VLC360 v1.2
-- Posted by XanTium on March 27 12:36 EST
VLC360 is a french application (MCE plugin), similar to Transcode 360(info) and MCE Video Encoder(info), that will encode XViD, DiVX and other video formats on-the-fly so you can stream them from your Windows MediaCenter PC to your Xbox 360.
As the name suggests it, VLC360 is based on VLC/VideoLan and of course it does require Windows MediaCenter 2005 as OS.
This is the first version posted here on Xbox-Scene, but here's the changelog from v1.0 to v1.2:
* You can now install VLC360 anywhere you want on your Windows MediaCenter PC.
* Update of VLC (should solve problem with crashing of interface when using special characters)
* Support of subtitles in SRT format.
* For DVDs in .img and .iso it will auto select the french language (can be changed to english see
forum thread).
* Support of more formats (I have no exact list)
* VLC will start as service (background application) on your PC.

Wow... .img and .iso support for DVDs? This is awesome. I'll have to give this a shot later when I get home. This looks to be a step closer to My Movies plugin integration than Transcode360 right now as it supports DVD isos.
I'm assuming that for the DVD .iso support that we have an option somewhere to change the default language back to English? I can't seam to find any other docs to download and read up on this program aside from the .msi install file.

Thanks Neor.
A couple of quick questions since I can't test it right now. For the dvd .iso/.img support, I am assuming that it will just play through all of the videos that it finds in the image file. So if it's a full retail dvd iso it's decoding, VLC360 will play the videos for the previews, the menu screen, etc before VLC360 actually starts to play the actual movie files within the .iso? So this means no FF or skip options to go straight to the movie file, which means for the best setup, we will need to have .iso files that only contain the main movie file and none of the added previews and extras?
Also I see in the code that you posted that the default audio channel is 2. Does VLC360 have the capability of doing 5.1 DD out as well from .divx and .iso files?

Even though I haven't gotten anything to play I think this is turning out to be an astonishing bit of software and I thank you for it.
I have set it up correctly and so on, my question lies with it's ability to see the mapped drives on the MCE. All of my media isn't stored on the MCE machine. It sits on a narly server with a huge RAID array. I've been using Transcode 360 and it's able to utilize the mapped drives. Is it just something I need to change in one of the scripts? Seems simple enough to me. I'm going to go ahead and start looking for it, but I was also wonder if you could point in me in the right direction.
Cheers!!

Found a quick fix for anyone else having issues with it...
Map your drives AFTER you start MCE on your 360, they'll show right up.
Sorry to bother. Amazing app again! Very pleased.

Yes dude it does FF and RW , but it only works with the buttons on the player not on the controler or remote.

Hi all! I am very pleased to see all this development happening on the video playback.
I have been participating with runtime (from www.runtime360.com = transcode 360) to prepare the next generation movie playback solution for the 360. It will still involve MCE 2005 but you should expect full screen playback with pause, resume, skip forward & skip backward capabilities.
This solution will not be based on WMV9 or VLC. ffmpeg will be used instead... and you all know how good ffmpeg is at reading pretty much any files (with some exception but he, nothing is perfect). VLC is actually using ffmpeg to read most files...
A beta of this new solution should be available within the next two weeks (hopefully closer to a week) but all depend on runtime ability to write the integration in MCE!
I hope the next version of T360 will be able to do as good as VLC360. The .iso playback is certainly a nice feature that I hope we can integrate.
Cheers!

Yeah, that was one of the major things I've noticed with VLC360. The significantly lower cpu usage and significantly reduced wait times. Not to mention the XBMC style text only navigation through directories makes things quicker. I just wish you could turn off the damn "carebear" icons in MCE and just go text only. Over a wireless connection it takes forever to load all of the icons for a megaton of movies.
Again, well done and I"m excited to see what comes next.

