How do I do this?
I would like my xbox front LED's to be green when the box is on, and amber (green+red) when the xbox is off. I want to do this with as little hardware as possible. I will probably need some sort of relay, and an alternate power source from the motherboard for the LED's. Can someone help me set up this circuit?

57 views and no suggestions? Please!
I know how the circuit should look. Essentially I need a power source when the box is off and a switch that knows when the box is off. The power source can come from the bottom of the motherboard. I forget which one it is, but it's one of the pins that I use to power the X3IR. The switching thing has got me kind of boggled, though. Do I use a relay? How do I set it up?

Don't do this.
As for your problem it's kind of interesting. The only power when the xbox is off is coming from the 3.3v standby. Now if you just wanted your xbox to always have orange it would be easy to just wire this right to the p/e board. I'm pretty sure that when the xbox turns on that 3.3v is still on so your p/e LED's would remain on.
What about just a simple relay that when you turn the xbox on it turns off?

i'd ask sickmodz or pablot .. what you're looking for is something similar to their led fader, but without the fading.

You're right, it is annoying. LOL. Sorry.

I don't have any experience with relays (except I know that the one in my car for the turn signal is malfunctioning and it click click clicks all the time. I'm getting it fixed Monday). That was where I hoped you guys could help me. Can someone suggest a relay (from Radio Shack preferably) and draw up a little quick and dirty circuit showing how to hook it up, please?

You're right. I have an LED fader in my other xbox, and it functions similarly to what I want. I want to disable the fading. I'm sent an email to sickmods and asked him to join the conversation. There just might be a way to hook up the fader that it changes the color of the LED when off and doesn't fade.

Pablot could probably give you a more creative answer, but ya, a relay would work. It would need to be a SPST relay that is NC (normally closed), then, when it gets power, it opens the circuit and the red LEDs turn off.
The LED Fader could do it too, but pablot would have to modify a custom firmware for you to remove the fading.
There's probably other ways, like using a gate or something, but these are the two I know would work.

I would rather go the LED Fader route, because I have a little experience installing one of those. I'm going to PM Pablot with this proposition, but I'll give $10 + shipping for the fader with the modified firmware.

no need for a mcu for this! Just do like this:

where all the connections can be found
here. (Pwr = Vsb)
doesn't have to be exactly those pnp transistors, but something similar..
if you don't have the parts or don't feel like building it your self then I'm sure that sickdimension will do it for ya for a small fee.

I accidentally bought NPN transistors. Can I make them do what I want to do, or should I just go back and buy pnp ones? They're only about 50 cents, even at radio shack.

I had to go down 23 pages to bump this.
I finally got the transistors from Radio Shack. They shipped them to my old address. I had to call them twice to get them.
After I get back from Vacation, I'm going to do this. I'll be sure to put up pictures.

Ok, I did it. It was probably more trouble than it was really worth, but it got done and I'm happy with it. Here are some pictures.

And, here is the Xbox when it's on:

And when it's off:

Thanks again Pablot for the circuit.
I also made a video for anyone who doubts me. It's about 1.5 mb, and not very exciting, but you can watch it
here if you desire.

I tried doing something similar. Blue on, red off. When I wired the red LED's with the transistors to the 3.3v it worked fine. the xbox was off and the LED's were red. But then the xbox wouldnt turn back on until I disconnected an LED. I figured there was too much power drain for a standby line and didnt give it another thought.
What version is your xbox? Mine was a 1.1 and im positive I didnt wire anything wrong or pull the power on the P/E board.

Mine is a 1.0. It didn't have any power problems.

One final bump for this. The more I look at this, the more I like it.
I wrote a little tutorial for this, in PDF format. You can get it
here, from 360mods.net.
(
360mods.net is the little site that Textbook and I have been working on. There's not much there at the moment, but it's nice looking.
