I can't edit my last post and here's an update. I took the drive back out and redid the process. This time my xbox now boots, with no errors, but straight to the MS Dash. It's the same whether I boot with the power button or eject button.

I've also got the 'Error 21' problem, but I can live without the MS Dash.

I had some problems with ulock the xbox hd. Hope this can help some.

Have 1.6 version, i boot the PC and the Xbox at the same time, played a song in xbox hd for about 10 sec, then pause it, took the ide out from xbox hd, and then hurry connect xbox hd into ide from pc.
The power on xbox hd must be on all time.
Had then this screen on pc when i connected the ide from pc to xbox hd.

Hi I followed Textbooks tut for my new xbox that I got last week. My xbox has got dash version D1.00.5960.01 which is what the tut recommends.

After I did the mod I was given an error 21 code straight after the xbox logo all the time so I searched and found it was recommended that I restore the backup and try the mod again, so I did that but now I get error 16 straight after the xbox logo when booting with both the tray open and closed.

I can't ftp to the box as I cant get to the dash so I'll have to hotswap again.

Does anybody know if there's a simple fix to do?

After swapping the HDD we choose option 1 on the disk( 1 + 2 gave same error) and it scrolled loads of writting, only obvious error message we could pic out was:
'Kmod: failed to exec /sbin/mod/probe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2' (remove '') After putting the HDD back in the xbox the power light(green circle round eject button) flashes red constantly and the xbox does nothing, we've checked the connections.

Also once this is modded can we set up new HDD's (eg. 200GB) using this Xbox and leave our original HDD's untouched?

There's 3 of us, we all have a newest one (manufactured 15-May-2005 came with newest dash) and one of my mates has an older one which we broke.

do you see any errors in the tv?.. if you connect the xbox to tv it should give you a error code like 7/9.

i have done this NDURE mod and upgraded to a 250gb Maxtor DiamondMax 21 the only errors i got during the whole experience which concern me a little are:

I was trying to softmod my box. Here's what happened:
1.I hooked up the xbox hd with the PC's power cord
2.I booted up both my xbox and pc.
3.box went to MS Dash , PC went to xboxhdm screen.
4.I hotswapped the HD and pressed 1
5.The pc started loading and it said "No xbox data found ..... Please reboot. Type "reboot" or smth. like that"
6.I typed reboot when my xbox hd was still hooked up with my pc's IDE and power cord.
7.I tried to install NDURE again but the same thing happened.
8.I disconected my xbox HD and hooked it up as normal.
Now when i turn on my xbox i doesn't even load and it doesn't even show an error message. Only if I disconect the HD it loads up to error 7. when I was softmodding my linux cd was in the cd drive and there was no other HD hooked up to the PC (I have 2 and they were the primary drives so i disconected 'em). What can I do? Can I repair my Xbox? Please help me! Thank You all in advance!

About time:

After fooling with the font exploit forever, I came across this. Again, I had some problems, which I eventually worked out.

*Note. If you try this tut and you are sure everything is set up right, and your hd is unlocked, make sure your hd jumpers are set to master instead of cable select, as mine was being detected as hdb rather then hda.*

Anyways. My problem. When I hit the power button, the mod works fine. However when I hit the eject button to power on my xbox, I get an err 21 and my drive closes halfway, pauses, then closes the rest of the way. Why is this, and is there any fix? Possibly looking for a dashboard that isnt there?

I successfully modded my original xbox.. but now I am having trouble doing my new virgin one... which I believe is a September 02 model (1.1 ? China.. samsung dvd drive)

It has 5960 dash, and 4187 kernel, which I've burnt to the CD using ndure installer.. all appears to go fine except it comes up with "cannot find /c/media/* and /c/bios/*" when i try to copy using ndure.. otherwise it seems to complete the process.. When i reboot my xbox, it just goes to the xbox logo with the 'microsoft' text, and won't proceed further. If I try 2. to 'create fresh c installation' it does not give an error, but doesn't work either.

I can restore from backup, and it goes back to as it was... but not having much luck with it softmodding to bring up unleashX.

Last time worked a charm..

Any suggestions of what I may be doing wrong??

I think I found out my mistakes:
1.My network cable was unplugged.
2.My keyboard is connected to the PC with a USB cable.

But still: What should I do? The HD doesn't unlock if the box boots into error 7.....And if I install a modchip will it fix my problem?

@predator666, thst the error you get when you have some files missing from cd.. check the cd and make sure you have "bios" and "media" folder in cd's \ndure\C\ folder.