I tried this out last night and it works amazing! Transcode 360 worked pretty well but regularly the video would freeze (either audio or video) and the thought of starting the file over from scratch made me just go recode to MPG2 or WMV.
Every file I threw at VLC360 v1.2 worked without any problems and the ability to reliably pause is simply amazing.
Thanks for the excellent work neor! I am excited to see what you have planned for v1.3 and beyond.!

thanks to the devs for a great little app, i to am having a few teething probs as well, seems that i am not getting very stable throughput on my network and i'm reaching around 80/90% cpu usage whilst playing back both xvid and mpeg streams resulting in pixelation and freezing. could this be a codec issue? i'm a total noob as far as all this transcoding business goes so any help would be greatly appreciated. btw i have the k-lite codec pack installed..

I have had no problems so far. This was my installating process.
First I uninstalled all other codecs I had installed then I...
1. Downloaded and Installed
K-Lite Codec Pack 2.71 FULL (Full includes ffdshow).
2. Downloaded and installed
VLC360 1.2 and replaced the file in the dir with
VideoFiche. (changes audio to english)
3. Ran the vlc360.bat file.
4. Rebooted and everything worked great.
So I managed to watch/stream a full movie on a P4 2.4Ghz with 448MB RAM (Inspiron 5100 laptop) with about an average of 40% cpu usage and pretty much full RAM usage. This was not possible with Transcode 360.

This is a fantastic tool and signs of a very positive future for MCE integration.
I have to ask something though.
I have tried watching a few videos I have d/l like the new 24 series and they are fine but then I have tried watching some others like a DVD Xvid rip which only plays in 4:3 rather than the 16:9 that 24 plays in. I have checked the files on my PC to ensure that they do display in 16:9 and they are ok through Media Player. Please help as I hate watching squashed videos!!! TIA

thanks for the quick response but I don't want to zoom in on a picture that is still gonna look out of proportion.
The file is in widescreen format and plays correctly in media player on the PC so why won't it play in the correct format via the 360???
Also I am too having issues playing files with an .img extension anybody figured this out yet? I have used the K-lite codec pack mentioned in the previous page and that hasn't helped with either issue.....
*EDIT* Apologies my friend as I just thought I would checkout the differences in zooming after I replied to your post. It works as it goes! There are a couple of options and either the second or third one seems to do a 16:9 without losing anything on the edges. I had no idea that function was there and took what you said as just zooming in to fill the screen and losing out on some of the picture too. Very sorry and thankyou for the help!!!

I think you are skipping the step where you navigate to the install folder (from Widows Explorer or My Computer)
C:\Program Files\dun74\vlc360
and double click the vlc360.bat file.
After that everything should run smooth.

This is a trange behavior of the 360 itself... Don't ask me why... but I am starting to think that it was made like this intentionally by MS.
By the way I have found a work around and it is currently integrated in the next release of transcode 360. It simply involves changing the resolution of the resulting transcoded video and specifying the proper aspect ratio. Unfortunatly VLC does not easilly allow this to be done...
Keep an eye for the next release of T360 and it should fix your problems... By the way, the next release should allow to pass original AC3 and MP2 audio stream to the 360 without requiring a transcode... therefore the DVD rip with 5.1 AC3 should playback in full 6 channel audio! Cool!

Great doftware- this worked perfectly were all else failed!
I have one question though - the system is used by my wife whilst im out and navigating through the C drive etc into my movie folders etc can be quite a task.
Is there any way to start in a lower folder and see everything underneath that rather than seeing A C D Drives completely?
Hope this can be achieved.

Hi all,
Does anyone know where to contact the author of this program, and if he speaks english?
I have not been that much interested in streaming DivX and Xvid, but streaming DVD's is a must have feature for many people.
I myself have looked into streaming DVD's with VLC, but I was not able to find a codec combination that worked.
Without a doubt, it would be awesome for many users to integrate between this program and the "My Movies" add-in I do for Media Center.
Please let me know where to contact the author.
