I've attached a link to a version of NESCafe that works through Media Center on the Xbox 360. This is currently setup to run at 480p (Widescreen). You can edit the nes.htm file if it does not fit correctly on your screen. I haven't found a way to add a menu for the roms list so you will have to edit the nes.htm and change <param name="ROMFILE" value="/roms/whateverrom.zip" /> to whatever Nes rom you want to play. I've included a Public Domain rom for testing but have verified Zelda1-2, Excitebike, and TecmoBowl and all worked.
Please do not ask for ROMs as they are quite easy to find (Google - "Nes Roms"). dry.gif

DOWNLOAD RAR: http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=58730

INSTALL:
You will need to extract the rar into C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Media Center\Media Center Programs\ on your media center box. It took a bit for the icon to show up under More Programs but it finally will.

NOTES: Sound is not functioning, Media Center 2005 is required. If it locks up you will need to run something that warns you that it is a web page and check the box that says "Don’t show this again". Once you do that it should run fine. I created an MCL that just went to Google and then checked that box. I've also attached an image with the mapping of the Xbox Controller to the corresponding keyboard keys.

It seems that it will run with sound through a normal browser but not through MCE. Anyone have ideas on that?

I think I can get a GEN and TG16 version of PotatoEmu working as well if I can figure out how to not have the splash screen (It requires a left mouse click to start)
Unlimited
Gen would rock so hard, please get that working!
Thanks for the NES emulator, about to try it...

Works real good, hopefully the sound will be in the next version. keep up the good work, hopefully this plus the firmware hack will enable users to play roms from other systems, and someday homebrew (LOL)

i had the same problem
you have to select the menu more programs by pressing (A) in the main menu
and it should appear
but when it loads it runs slow and sometimes i get a connection failure so im guessing it is wireless
im going to hardwire and try see if it improves

and it isnt legal after 24 hours of having the rom
Xexter
My media center is an AMD 3000+ and while this is running I pretty much peg out my processor at 100%. I don't think anything else can be going on while you are playing. I think thats why there is some lag for some people. I am also connected between the two at 100Mbit (Cat5) which could make a difference. RDP (Remote Desktop) to your media centers while you are playing and check the processor in task manager. Post your processor speed, how much ehExtHost.exe is taking up, and how it ran for you...
yankefish
Yeah thats what i thought the 24 hour rule guess i was wrong, im hardwired and having the same loading problem, im on a 6mbit connection so i know its not my speed, maybe a error with the pc or router

i have a p4 3.2 ht, 1gig ram, and 120 g. hdd, when using mce my cpu uses less than 10%. i kinda confused the same thing happens when i use transcode 360 also takes about 10-15 minutes to recode also to load divx files
luther349
that emulator as always been slow. the xbox isnt relly emulating anything your pc is.
nmf4505
^^ That is why we are getting process speeds and utilization ^^

i have an intel p4 lga775 3.0GHz : 2 Gigs of ram
at idle im a 1% and while running the emulator im at 55-65%
but it is laggy
my wireless connection conectivity is at max
the link speed is 11 Mbps to my router

ummm
i think it must be my connection
the emulator wont lag when running it in my browser
yankefish
yeah some problem here im going to see if i casn run mce in safemode, this i know if its my pc of my connection.

Exactly, thats why we are talking about processors on the media center. I realize this isn't native emulation "on" the xbox but it does work. I get about 95% framerate wich is perfectly playable. I think if I had a better processor I would get a perfect framerate. Might be as close as you will get for a while and with the key mappings to the xbox controller, its pretty seamless. Did you try it?

Interesting, It could be your Java version on the media center. I'm using Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06.

super mario bros 3
yankefish
what about it
nmf4505
i was just running super mario bros 3 with the emulator, i got the jit meassage asking me if i wanted to run the debug
i let it sit there and eventualy it shut down like xp
it said logging off users the same way xp does then it went back to the 360 dashboard asking me to reconnect

so i think that mce runs on the NT kernel witch would make sence do to the fact that mce can connect to windows and windows only
LuridSpectre
Guys, there is no such thing as the "24 hour rule."

