So I've just installed Windows Vista Beta 2 on my main machine, and believe me, I know I can't expect everything to work.
But there are things I can live with, and things I can't.

One of the things I can't is not being able to access the shared folders on my Xbox through XBMC. I'm using a build of XBMC from earlier in the month, and it has been great for me.

After installing Vista x64, I tried setting up sharing. Got things set up the way they should be, but couldn't access my shares even from another XP machine.
Played around, and I'm now able to access all my shared folders on the Vista box on the other two computers on my network, yet completely unable to access them with my Xbox!!

I had the same problem when I tried running Windows Pro X64 edition, so I don't know if the 64-bit architechture is the problem, or what... But if ANYONE knows anything that could help, please reply!

Thanks in advance.

are you just browsing to the computer, or do you have bookmarks setup in your xboxmediacenter.xml file?
markie32
i had the same prob with beta 2, x32 could browse pc - pc but not xbox - pc just kept asking for a username/password although there was not one set on the pc, strange

Same problem here. I can access from other xp machines, but not from my xbox. I did get xp x64 to work though. I went to where you join a domain, but joined the workgroup that I was already in instead. After a restart, it worked. I haven't found a way to do that in vista though.

XBMC -> VISTA does not work. It has been confirmed by multiple people in this forum. At the present time there is no fix. Your best bet is to hope that there will be better support in the final release. Remember that it is a beta product.
citizin
i found out that the smb with vista didn't work after i installed vista 2. A work around is to install the ccx steam, and the service to your services and set up the share, then just edit the sources. works fine for me after that.
elupus
it wont work untill samba supports vista clients.. nothing we can do about it sadly. there is a bug report on samba.org about it.
Azin
Theres a Fix to this.. Download ccXstream Server..
http://ccxgui.xboxmediacenter.de/

Works for me, hard to get use to it but it dose the trick pop.gif
UchihaZephyr
ccxgui works like a charm. thanks.

Hi,
I had the same trouble, running a version of XBMC at least 6 months old, and Vista Beta 2 x86 (32bit) but after searching high and low, I noticed that a few people had reported success using a program called ccXstream (h**p://ccxgui.xboxmediacenter.de/download.html)

I downloaded v.1.41, installed it, added a couple of shares, and strated the service. I then edited the following lines in both the <video> and <music> section of XboxMediaCenter.xml:

<bookmark>
<name>XNS Network Share 2</name>
<path>xns://192.168.100.3:1400/</path>
</bookmark>
<bookmark>
<name>XBMSP Network Share 2</name>
<path>xbms://192.168.100.3:1400/</path>
</bookmark>

Obviously, change 192.168.100.3 to be the same IP as your computer. I can't remember which of the bookmarks (XNS or XBMS) worked, but one of them definately did. There was an autodiscover bookmark entry for XBMS already in my XboxMediaCenter.xml file, which when selected in XBMC (with ccXstream running on my computer), found my shared folders, and could access them. Sorry for the poor description, but I hope it makes some sense to you.

use windows media connect instead.. works just fine in Vista X64

Ok, after some major tweaking, I got XBMC to communicate with Vista SMB shares.

Using Vista B2 build 5472.5, and a fairly recent T3CH XBMC build

I did it by editing my local security policy, among other things. I made a bunch of changes, all of which will make your Vista machine less secure, so be forewarned.

Here's what I did:

1) Shared folder containing files.
2) Made sure folder had "everyone" added as read, list, and execute permission to files
3) Checked share permissions, made sure that "everyone" had read permission to share.

4) Open a command prompt (cmd.exe), type mmc and hit <enter>
5) Vista will prompt for elevated security access for MMC, allow it.
6) When MMC loads, under file, select "Add or Remove Snap-In".
7) From the list of Snap-Ins, highlight "Group Policy Object Editor", hit "add".
8) A dialog box will appear, pick "Local Computer".
9) Hit 'OK'. You now should be back at the MMC panel
10) In the explorer pane, expand "Console Root" -> "Local Computer Policy" -> "Computer Configuration" -> "Windows Settings" -> "Security Settings" ->
"Local Policies". Click on "Security Options" under "Local Policies".
11) Under "Security Options", I made the following Changes:

Network access: Allow anonymous SID/name translation: Change to Enable
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts - Change to Disabled
Network access: Do not allow anonymous enumeration of SAM accounts and shares - Change to Disabled
Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users - Change to Enable
Network access: Restrict anonymous access to Named Pipes and Shares - Change to Disabled
Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously - I added my root share name here
Network access: LAN Manager authentication level - Change to LM & NTLM, send NTLMv2 if negotiated

12) Close MMC.
13) open up command prompt (cmd.exe) again.
14) type GPUpdate /force
15) Reboot PC and XBMC

This is what worked for me - you may need to do less or more for yourself, but things are working ok for me now. XBMC still prompts for a password every now and then, however if I leave them blank, it will pass through ok.

