xUbuntu v0.9.0 - Ubuntu Linux Distro for Xbox -- Posted by XanTium on April 6 01:28 EST
In fact this new distro has been uploaded to the Xbox-Linux SourceForge site several weeks ago, but the launch went totally unannounced so I didn't notice it until now. Beter late than never ... so here are some details I found about this new linux distro port for your Xbox:
[QUOTE]
* What is xUbuntu?
xUbuntu is an PC-/Xbox-enabled version of Ubuntu GNU/Linux distribution. xUbuntu is not a stand-alone, independent distribution. However the install process - and naturally the bootloader, the kernel and the kernel modules - are all customized for PC and Xbox (i386).
The actual release of "xUbuntu" linux system LiveCD is based on sources of Ubuntu "Breezy Badgar, Version 5.10" and some packages of Debian "Sarge 3.1".
There is no relationship between "xUbuntu" linux and "Xubuntu" or "XUbuntu" linux system (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Xubuntu) developed from MOTU Xfce team.

* LiveCD
"xUbuntu" Live-CD boots on hardware of PC (i386) and Xbox (Intel Pentium III 700 MHz, 64 MB RAM). The live system itself does not require any space on your hard disk. But only for Xbox, there is a SWAP-file inside partition Z to force perfomance.
- "xUbuntu" linux system is a lightweight system with the desktop interface "Xfce4".
- "xUbuntu" linux system is lightweight alternative for systems with lower memory configurations.
- "xUbuntu" Live-CD (initialize release) is a dual Boot-CD for PC and Xbox (i386).
- "xUbuntu" linux run with a customized kernel 2.6.12-9-386-cd on normal PCs and with a customized kernel 2.4.31-xbox on a modified Xbox.
- Optionally you can install "xUbuntu linux system on a hard disk of PC and/or Xbox.

* "xUbuntu" GNU/Linux for PC and Xbox
The base system of "xUbuntu" linux system is a base linux system of GNU/Linux Ubuntu distribution ("Breezy Badgar, Version 5.10") with kernel 2.6.X (udev) and without a graphical environment.
As the base system run on PC, the base system was ported to the hardware of a modified Xbox. Therefore, it was necessary to downgrade the kernel and the kernel environment from 2.6.X to 2.4.X. Furthermore the graphical environment was added to the base linux system (x-window-system "xorg" and desktop "Xfce4" environment) and some "Xfce4" / "Gnome" applications. You can run Gnome applications, because desktop "Xfce4" environment provides the possibility to initialize Gnome base system at start-up.
As the linux system run on Xbox, the linux system was re-adapted to PC-hardware with a customized kernel 2.6.12-9-386-cd. The customized kernel 2.6.12-9-386-cd boots up on PC from LiveCD and from hard disk.
"xUbuntu" GNU/Linux for PC and Xbox was born.
The "xUbuntu" linux system LiveCD provides a working solution for PC and Xbox by dual booting.

* Memory configuration (RAM/SWAP size) on PC and Xbox
Live-CD uses only hardware RAM. A linux system installed on hard disk uses RAM and SWAP.
Normally, there are 256 MB RAM or 512 MB RAM inside the hardware of PC. But, there are only 64 MB RAM available inside the hardware of Xbox. Some software applications need a size of 128 MB RAM or 256 MB RAM to start. For example the Web browser "Mozilla Firefox" needs a minimum size of 128 MB RAM to run. If you want to see Video you need a minimum size of 256 MB RAM.
The Live-CD will freeze on Xbox (64 MB RAM), if you run "Mozilla Firefox" on it without an additional SWAP-File.
The hardware RAM size can be extended by adding a SWAP-partition/SWAP-file.
So, there is a SWAP-File inside partition Z of Xbox (only for Xbox) after the LiveCD is started.
If you install "xUbuntu" Linux inside hard disk choose a suitable SWAP size ofswap-partition/swap-file.

Nice. They need to rename it though, to avoid confusion with the other Xubuntu.

Xubuntu.

No, Not another slow linux distro based on debian. Whats the point. Just tried it and it falls flat on it face in comparison to xebian. XDSL is far superior in terms of speed and usability. WHY - Well because its a port of damn small linux which was designed to run on a machine with limited resources like the xbox. Whast is the point. And you should have checked the name, there is an Xubuntu distro for the pc. NUFF SAID

someone over in Europe actually sent us, at work, a box of retail ubuntu cd's. but alas it wont install on my laptop as so many distros do now it gets so far then looses video and it wont com back.

so anyways.. i thru the 5.10 live cd into the xbox and it cant read it. not only that but its lopsided and makes the dvdrom vibrate really bad.

i havent tried the install cd yet..

so do you have to download the xbox version or did i read it incorrectly i tought it said the 5.10 release was xbox ready... ??

this should be cool. how does this compare to Xdsl?

when i insert the disc in the tray, a few linux-related boot text show up in the top, then goes black and my eject button turns orange then shuts off? what would cause this?