If you don't own the cartridge, you don't own the rom, and therefore you are not legally allowed to have it.

End of story.

Hello, I was wondering do you have to have the MCE remote to check the box that comes up, because I cant check it with my controller.
yankefish
i dont have the remote, my kid destroyed it, i use my wireless controller just make sure u have media connect running on your mce cpu or if u like open up media center just make sure u have the correct folders shared. i finally got the emulator working, works pretty good, but i will stick to my xbox for playing rms offmy hdd for now till a more stable release come out, keep up the good work Xexter

Its probably locked up and thats why you can't click it. Use this MCL to check the box and then it shouldn't show up again.

nice work! I hope Atari is next!

i see the legal issues of roms and emulators a lot in here and over at digitpress.com. What I've learned is that it's ok to have the emulators and roms as long as the hardware or games are no longer readily available. This isn't "word of mouth" from a guy that knows a guy. this is straight from the DMCA of 1998. The Library of Congress amended the DMCA in 2003 to make an exemption for video games and computer software that was considered obsolete.

Here is a summary of the exemption from the US government's copyright website....

(3) Computer programs and video games distributed in formats that have become obsolete and which require the original media or hardware as a condition of access. A format shall be considered obsolete if the machine or system necessary to render perceptible a work stored in that format is no longer manufactured or is no longer reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.

I don't see Nintendo and Atari running out to prosecute us twenty-somethings for getting a Contra-itch every once in a while. The only question left to interpretation is who decides what is "reasonable available"? I don't see any Nintendo systems rolling off the assembly lines so I would assume you're safe to store them on your home PC.

Personally, I collect old games so chances are good that I own the game (several times over in some cases). I'm not trying to argue wether I'm for or against emus and roms. I would just like to know if anyone else has any hard information to refute the DMCA exemption.
Xexter
My next attempt is to get PotatoMulti to embed correctly in a local html file so that it can run just like NESCafe. My only problem is that this doesn't seem to be open source so key mappings might be a headache. On the plus side it looks like sound works perfectly when played through a normal browser.

Here is a link to their java app if anyone wants to take a crack at it. http://www.game-oldies.com/index-downloads.htm

It's supposed to support Nintendo NES/Famicom, Nintendo Game Boy/Game Boy Color, NEC TurboGrafx-16/PC-Engine, Coleco Colecovision, Sega Master System, Sega Game Gear and Sega Genesis/Megadrive.

I think the closest to Atari I'm going to get is Colecovision...

The Library of Congress has recently granted copyright exemptions in the Digital Millenium Act to obsolete games. The exemption applies to games that require the original hardware as a condition of access, and if the game is “no longer manufactured or reasonably available in the commercial marketplace.” This means that old, unsupported PC, console and arcade games will now be legal to own (so your illegal copy of Mame roms are now legit). The only muddy side is if publishers consider their old games to be “reasonably available” and plan to release classic games as bundles or bonuses, then the copyright protection still stands.

Nintendo Revolution will run NES , SNES , N64 Gamecube and Revolution games , so that makes it illegal to have a copy of the game without owning the original one or buying it from the Revolution Marketplace.

I'm going to need that in english with some punctuation.

"The Connecting" Does this mean that you have media center up and running and your xbox 360 is connected to it?

if so, all you need to do is follow the instructions in the first post.
Noob_4life
You Need Windows Media Center 2005 right to make it work no Xp/Home edition
Xexter
Correct.
The_MF_Boss
You might be having the same problem as I was. I extracted the files it extracted them into a new folder with the same name as the zip file. I had to take the folder and the executable out of the folder in oreder for it to show on the 360
Noob_4life
thnks
The_MF_Boss
That was the problem?
hecz
ive extracted the rar in here C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Media Center\Media Center Programs

nothing happens i waited like half and hour
The_MF_Boss
When you go to media center programs is it just one folder that says snes_emulator?
