is that the one where you get trapped?
the key you get off him doesnt open the main gate, you have to go back inside and use the key, which allows you to access an area that opens the gate/door.

Don't think I've done this quest, but you do know about the map right. You can just pull up the weapons and armor menu and hit R trigger until you get to the last tab then hit left or right to find the "inside town/area map". I always use that in caves since they are so hard to navigate and I hate running the wrong direction for a minute only to find out I'm further from leaving.

As I recall, you just re-enter the fort, and a door is on your left just inside. The key will open that door and there is a handle to turn. when you exit the fort, the gate will now be open.

Hmmm...I've gone through the Hunter's Run and gotten the Fort Grief Key. Now when I try to go into that side room with the switch, it tells me that I need the key and that it cannot be picked. The key is in my inventory. When I go out the main door, I'm stuck (my meters dont' come up at all and I can't move). There's some guy in armor running around like he wants to get to me, but I can't move and he can't get to me. I'm afraid I'm going to have to revert to a separate save that I did a few days ago, but any ideas would be greatly appreciated

at that part it plays a little story line where the guy kills the guy your trying to rescue for his wife then you kill him and his partner....

So I guess that's the guy who's running around with a weapon drawn. Unfortunately, I can't move, and no script is triggered. He just runs around and never gets to me. I left it sitting for a good 30 minutes and he was still running around...talk about endurance

After doing a little research, I think this is a glitch. So, if you decide to do this quest, save a
separate game file before opening the fort gate. If you do glitch, and you only have one save file (with which you will probably save inside of the fort), you will have to restart your character or wait for some kind fix to become available.
This sucks

but it would be worse if I did't have a separate file from a couple of days ago.

Don't forget to go up the top of the fort and get the Shadowbannish wine out of the chest.

Yeah. It happened to me too, as Aleron Loche was on top of the ruins, and of course Kurdan was so fuckign stupid NOT to go there. Just kept running and running. I had to restart the quest

Yeah well, you know those Orcs....

I believe some people get stuck leaving the Hunter's Run cave (with 3 keys) because of the position of the character that the orc attacks. If the character is outside the cave or up the steps, the game can lock up (with your character frozen in the doorway). If you wait (some time) the character may move--ideally far away from the door.
Before you get the last key do a save and go out the cave and see where the other guy is. When I left the cave, he was nowhere near the cave entrance and I went up the two flights of stairs and saw the orc kill the guy. I hit the Orc with a fireball and as he approached, I kept summoning gosts. He died easy and had enchanted armor.
My son left the cave with the guy right outside and the Orc pounds him. My son is stuck in the door. I read another post that said someone waited until daylight to exit and he could move. That was because the character moved. I'd try any trick you can think of to get the other guy to move -- before you exit the cave. I'll tell my son this theory and see if it works.
I've developed a lot of software and, based on what people are posting, I'm pretty sure my theory is correct. Of course the ultimate protection from software bugs is -- "frequent saves" and one before the task starts.

If you did a save at Fort Grief, before you get the 3rd key (from the last guy), you can go back to that instance (as you can go outside without the orc being present). My son tried it and it worked. The guy was outside on the upper level (up steps). My son walked into the guy and pushed him off the ledge--now he was on the grass. My son made sure he couldn't see him from the door and then completed the cave part--got the last key. When he left the cave he was stuck for a few seconds but then could move--he went up the stairs and fought from up there.
Anyway, the position of the character you are saving (when you leave the cave) is critical to the game getting stuck.

My problem was worse. Even after I killed the guy and got the key, opened the gate and got in the boat, went back to bravil to talk to the guys wife and she tells me to go rescue him. My quest never updated. It still says I need to find something to escape with. Turns out this is another glitch look

I can never finish the mission so I just went and killed Loches wife
