Since a master password has most likely never been set to your hard drive, you may be able to use
HDD Unlock to unlock the drive.
If that is unsuccessful, you would have to install a modchip and new hard drive in the Xbox to have it working again.
If you would want to remove the modchip (to keep the Xbox softmodded), you'd also have to obtain the Xbox's EEPROM, and lock the new hard drive using the EEPROM.

No, there isn't a program that can do this.
Using HDD Unlock is most likely the only way to unlock your hard drive. If your hard drive is the stock hard drive, HDD Unlock can unlock it for free.

HDD Unlock will unlock hard drives under 20 GB in size for no cost.
Otherwise, if you had a larger hard drive, HDD Unlock would have required you to purchase a hard drive size-dependent code.

Actually, no, it's not.
HDD Unlock has the ability to disable a hard drive lock, even if you don't know the password, but for 'hdunlock.exe', you need to know the password the drive was locked with.

is hdunlock.bat (used in dos)the same as hdunlock.exe?

No, it's not.
Since the password that your hard drive was locked with is unknown, you need to try using
HDD Unlock to unlock the drive. HDD Unlock is able to defeat the lock whether or not you know the unlock password.

Apparently, HDD Unlock was able to unlock drives under 20 GB in size only up to a day or two ago.
But, paying $2.97 to unlock your hard drive will be less money than purchasing a modchip and a new hard drive.

I'm not aware of any free hard drive unlocking programs.
HDD Unlock was the first one, that I've seen, that would unlock an Xbox hard drive for free.

so could installing new firmware for my harddrive (seagate model ST310014ACE) get ride of the password? or is that just a complete waste of time?

No, if you wouldn't mind building
this schematic, you could still unlock your drive.

No, besides building the schematic and using HDD Unlock, there is probably no free way to unlock your hard drive.

I was a big fan of HDD Unloack when it was in beta cause it unlocked a 120 GB hard drive after i had issues with XBHDM and corrupt eeproms. It was also for free then

Now im wondering if anyone has or would be able to find a program that unlocks a hdd without the password for free. I know it sounds stingy but hey im sure others wont mind me asking when they have similar problems. THANKS HDD UNLOCK!!!
