
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=332179http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=244043I have a unmodded xbox. Completly 100% stock, straight from sears shelves. No HD upgrade, nothing.
During my mod I got a message saying it could not find a xbox current dashboard. Uh oh....
Then freakin shadowc ended the upload because there was not enough room or whatever.
So i unplugged everything and got this when i plugged it back in....

I did nothing with eeprom, and made absolutly no backups because i noticed many people posting the ease of this softmod.. Welp, do i have a paperweight now? I have no chips, no mods, nothing on this xbox. As you can see I dont even have a dashboard currently lol. I made 2 ISO discs, 1 with everything suggested in the tut and one with just bare bones because shadowc kept cutting off the process with its "not enough storage". Is it possible to still save this xbox by hotswapping and retrying?

KK, here is a detailed description what i did, I sure hope someone can help me out here.
Downloaded files on computer:

Currently in this pic the eeprom and F folders are empty.
this is the ndure folder, with the updated ndure file that i had to switch from .htm like stated in the tut.
This is the C folder
this is the E folder
Dash folder

Ok, finally i took the Primary IDE from the PC, disconnected it from the PC HD, also disconnected the IDE connecting into the xbox HD,
so the male Primary IDE from the PC fit to the female HD on the xbox ,readied the PC to start on disc boot, did the hotswap carefully, and i was in, the HD was unlocked. I followed everything as stated above, beside eeprom and backup, then got the errors on the PC saying
1. Cannot find a current dashboard.
2. Cannot proceed, not enough staorage for shadowc backups.
I then finished the process and turned off the PC and xbox. I didnt lock it back up with any tools, it said above it was not needed.
After that my xbox is dead. Any ideas?
