Full Version: Question About Setting Up A Dual Hd Flip-switch...

Ok, I've read THIS tutorial about 20 times and I still have some questions:

1. What voltage/wattage would the DPDT switch have to be? I went to my local Radio Shack to get one of those switches and they told me that I'd need a heavy duty switch since it would be sending power to HD's. I'm thinking they're wrong??

2. Since there is no fuse...couldn't this be hazardous to my HD's (in terms of too much power being sent to them/shorts)?

3. Would there be a way to test the setup (in terms of, if there is enough power/too much power being sent to the HD's) without frying them?

4. How many volts does a HD's power cable normally send to the HD?

Thanks in advance guys!

Go to llamma.com, they have a dual HDD kit that comes with the switch, wires, and an ATA cable that fits two HDDs. PM me if you can't find it.

I realize that they have a package you can buy, but I have everything already except the actual switch. And there are a few switches on ebay that look really sweet compared to the normal metal kind.

Anyways, the questions that I really need to know are:

What voltage must the switch be??

What is the voltage that a normal HD power cable sends to the HD??

You'll need a DPDT -Double Pole Double Throw- Switch available at: Radio Shack, don't need a big one, just one rated for 3 amps or so, really anything above 2amps should be good.

Can anyone verify this information?? Has anyone tried doing one of these??

Also, what about not having a fuse...couldn't that be hazardous to my HD's??

Your xbox is always going to be off when you switch them, so no fuse is needed, as no fuse is needed when running just one HD. I have no idea how many amps a HD pulls, but it really cant be a lot.
