I recently bought a pioneer 111d drive from newegg and the drive burned dl discs just fine for a while but recently its been giving me power calibration errors on some of the verbatim discs in the spindle of 20 that i have. I am stuck with about 5-6 discs that will not burn due to the error..is this the cause of defective media or the drive?

What firmware revision on the burner? Do you have the Pioneer set as master (like most burners it has an inferriority complex

). What software? We need more info.

1.29, burner is set to master and it gives me power calibration errors with both clonecd and imgburn.

Dunno, but I had the same problem a while ago. The drive was just dying (laser?). I had those errors on every other disc I did. Eventually it wouldnt even recognize DVD+R.
Got a new one, problems went away. At less than 40$ a pop, who cares.
*it was a DVR-110D, but same errors left and right.

I would try flashing it to the latest Dangerous Brother's firmware to see if that won't fix it. If not then I agree that your Pioneer is probably dying. How does it work for single layer media?

I've had this experience for a few years using pioneer burners. First thing update firmware on drive, 2nd uninstall drive completly and reinstall, 3rd make sure your dont have too many resources open in the back- ground, 4th when this happens shut down pc and reboot 5th make sure you use good media verbatims. Sometimes you need to uninstall other rom drives, devices and programs. They run flawlessly for weeks then bang it happens, you cop a couple of bad power calibration errors in a row.
cheers