@sandwraith, when you boot your xbox with har drive connected, does the LED changes in xbox?.. Error 7 means hard drive timeout and a symptom of broken hard drive. a modchip will fix it if hotswapping doesnt work

Well,when I boot up the Xbox with a connected HD it just shows a black screen , the HD or smth. makes some strange noises like looping and the LED starts turning red-green-red-green etc. Only if I boot it up with a disconnected HD it shows error code 7

i have found a problem with my setup ... if there is a game in the xbox before its switched on then when you turn the xbox on it loads the game fine but when i eject the game the xbox goes into error 21 i don't know what causes this could it be something to do with an empty virtual C: ?

@sandwraith, you can still try to hotswap with the hard drive connected with different timings.. xboxhdm didnt do anything the the hard drive since it was never be able to launch any scripts.. make sure the pins in the back of hard drive is intact and the jumper is set to master.

its due to missing files in real C. The msdash cant find all the files needed for it to operate. make sure real C has these files and folders:

fonts
Audio
xboxdashdata.185ead00
xodash
xb0xdash.xbe

What do you mean by timings? How can I change them? And I am sure about the pins and that I used the primary master IDE cable? Anything else......?

My real C appears to not have the audio or Fonts directory, however they are in my fake C.

Would I just need to copy over the Fonts and Audio directory from fake C to finx this problem then?

I notice that your xboxdashdata is .185ead00, while mine appears to be an older version. Could this be a problem? My current M$ Dash version is 5659. Is it the fact that I dont have 5660? If so, how can I get this dash. The only 2 games I have now is Project 8, and Sims Bustin' out.

OK. Before I try the softmod again can you give me any more info or other ways to do it , because last time it fkked up my Windows too and I had to reinstall it

ahhh.. legend! Got it working last night after I read your post.. I found out I had been trying to build the ISO on my PC's C: drive which was nearly full.. no wonder it wasn't working properly, half the files weren't in the ISO! It didn't really give an error and built like a small iso, so was a little hard to tell, as all seemed to be going ok.

Once I got that sorted, it was all apples. Thanks..

just an idea but maybe you could desribe the commands in the xboxhdm ndure installer scripts so that people could do it manually and see if they can get it to work that way i for one would be willing to test that on my original xbox hd to see if it would work.

and if it didn't succeed i have got multiple ways of restoring the hd by simply unlocking the hd on one of my pcs and then either restoring it using the image of the hd or using the disc i used to upgrade my hd.

I would suggest using the updated script since it has some bug fixes and addition from the original. You can still do it manually. Before you do that, repair the C drive first and see if xbox boots to msdash ( return xbox to stock). Then you within xbrowser you can copy the files yourself you want or use the script to copy the files.

to do it manually, just copy the files from ndure/c/ folder to C drive and ndure\e\ folder to E drive. make sure in C\xodash\ folder, copy earnie.xtf beforee you copy xbox.xtf file.

edit: just out curiousity why does the order in which files are copied matter?

Just one more question before I softmod:
I have 2 HDDs on my PC and they are the Primary master and slave IDE chanells. Should I disconect them both or leave one of them or it doesn't matter?

i'm no expert mate but i would only connect the xbox hd to your pc while soft-modding to avoid f##king up one of your other hds

Good luck .. eh i tell you something once you can get enough working you can have some real fun experimenting with homebrew i have got a genesis emulator running one of my own personal rips of sonic compilation i love that mean bean machine game and i used to wonder if it would be possible to use it on future machines (either pc or console) because one thing i realised is made by man broke by man (not broke as in not working but broke as in hacked/modified)

Okay, I followed the tutorials, and it worked great. I even fixed the problem I was having with cd eject. My one last question. With this softmod, using Ndure, there was an option for NKPatcher to use .67 or something like that.



I checked this option - but when I go into my file manager, no G drive shows up. Is there something else that I need to do to get use of my other 100G? The drive I installed was a 250G.

use unleashx to format G drive. ( password is Xbox). Also make sure G drive is enabled in unleashx xml file.

ok i tried copying the original dashboard files onto C: because i discovered loads were missing from xboxdashdata.185ead00 and other folders and i came across a situation where it seems like the hd is full because FlashFXP couldn't transfer files anymore it just created files of the name of the file i were trying to copy and these files were 0 bytes in size.

btw it is safe to delete shadowc.img, filler1.img and filler2.img isn't it? because i did. if NDURE will work without them but needs them for one reason or another i'll put back whats needed back.

oh and one last thing is i don't intend on using xbox live which is why i think shadowc was created.

anyway i turned on my xbox this morning and even with filler1.img, filler2.img and shadowc.img missing it still runs fine, but obviously i still have some errors with the install to fix so i have had a look at the updated installer script and found the part that installs NDURE and done my best to translate it.