What this setting set to initially?
Network access: LAN Manager authentication level

I think that might be the only change needed.
LadyEowyn
I don't know if this is relevant, but I had some other sharing probs and it was solved by connecting to the pc's ip address in stead of smb name.
ebob9
The LAN Manager is set to NTLMv2 only, if I remember right.

I forgot to mention I disabled Windows Firewall as well.

--ebob9
elupus
that'd be the case then. samba sends invalid ntlmv2 authentication, and since default is not to fallback to the simpler ntlm or lm systems, authentication fails.

So there is differences in the embedded security in vista. thats actually a good thing. I had some
of the same problem when running 2003 server.

I have some experience in netowrking with 2000,2003 server and xp when it comes to sharing.

My nr1 tip for getting samba to work is to share with the IP adress. Always use the ipadress
instead of the DNS computer name.

Hey Everyone,

This is my first post here, ended up registering just because of this issue with Vista.

My vista machine is connected to an Active Directory domain, and i had a specific account which i used just for the xbox. The various machines which shared resources to the xbox would assign the xbox user account share permissions so the xbox was able to browse resources from the "Workgroup" link in "My Files".

Attempting the do the same with the Vista machine has resulted in many password prompts and the "NT_STATUS_NOT_A_DIRECTORY" error come up onto the screen.

I attempted to make the changes to the local security policy, except for the:

"Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously - I added my root share name here"

Which I didn't do as there were many shares to add. Incidentally, i am about to browse the contents of some of the directories (i have reset permissions on these all directoires to make sure the xbox user object has read, execute and list permissions).

I am using Vista RC1 (5600) 32bit. If anyone has any ideas about how to get Vista to allow XBMC to access a share based on a certain username please respond. Thanks

Regards
J

I only edited the following to get my Xbox to connect to my Vista,

Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users - Change to Enable
Network access: Shares that can be accessed anonymously - I put in my computer name here
Network access: LAN Manager authentication level - Change to LM & NTLM, send NTLMv2 if negotiated

Xbox is now working with vista

Thanks for the help guys.

I cannot find "Group Policy Object Editor" in MMC. Why is this?

Running the 32 bit home premium, but just checked with a friend of mine if he could find it. He couldn't even though he's running 64 bit.

Why dous not "Group Policy Object Editor" appear in the list?

if you can't find it, open CMD and type gpedit.msc - this will take you directly to the snap in,

I followed Ebob's suggestion, but it didn't work until I changed Network Security:lan manager authentication level to Send NTLMv2 response only.

it works fine - the only thing I cant do is browse the Workgroup.

I cannot get this thing to work. I must be stupid.

Here's my configs.

I'm using crossover cable.

Network on XBOX:
IP adress: 192.168.2.3
Netmask: 255.255.255.0

Network on PC:
IP adress: 192.168.2.2
Netmask: 255.255.255.0

I have shared 3 folders and given them the proper rights.
I have disabled firewall.
I have followed the guide given in this thread.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate X86

When trying to enter my workgroup SMB Network from XBOX, I'm getting this error:
"Workgroup Not Found"

The Pc Workgroup: MSHOME
The XBOX Console: MSHOME

Can someone please assist me in getting this thing to work? I'm losing my mind over this problem....
asynchronice
I am experiencing similiar problems of the previous post with the intermittent "NT_STATUS_NOT_A_DIRECTORY" errors when navigating through share. Some files actually open and play for a few moments, then cut back to the menu. I am running Vista RTM 64 with aforementioned policies in place, in a variety of different combinations but to no avail. Is this simply just not going to work ?

