Is there a macro or somesuch that will allow me to shut down xbmc (and the xbox) with a click of the remote rather than having to navigate through the front menu?

Add this to your keymap.xml file (replacing ## with your predefined number):
<obc##>XBMC.ShutDown</obc##>