Heres what i got from it:

• in "XBOX/E" make directory "backup"
• copy "XBOX/C/*" to "XBOX/E:/backup" and replace as needed
• in "XBOX/C:" make directories:
  "media", "bios" and "shadowc"
• in "XBOX/E" make directories:
  "ndts", "dash" and "apps"
• copy "CD/ndure/C/xodash/*.xbe" to "XBOX/C/xodash" and replace as needed
• in "CD/ndure/C/xodash" copy both "ernie.xtf" and "xbox.xtf" to "XBOX/C/xodash" no replacements needed
• in "CD/ndure/C/media" copy all files to "XBOX/C/media" and replace as needed
• in "CD/ndure/C/bios" copy all files to "XBOX/C/bios" and replace as needed
• in "CD/ndure/C" copy "*.xbe" to "XBOX/C" and replace as needed
• in "CD/ndure/E/dash" copy all files to "XBOX/E/bios" and replace as needed
• in "CD/ndure/E/ndts" check for "default.xbe" if you find it copy all files from there to "XBOX/E/ndts" and replace as needed

After installing the ndure, it says the hdd is full and some files can't be transfered, it is normal?
And after that when I boot the xbox it loads the normal MS Dash, maybe bad instalation?

shadowc.img is needed incase some game to update your C drive. The game will then find shadowc, which is a fake C so it doesnt matter if it gets updated. Your real C drive will be intact after the updare.

means that, if you find shadowc.img file in cd then copy it to xbox's C\shadowc\ folder



this part first mounts the shadowc.img so that it appear to linux as a real writable disk space. It then copies the C drive backup to shadowc. AFter its done copying, it then unmounts the image. After everything is done, the script copies fille image and evox dash.

if you cant find whats wrong with your C drive. Then you have two options. Get a 5960 dash from somewhere. Delete everything on c drive and copy the dash files to C. It will turn your xbox back to retail and then you do the hotswap again.

or, you can strip the C drive to bare minimum. Delete, fonts, Audio, xboxdashdata.185ead00, xodash\audio and xodash\media\ folder. Then copy the files of fresh 5960 dash to C drive (except xboxdash.xbe file and xodash\xonlinedash.xbe file).

its normal. Whne it boots to xboxdash, update the date and time to current date and time. Reboot, it should boot to unleashx with power button.

are there other ways of mounting shadowc.img in windows so that i can mod my C and E drives on my pc create xboxhdm disc on a re-writeable disc test it an if it doesn't work try again?

Something really strange just happened . I had told you about my problem (box wouldn't boot , HD looping and so on..)I just turned on my xbox to try disconecting the DVD and see when the red light begins to change. My HD was unbolted. The xbox booted fine...maybe it was because when i was screwing the bolts back to the HD one of them was misscrewed and was tilted. Now I am too scared to try the softmod again , maybe tonight..
Oh and I just put in an pirate CD and it said "Ivalid game region . Remove disk....." Should it say this or have I done something wrong with burning it?

lol how did you manage to put your IDE Cable in upside down? you'd have to force it in there lol.

i'm still at war with my xbox i can get the exploit started but my ms dash just doesn't want to boot because its bin setup wrong.

No man it just slides in as if it's not turned upside down. I'm still kinda scared to try again so maybe tonight or tomorrow...or maybe next year ... who knows....

listen mate if you can get back into your hd even when your xbox can't and then restore it to retail so the xbox can use it again then i don't see any reason to give in apart from if you decide you don't want to do the soft-mod, but your xbox your choice

Question:Do I need to install anything else except the softmod to play pirate games? Or do I just burn them with ISORecorder or Nero or any other programe?

I would just like to add my thanks to the original poster and all those that contributted to this and the supporting tutorials.
Without any previous experience (only owned xbox for 3 weeks and never used a modded one) I took a newly purchased xbox and soft modded it with the tutorial here, then replaced the Hard Drive with a 250Gb one and installed XBMC.

Had a couple of very minor problems (eg the original soundtrack that I recorded to be able to Pause the drive in an unlocked state must have been corrupted during the process. I was not able to create any additional Soundtracks. After renaming the "music" folder on E/TDATA/fffe0000 a new one was automatically created and the problem fixed). On the whole is was a pretty painless process.

Hi, I have just built a new pc and tried running xboxhdm but i dont think linux has a driver for my onboard ide controller (biostar 965PT mobo). I know the ndure disk works fine as i used it on a previous machine to do a softmod, so was wondering if\how i can add a driver that will recognise my cd.

unfortunately the xbox-linux stopped updating the kernel a long time ago.. so your best chance is to use the old computer. If thats unavailable, you can use xplorer 360 which work inside windows to copy the exploit files manually.