Simple answer, put into laymens terms without getting all technical. The Fact is xdsl is a small, fast linux distro that is bundled with small fast loading applications. The whole system is designed to run on hardware with limited resources such as the xbox. XDSL works and works very well on the xbox.

xUbuntu is slow. cant say anymore about xUbuntu. I got bored waiting for it to load.

i got xubuntu running i had a cd i burned from an iso i downloaded from them and the files from the iso on my box run both together i get a login screen but having now usb keyboard/mouse couldnt get much further
noob2modding
got this to work but Cant move with my xbox controller in the login screen, does this require a mouse and keyboard to work?
Smidley
It booted a little slow but OK, but the controller doesn't seem to be compatible. I hooked up my MS Wireless Desktop Elite Duo keyboard and mouse (both go through one USB port), but only the keyboard worked. I never had any problems with this device under Gentoox.

Upon booting again, I took a closer look at the verbose. It said something like "there is already a device assigned to input." I'm assuming it loaded the keyboard, but when it tried to subsequently load the mouse it ran into a device conflict. Even if the mouse and keyboard had their own dedicated USB ports, I doubt it would solve the problem.

A good effort, but it's not there yet.
noob2modding
anyone know the login name and password to use this?

Hi, I don't suppose anyone has any clue how to change the keyboard layout on this? I know it's a long shot, but I'm grasping at straws now.

Currently the keyboard layout appears to be in German - and despite changing this in Xorg.conf, this has had no effect.

How do I change the system wide default keyboard layout in linux?

I just got xUbuntu (Live CD) fully working on my softmodded Xbox. biggrin.gif I burned the iso to an Office Depot CD-R/W, since the TDK CD-R/W I started with didn't read well at all on my Samsung drive. I also bought a wireless USB keyboard & mouse made by Micro Innovations at Wal-mart for $30, both of which were recognized in xUbuntu (I understand that many mice for such combos aren't). I logged-in using "live" as the logon AND password. The main & final problem I had to correct was getting Firefox to go out to the Internet. I had the right settings for my Xbox's IP address and Gateway that xUbuntu uses by default, but the DNS wasn't set to the correct address of my router (192.168.0.2). After some digging, I found that the DNS address is saved in a file under "/etc/resolv.conf", which I was able to locate. I was able to edit it with the text editor in-cluded with xUbuntu and surprisingly was also able to save these changes (changed "192.168.64.1" to "192.168.0.2"). I presume this file was saved to the Z-partition, which I understand is also used for the swap file. However, I suppose I may need to repeat this process the next time I boot up using my Live CD. I was also very limited in the type of pages that could be pulled-up, restricted mostly to simple Google searches (although Google image searches could also be pulled-up fine). I noticed that the <y> & <z> keys were reversed too, which I think is most likely because this is the standard German keyboard layout. For some further/related info., refer to the following link: http://www.xbox-linux.org/wiki/XUbuntu .

Hurm...It sucks that this has a login screen. Because not only do the controller drivers fail but Us without keyboards (me) cant log in. Oh well. If the porters arnt smart enough to include those things...Then perhaps we shouldnt be using there system.
QuickFirePT
Is there any way of getting a Hd version of this?
I'm a total fan of Ubuntu, but I can't run this on my Xbox because I don't have any dvd drive smile.gif
PsiDOC
Tried the latest distro of this and the live cd crashes out on a kernel panic in the squashfs part of the boot.
SQUASHFS error: zlib_fs returned unexpected result 0xfffffffd
SQUASHFS error: Unable to read fragment cache block [1b6500]

Then a whole lot of other zlib_fs and read errors pertaning to the above
and
exec: 221: .: Permission denied
Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init

I have used 3 different types of media including, ll which read correctly with other files / programs in the xbox.

Anyone with linux experience have any suggestions?

Perhaps you shouldn't be commenting on others' intelligence while misspelling simple words like "aren't", capitalizing "Us" in the middle of a sentence, and using "there" instead of "their" lol

umm ok but Ubuntu 5 is forever old.
ViSiON2099
to be honest.... i dont like it at all... it is SSSLLLOOOWWWWW... there are black lines through a part of my screen.. the mouse started trailing to the left about 10 min. in... it is set up for dial-up and cant figure out how to set up broadband.... took about 2 full minutes to load mozilla browser..... did i mention that its SSLLLOOOWWWW... doesnt tell u how to load from hdd, if u transfer files to hdd it hangs on black screen. im gonna try xebian or gentoox next! i tried gentoox about 5 years ago and i was impressed by it then.. i was surprised that my wireless logitech mouse/keyboard combo worked without manually loading any drivers.
luther349
yea using something mainline like ubuntu just isn't gonna happen even if we rebuild all the drivers. but something like puppy tiny core or even arch would probably still work being there all base Linux without the fat.
