so i finally received all my parts.

I will be putting Green LEDs in it, and a ECU (Extended Cooling Unit - runs the fans for 5 minutes after it's turned off)

i am assuming that the +5v (that i need for the ECU) is unswitched from this page: http://www.xboxchopshop.com/catalog/man_360_volts.php
QUOTE
Grounds and a 5v "unswitched" point can be found by the power supply plug. This 5v is on anytime the 360 is plugged in, and is not switched by the 360 power.

IPB Image

The 5v can be found on this pic i made:
IPB Image

I might replace the fans with different ones at a later date, but i have no complaints with the current ones.

OK!

First i want to all of you to never strip wire using your teeth, as i kinda did a little damage to mine:
IPB Image

Step 1:
get your intercooler!
IPB Image

Step 2:
open up the power area! Cut off the 2 connections and carve some plastic off the 5v wire!
IPB ImageIPB Image

Step 3:
get a 5 LED Lazer LED (i'm using 2 of them)
IPB Image

Step 4:
Open it up!
IPB Image
sorry, the chrome reflects the flash. There is a lot of hot glue in there, so it might not want to come apart.

Step 5:
take all the chrome off - might be hard with all the hot glue! (repeat steps 3 - 5 on the second LED)
IPB Image

Step 6:
get your ECS!
IPB ImageIPB Image

Step 7:
get the power cord for the ECS and cut it off!

more comming soon.

i need to get some heatshrink!

Right, but he can use all that chrome he's strippin off the LED placeholder device to have a chrome tooth. Forget gold and platiunum grills; it's all about the chrome, baby!

hahaha word cool.gif

Keep up the good work Morlok8k!

Looks nice. Good tutorial so far. Keep it updated!!
Sloppy Fat Dump
BAH! I would never cut open my lazer LEDs! Those things are expensive tongue.gif . Can't wait to see how this turns out. You might want to get that intercooler painted. Maybe some sick decals, idk. Keep up the good work.

P.S.

[ebonics]Yo man, jo grill is hecka f'd up. Do what dat lil dude said above and chrome up that mug.[/ebonics]
Morlok8k
ok.

step 8:
after all the wires are stripped, connect all ground wires together. connect the +5v wire. connect the wire going to the fans and the output of the ECU together. then connect all other +12v wires together.
IPB Image
this is a quick test (all +12v together, so when the ECU is running the LEDs are dim - not what i wanted.) by connecting it to my PC via molex connector before i soldered it together and put electrical tape on (i didn't have any heatshrink like i thought i did).

@Sloppy Fat Dump:
I dont know where you got your Lazer LEDs, but i paid $5 each at Directron.com
Staple
cool idea im not a fan of taped connections weathe is scotch or electrical lmfao

gj 5 bux for 5 LEDS WOW

well that was a quick test i had for about 5 minutes. so scotch tape was fine for that. i now have high quality electrical tape over them.

is that "WOW" a "wow good deal!" or "wow expensive!"? cause ive seen these lazer LEDs for $10

New pictures soon, as it is completed!
sk8adio
nice u went from scoth tape to elctrical

should solder them up
[-elmo-]
Looks good, update with some finished pics.
manhunt009
nice job dude.

hey , I got a question guys can I put Lazer LEDs in the HDD?

Chrome rules!

but i dont know if i want a chrome cap for my tooth. I'll probably get ceramic / tooth color

they are soldered (inside the electrical tape)

thanks, and to answer your question: no. Lazer LEDs run off of 12v power, and the HDD only has 5v power.
if you did hook up the 5-LED Lazer LED thing to a 5v source, 3 LEDs would be very dim, and 2 would be off completly. i know as i tried it.

I've taken the pictures and am currently uploading them. they will be here soon.
Morlok8k
step 9:
now that it's wired correctly, solder it up, and tape or heatshrink the connections
Since i accidently deleted the photos of this, this crappy diagram will have to do:
IPB Image

step 10:
Put it all back together! Hot Glue the Lazer LEDs to the sides of the case, and put the white foam strips back in place.
IPB Image
IPB Image
IPB Image

Also, make a small hole just big enough on the side or in the middle so that the wires going to the ECU will fit.

step 11:
once everything is done, party time!

Note: the green is much richer than the seagreen in the photos - think LED traffic light green (if youve seen those LED traffic lights)

Nice. The diagram is kinda hard to read, but the finished project looks dope. Nice work.

Wow, great job! biggrin.gif

Does your tooth still hurt?

