With the recent games coming out with extra long filenames making it impossible to copy some files to the hd (without a patch that is) it'd be nice to have a feature built into the dash letting you mount an iso image onto the dvd drive (D:) and being able to run it.

It would be nice yes but requires a hell of lot of Bios/kernal hacking to make it work also the Xbox harddisk has a file size limit on it anyway so a full dvd game wouldn't work
Also there is a program out there that does this but you need to be running the proper nkpatcher softmod for it to work

The Driveimage utilities are open source so some of the legwork work is already done...Perhaps mounting images on a virtual drive is alot, how about being able to run xbox iso's off the hd?

Simply running the ISO off the hardrive is impossible it would need to be mounted in order to do this because the games look for the dvd drive to run things thats why nkpatcher uses a virtual drive.
Also UnleashX the man doesn't like putting stuff into UnleashX that can cause people to stuff up their xbox's by modifying the Bios and stuff. The reason nkpatcher can do it is because it only works on nkpatcher and since its not somthing that everyone uses.
I guess a custom command could be added to mount image useing the existing way of doing things but once again UnleashX the man has very little time these days and probably wont add it. Of course I'm not him so you never know