One thing I did notice was that under "Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center " the default view shows a list of options, and under 'Sharing and Discovery > Public Folder Sharing' it says 'on (read only, password required); however there is no option to turn the password portion off. Any know how to take care of that ?

just update to a newer build and restore vista's default settings. it's fix asfar as I know.
Qballjos
Well for me it's working just fine with windows vista ultimate x64;

right click computer select properties you will get the System screen.

next to your computer name click change settings and you will get the system properties screen..

click network ID and you will get a screen that asks you wat network you want to set up.

select the top one a company network.

next screen select a network without a domain.

enter a networkname and press next.

then you'll have to reboot your computer.

When vista has rebooted you need to create an extra user acount.

open the startmenu en click on your user icon on the top.

on the new screen select manage a other acount.

then select create a new acount; I used xbox as acount name and password.

now al we have to do is share a folder.

go to the folder you want to share and select properties.

now slect the tab sharing.

now click the button sharing.....

now set sharing active for everyone.

Oke now we are done with vista next the xbmc.

boot and open XBMC.

in XBMC go to settings.

now go to network.

select SMB and there you enter the username and pasword you used for the acount you created on the pc.

and now we are al done.

I hope you guys can use this have fun greetz Qballjos

This is great!!

Finally i can access my computer again..
ebob, you've just made my day biggrin.gif

Followed ebob's instructions and my video streaming is working with smb shares - also changed the share names back to ipadress rather than machine name.

What I have lost though is internet access through the box. No weather or RSS feeds anymore ? Any idea if one of the settings needs to go back to what it was ?
lambasteR
ignore my last post - internet is now working fine.

my old xbmc didnt work with vista x64
this version works XBMC-SVN_2007-03-04_rev8014-T3CH
mx416
I upgraded to the newest xbmc and can connect fine, wouldn't work with an older version i had. I didn't have to change any settings in vista either
HypnotiX
thats odd, i never had this problem ever since i first installed vista not too too long ago. XBOX sees and goes into every directory and shows all files and plays all. Don't know man?
thombleached
Sorry for mentioning this elsewhere, but I guess here seems more appropriate. heres my problem.

installed vista (clean install) then had the same issues as others with smb so I upgraded to the latest t3ch build and all seemed fine,
then I noticed if my network hadn't done much in awhile (i.e no other pc had connected to it in 20 minutes or so) then xbmc could not find the workgroup and throws up the 'workgroup not found' error.

At present the only way to get xbmc to access my workgroup shares is to fire up my laptop and browse my vista shares, then magically xbmc see's my mshome network.

Any ideas much apreciated, I'm tearing my hair out!

Had a similar issue myself with vista and samba sharing and found this and it solved my problem. I hope it helps.

"Okay, I eventually found the problem. So for anyone unable to connect to samba shares (this probably applies to linux too), do the following on Vista:

Click "Start -> Run." Then, type in the Run field: "secpol.msc." That will bring you to Vista's security policy system. Once there, use "Go to: Local Policies > Security Options" and then find "Network Security: LAN Manager" authentication level. Once there, change the Setting from "Send NTLMv2 response only" to "Send LM & NTLM -- use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated."

hey justmed, thanks for the help, but yeah I tried all of the local security options to try and fix this, but to no avail, cheers anyway
UB6_IB9
what have they changed in the new version of xbmc to get it to work with vista? i just want to know because i really dont like the new versions of vista because the "music" part has really gone downhill and i would like to change it so i can connect with my older (2.01 stable) version.

I have done everything in the above post and i is still having probs. Before when i clicked on my netowrk on the xbox it would ask for a password, now i can go into the vista pc and see all my shares but when i click on a file it asks for a password. I typed in anything and eventually goe through to a .avi file and when i clicked on that it asked for user name password so i again put anything in and then it tells my HN_STRUCTURE_NOT_A_DIRECTORY or words to that affect? can anyone help please!!!!!!! by the way its vista 32 bit if that makes any difference.
Bloodfin
I dont get it. I have done everything with the CMD people say and none of it works. The gpedit.msc is not valid and the snap in idea, well the snap in that is explained dont exist. I did everything I could, I just got this new PC with Vista and Vista sucks period. With XP it was so easy.

How do you honestly get this to work?

Like I siad I did this with XP and it took about five minutes if that to set up and start watching a movie from PC to XBMC and I never got what seems to e a anoying screen name and password prompt and I never had to do anything with XBMC. I just clicked on work group ( smb ) network found my computer and found the file I wanted!