I am thinking about trying this now, Could you get some easier diagrams to read.

its a pretty easy mod, but i dont know.. $15-20 or so.

but you should be able to do this. its pretty simple, i only had 4 solder points since everything is parellel.

hey get better air flow if you cut out the grill.. its so restricting.

Airflow and overheating have never been a problem for me, even without the intercooler. i got the intercooler just to put LEDs in it. Putting the Extended Cooling Unit in was just an idea i got while browsing an online store.

If i can find some 50mm grills, I might cut it out, but if not, oh well. Not a big deal.

becides, i like to be original.

I'm debating buying a Pelican fan stand, modding it, and hookin it up to my ECU (as it has 2 fan ports), but that would require buying a Pelican product.

seeing that picture was the reason i bought an intercooler.

What is that white thing on the side of the intercooler?

Would that mean that the Pelican fan stand would run off the xbox 360 power, or the USB power? It originally runs off of the USB power provided by the 360.

I need it to run off the Xbox's origanal power source NOT the USB power, thats why I ask.

i said i'd be hooking it up to my ECU, which runs off of the 360's power.

Yeah but the USB power or the power cable power? I thought maybe the pelican would still be USB powered and the ECU would just turn it off somehow.

I only see three solder points in this diagram, everything that is going to the grey wire (low/ground), everything going to the white wire (High/12v), and the 5v wire running from the ECU. Where is the fourth solder point?

- Thank You
SupremeWarlord
The only thing I can see is that maybe the 12v wire coming out of the top of the ECU is going to a different 12v power source than the 12v wires coming out of the LED's and the bottom of the ECU.

Edit: Oh, I see now, the switch is wired to the top of the ECU and then the ECU is wired to the xbox switch afterwards. biggrin.gif I didn't realize that the white 12v wire was going to remain seperated.

- Thank You

So from what I see the fans will run at 17v with that ESC? Or is that extra 5v completly for LED's and the esc is for slowthe fans?

no, the ECU runs the fans at 5v for a couple of minutes after the 360 is turned off. (to remove heat that normally builds up after the fans turn off resulting in a longer lifespan) other wise the fans run at 12v. (and if you merge a 12v and a 5v line together you get a 7v line or something) the LEDs only run at 12v.

Nice mod. One thing I was wondering, if I wanted to replace the intercooler fans with something quieter but just as powerful, or if one of the fans died or got noisy and needed replacing, could I do that without cutting wires?

no, you would need to cut wires, strip them, and solder the new wires together. if you replace one fan i would suggust replacing them all.

i'm thinking of doing that myself cause one of my fans has recently developed an occasional high pitched "whir" to it.

I've got the same thing - one of my fans makes a slight whir the 360's turned on from cold, but seems to go away after about a minute.

So can the fans be replaced in one go, without soldering? With, for example, the interconnected 'Whisper' fans? Even those are usually intended for the inside of a 360?
chuckthefuk
if you cant solder.. then just wrap the wires and tape them off..

well, mine is constant unless i hit that fan to knock it back in its tracks.

i dont think the whisper fans would fit in the intercooler. it needs to be 50mm. I'm personally thinking of buying two of these, wiring 3 of them together in parallel and having a spare if one goes bad. there are only $3.95 per pair. these are the exact same size as the stock fans. i cant find any stats for them though.

yea, or crimp them or heatshrink them - if you have the parts.
soldering is best though.

Instead of adding leds..could u just replcae the fans with led fans? what size are the faNS in the ic?
Lethal_NFS
Well its a pretty cool idea that you made happen but I feel kind of bad that you did all that work on an external fan that really doesnt do anything to help your temps. I would have liked to see some internal modding myself but I am not taking away from your work. Its always cool to see an idea become reality.

thats what i originally wanted to do - add LED fans. they dont make them in that size - 50mm

actually the fans work very well - without it the 360 will blow noticilby hot air out, but with the intercooler the air comming out is barely above room temperature.

i have already modded my XSATA. I wanted to add an activity light to it but i dont think i can without opening up the harddrive case.
My next step is to add the SickMod's LED Fader 360 and the Talismoon Fan (green)
paqi
Morlok8k,

Is it possible to install 70 or 80mm fans in the intercooler and maybe only have 2 of them instead of 3?

Jeppe
Morlok8k
Inside you might possibly get a 60-70mm fan to fit, - but it would not fit like the stock fans. modifications to the fan and/or the intercooler would need to be done. 80mm - no. of course you could always hook them up to the outside of the intercooler, but that wouldnt look so nice.
