Hi,
I now this is really off-topic but whats some good bass songs for a begineer (me) to learn. I already learnt green day - hitchin a ride, papa roach - she loves not, system of a down - aerials, white stripes - seven nation army, green day - long view and nirvana - come as you are.
Any other songs that are really easy to learn but sound really good I realy wanna learn. Or in fact, any bass players out there, what should I be working on next , (all that hammer stuff). All I really know at the moment is how to read tabs.
cheers.

Anything you hear on the radio would be considered basic stuff, so just find songs you like and learn them.

But on the harder side of things, Les Claypool is astonishing. Check out Primus and listen to his tone, technique and style, it will floor you.

One of the best things to learn on the bass and should impress some is Kiss God of thunder. Plus its also one of the best bass solo's when you see the real thing. I say learn some Kiss, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Motley Crue. Besides you can impress chicks by learning those bands songs.

I play bass. check my site for a pic of my guitars if ya want to.

I reccomend, for a really cool solo to inpress people, the all-bass intro to N.I.B. by Black Sabbath.

also Billy Jean by Michael Jackson

i play a little bass...mostly guitar.
start learning your jazz. it'll get you goin.
also a cool/quick to learn bassline would be timebomb-rancid.

Sorry, I don't play with bass. I am not fond of fishing, and playing with alive/dead fish is just not cool.

Learn your music first, for the bass, try to learn which note each of the frets are and which notes go together.

Then learn jazz and/or blues, once you get the basic stuff like that down, you'll be able to write and play-by-ear anything you want..

Me? I play guitar and piano smile.gif

Exactly beerchug.gif don't learn songs or riffs if you want to really learn to play.... the majority of tunes you're gonna hear on the radio are written in C major dry.gif and are not goin to teach you to think because 90% of popular musicians can't play themselves... learn your scales/modes/key sigs and then learn how to improvise.... its great to learn tunes by green day or black sabbath to get some mechanical ability just don't get caught up in it or you will never advance past the basics. Jazz and blues are great for a beginner to learn because it creates "style" based improv based on progressions.

Check out...
John Patittucci and Stanley clarke, my 2 favs... Dave Holland is a monster too beerchug.gif

think what gain was touching on is that if you can play jazz/blues you can play anything you hear

My next step was either learn how to use more fingers (I Can only use two at the mo, the other two hurt to much biggrin.gif ) when changing OR to either learn chords properly as the only chord I know at the moment is G (this is on a electric), which isn't a good start. Cheers for all you help though.

I also need a better amp, any idea as to whats a good amp for bass tunes (the make, like Marshall) but keep in mind that my budget for an amp is about anything under 200 hundred quid ( i think thats about 380 dollars blink.gif ). Is this not enough?

ALSO true or false - As a wanna be bass player I shouldn't learn chords on a electric as I won't be able to play bass properly again.(6 strings to 4)

OMG!!! Xbox dweebs talking about Bass playing!

Would you believe i own a 6 String Custom OverWater with a Blue Wooden Finish?!

Believe it true, i newst to be in a band and got really heavy into it, but now we have broke up and my Guitar chills out in the atic!

Yeah, I agree about learning the notes. If you can learn where the notes are and memorize them, the entire world of music will open up for you. I am a semi pro level guitar player with about 16 years experience and guitar and bass both require memorization of notes on the neck. Once you do that, every song ever written is yours. It takes time, but it is worth it. If you don't believe my credentials, goto -

Being an avid video gamer for years, I have been goofing around with the music from the original NES Castlevania. Check them out. I play Keyboard, Bass and Guitar, and the drums are loops (I used Acid loop 3 to record this stuff) enjoy!

This is for Jackster: Get a peavey 15 inch amp for your bass, around $300
Right now i got a perfect condition peavey 4x12 cab and a 200 watt randall head, all for 400 (i play guitar). Peavey is extremely loud. I recomend you just look around and buy used stuff if u cant afford new. If you see a little dent or ding u can usually get around 100 taken off by just complaining.

i own an ibanez 4 string bass, electric. the majority learn to play on an electric--there's absolutely no reason why that would hold you back.
learn scales--it's a very important part.
while your learning the scales-learn the notes to the scales.
ie:
Amaj:

-----|-------|-----|------|-----|---------------
-----|-------|g#-|--a---|-----|---------------
-----|--d---|-----|--e---|-----|---f#---|-----
-----|--a---|-----|--b---|-----|---c#---|-----

make sure you learn the notes-while you learn each scale.
this will make it easier to improvise as well as write songs.

theagent
also when you're learning chords...learn to create chords.
take a triad for example (chord with 3 notes).
it's the 1, 3, 5 of a scale.

so take that Amaj scale and take the first, third, and fifth note from that scale and there you have your Amaj chord.
although on guitar notes are usually double to get a fuller sound.

the third note is the definitive note-- it tells you if the chord if major, minor...
flatten the third to get an Aminor.
get rid of the third note add a 4th...and you'll get an Asus4
which is a neutral note--neither major or minor...its a suspended chord. add the 7th note to the chord...and you'll have an A7sus4.

is this making sense?? its definately not easier this way--its just more complete--and better.
Colonel32
nice Agent beerchug.gif thats is a cool way at looking at sus and aug triads!! i teach theory when i'm not playing(drums) and there is a few kids that would probably understand that better than the way the textbook teaches...

I know what u mean but you should be careful saying that..... as is doesn't always apply when dealing with tri tone subs and that other boring jazz stuff laugh.gif

What kind of stuff you musicians listen too? ussually you can tell alot about a person by the tunes they choose to listen too.... whomever said Vic Wooten... no shit i met him like three months ago and he is WEIRD as hell... really hard to talk too and understand

He seems like he'd be a freak. But, d4mn. That boy can play. He's not just a show off either. He's got a good thing going on. It's pretty cool how he puts his trademark technique out on the web like that.
Colonel32
ya him and stu hamm got a thing going with that whole slap the bass like dribbling a basketball thing...... ohmy.gif and ya the deal with wooten is he is an amazing jazz player with great understanding of styles of classical western theory, but people only know him from bela fleck solo's.... i saw him tune all his strings down and back up in the middle of a bass solo and do it all by ear biggrin.gif made me want to cry

Try to learn some stuff by Mike Gordon of Phish. Here are some Phish Tabs

Try Active Bass for some really good lessons and basics

wow, cheers everyone. I think the next thing i should do is to play perfect scales and switching chord or notes or whatever (I can't really speak the lingo of bass plaing yet). Cheers for advice on the amp cam.

I just tried to learn 'nice guys finish last by green day', should i be worried that my fingers feel like I've just set fire to them ph34r.gif and also that I can't hit strings fast enough> I guess practice makes perfect right?

AND FINALLY I've been using talkbass.com for my lessons and guides and stuff, is that good website to use?

Thanks for all your help everyone and sorry to the mods for keeping this topic alive when its got nothing to do with computer gaming.
