like everquest and world of warcraft you have to play online and pay the monthly fee.
also, the characters are stored server side, so there will not be any type of workaround. your only hope is if someone finds a way to make rogue servers like they do with WoW. from what i hear your not missing out on that much at least.
Yeah, FFXI f@ckin sucks. I haven't played it since 2 days after I bought it. What a waste of money
