Columbus Day should be taken off the list of holidays. But, we should still get the day off.
From now on Columbus Day will be known as Overrated Historical Figures Day. Its a free holiday.
I think you'd better start with Martin Luther King day first then. Celebrating a man that did nothing but preach advancement of a single race under the guise of "peace", but rather spawning hate and racism is moronical. Every time we observe that holiday and "black history month" we draw the line between races and further distance one race from the other. We'd do better to skip all of that so that eventually we could see each other as "people" rather than "white" people or "black" people.
Think about how you were taught the history of the U.S. England sent the settlers over here to enrich their imports and expand their territory. The settlers nearly starved to death because they were forced to come but didn't know how to survive. We celebrate Thanksgiving because it shows they persevered the hardships and reaped the rewards. (Thanks to the native Americans who were later tortured. Thanks a lot guys. You're the REAL race who has a right to be pissed at the white man.)
We celebrate our hardships because we realize that's just what it took to get where we are today. In Black history they had to go through slavery to choke on our sweet air of freedom today. We don't celebrate it as such. We make it out to be so negative that we hate each other and can't get along because of it.
This would be where to start if we're getting rid of Holidays. Leave Columbus day alone.
