Full Version: How To Connect My Xbox To A Flatpanel

Hi,

I have a problem to get my modded pal XBox on a brandnew Asus 17" flatpanel.
I bought a X2VGA 2 device, but even with the changes from PAL to NTSC and many other settings, I couldn't get an image on my screen.

Today, I got my new order: a VGA to 3 YUV CINCH female adapter along with a component video/YUV cable for the XBox, but even this didn't work: I get a "no signal" message on the screen.

Please see my project to see what the meaning is: http://lunacade.blogspot.com/

I didn't find a straight answer in this forum yet....

Help me out please, I'm stuck! unsure.gif

That is one nice arcade mine is at xbmc.ckdvt.com/arcade

Anyways have you tried to connect your xbox to another ntsc screen or another vga compatible monitor? blink.gif blink.gif

I don't know why you are getting *no* display, but with the cable setup you are using (without the x2vga) if you *do* get a display, it will be tinted heavily green. component signal is different than RGB, I just went through this on my projector, and it requires a bios change to fix (either the modified ind-bios by junkmonkey or another vga-enabled bios).

I keep seeing people using VGA to componet adapters or wanting too... I have never seen this work with anything outside of video cards for PCs that have the feature built in to output component over the VGA port... people really get this working regularly?
War_Machine
howd u get the blue xbmc skin?

In essence, I am doing this.
VGA runs RGB, similar to component, but not compatible. If connected directly, it results in a heavy green tint over the whole screen. The XBOX hardware is *capable* of outputting in RGB, but MS never enabled the feature. Several people have made bioses that enable it. Currently I run XBOX w/ component out, with RCA > BNC adapters connected directly to the RGB input on my projector (same signal as vga, different connection), w/ a modified bios to output RGB, and it looks beautiful. It works in all modes, 480p, 720p, 1080i.

So you are going component to RGB, but not component to VGA? It just seems that a lot of people are mistaking the fact that an adapter exists to mean that it will work. May Component to VGA adapters I have seen actually bear a warning that they do not convert one signal type to another, but many don't.

You have a PJ with BNC connectors? Is it really old or medical grade or something?

Yes, component to RGB, but... RGB is the same signal as VGA, just a different connector. I have a VGA to BNC cable also to hook my computer up to the projector. The projector is an old Barco Data 808 (CRT projector). It is HUGE, but i picked it up for only $150 and it projects anywhere from 68.5" to 240" diagonal.

On a side note, I am currently working on a bios patcher to convert any xbox bios to a vga/rgb-enabled bios. cool.gif

ok i think i can answer your problem... i have a vga port on the back of my xbox... only 1 of the 3 monitors i have will display anything.. sucks you put that in there but i would start testing other monitors

and on the xbox rgb and vga are different.. all three jumpers are enabled to make rgb... and a mistake made in the diagram switch #1 is not supposed to be enabled for vga.. it will not work on vga with switch 1 enabled... i went through hell to figure this out

edit: this is important to you.. xbmc, dvdx, avalaunch and damn small linux DO NOT FREAKING WORK on a vga monitor with 720p and 1080i enabled

I have no idea what you are talking about with jumpers and switches. I'm just using a hd pack from walmart and some adapters from radio shack.

Thanks guys: I will test some of the methods, especially the VGA-enabled bios.

I don't have any CRT monitors anymore, just TFT screens and a 32" TFT TV.
Any of them are showing an image from the XBox trough the VGA connector.

Threadjack

Did you get that off the guy who was selling 2 of them on avsforum for cheap to anyone who would pick them up?

If so I hate you.

Actually for $150 I still hate you.

I think that might be the problem... just because the adapter from radio shack has component on one end and vga on the other does not mean it changes the signal from one type to another...

It's kind of like if I take a US plug and solder it onto a Euro plug you can then plug your US devices into a Euro plug. And they will still fry...

No, got it from a govt surplus auction. The adapters are component > BNC. The modified BIOS handles the signal change (outputting RGB instead of component).

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm not having any problem with my setup, it's beautiful. :-)

In fact, using a hacked vga-bios, the point is that your adaptor has a sync-seperator because most monitors just need RGBHV but not composite sync which is what the box normally creates. In my case, this is just what I would like to have, an adaptor from yuv to vga(rgbhv), with no transcoding, but I dunno where to get one...

And about the power connectors... in fact, many new power cables like for xbox, cell phones, shavers or whatever CAN BE CONNECTED to ANY power source, no matter you solder the new plug or use an adaptor (without a converter). Just check for a label "Input: 120-240V, 50-60Hz" (Else it might fry the thing anyway).
pimpmaul69
hey denus if you want to solve this real easy ill sell you an adapter i made for 30 buxx.. it has a pc speaker output and the complete vga mod with the lm1881 chip in it.. if you are interested let me know

@ pimpmaul69: I've sent you a PM.
Denus
The cable looks great, but do you have a version with a male vga-connector?
I will not be able to connect the female connector on my flatpanel.

...or I have to find a gender converter...
Denus
Oh wait: this cable is made to be connected on the VGA cable attached on the monitor...duh...
It's true that some CRT monitors have a non-removable vga cable, so it's clear why a female connector has been used.

No prob: I will manage.....

do you want one with a female end.. cause i can make it any way you like.. also i will make it the exact length you want it
Denus
No, I need a male vga connector (I have a female connector on the flatpanel), and a lenght of 50 cm ( +/- 20 inch) should be long enough.
On your picture, a female connector is used, that's why...
pimpmaul69
i meant male connecter.. sorry guess females are on my mind
irfan
you dp know that you can get male/female convertors pretty damn cheap, dont you?
pimpmaul69

That's actually a gender converter, as I mentioned before.
pimpmaul69

So if I could possibly buy one from u, would it work on a PAL Xbox connected to a 19" Flatscreen? So I could run games and XBMC in higher resolution? My Xbox is v1.0 or v1.1

Oh I see Denus is from Holland, so how did you pay pimpmaul69? As pimpmaul69 is mentioning dollars, I think that means he is living in the US wink.gif.

Denus, laat me dan weten als het werkt, ok? smile.gif
Denus
No problem with Paypal: you can convert euro's into dollars.

Spycon: Ik laat je weten hoe of wat, maar ik vrees het ergste...
irfan
ah i didnt see he was custom making them.. i thought it was jsut that one cable for sale...
pimpmaul69
i will make them for anyone who wants them..30 us dollars with the shipping included.. i accept paypal..
i make the cables with a male or female end per customers request..male end is for flatpanel monitors wich have a removable vga cable.. and if you look at ultimarc they are 25 plus shipping and their cables dont look anywhere as nice as mine.. so with shipping included i am quite a bit cheaper than them

Great. What you mean by removable vga cable and male/female? I have a flatpanel monitor who was a DVI output and VGA.

crt monitors have a vga cable that does not remove.. so i have to make a cable with a female 15 pin vga end on it.. but most flat panel monitors have a vga cable that comes off and if you wanna be able to plug my cable straight into the back of the monitor then i have to make a cable with a male 15 pin vga on the end

^^^ well not all CRTs .. just a lot of them.

Denus
@ pimpmaul69:
I received the cable: it's very well made.
Of course, I wasn't able yet to test it, but it should be fine, with the right hardware.

Thanks... smile.gif
redpacman
