Full Version: Psp Or Ds-x?

So, I was originally looking at getting a DS-X for my DS, but remembered that PSPs can do much of what DS has to offer home-brew wise.

So, the obvious question to this thread is: Would you recommend a DS-X flash cart or a PSP for my homebrew needs?

My main purpose for wanting one of these is portable emulation (mostly SNES, but Genesis and NES, too), as a portable mp3 player, and MAYBE movies, but other neat gadgets would be used, too.

Here's what I see in each:

DS-X
Pros:
-Cheaper
-More stable (or so it seems to me)
-Nothing permanant to the system
-Instant messaging (ok, I'm not sure if the PSP has like AIM or MSN messenger programs for it)

Cons:
-Homebrew not as extensive
-Emulators not as reliable
-Only 512 MB of memory

PSP
Pros:
-Big-ass screen
-As much memory as you can buy
-More stable/in-depth homebrew (emulators)

Cons:
-More expensive (not too big a deal, not TOO expensive)
-More likely to blow the system with homebrew

Basically, I'm only worried about 1) how well emulation works and 2) how likely I am to screw up my system. I don't plan on playing any actual PSP games (they all blow). Oh, and if you could point me in the direction of like, a PSP homebrew central site or something, that'd be pretty cool, too. tongue.gif

If you are interested in homebrew and playing old clasics as well as listening to mp3's and watching movies I think you should give the gp2x a whirl.

It costs around £100, takes the dirt cheap SD cards and you can connect it to your TV.

The DS-X isn't being sold yet. Wait for it. A review was just put up today on gbatemp.net.

PSP is probably better for multimedia though. Although, Moonshell allegedly runs on the DS-X which is pretty good. DS-X plays mp3s natively, you only need Moonshell for movies and pictures.

I like NDS better for my needs. Nintendos games are the best.

Oh... my...
This is amazing! Why haven't I heard of it before??
My only concern is this: How stable/compatable are most of the emulators? (SNES, Genesis, and NES especially, if you know)

And it uses AAs. Meh. Rechargables, I guess. The DS spoiled me.

Yeah, dude, the DS-X came out last Thursday.

And yeah, I realize the DS has better commercial games. That's why I currently own a DS and not a PSP. I'm just looking for something for music and emulation now.

If you already have the DS then get the DS-X. No need to spend all the extra money.

Which store has 1?
IBBIAZ
Well, it's expensive already at $125. Might as well get something that can do everything else I need. Plus, DS emulators are hardly compatable at all - why I looked to the PSP in the first place.

You can find a dealer for the DS-X at the site:

From what I have seen and played the gp2x plays snes, gameboy and megadrive games with ease. Also it can play psx games but I have not seen them in action so buyer beware.

It also plays divx movies and I think you can read pdf's on the go but I have not tried as this feature does not interest me. Rechargeable batt's are a must but you need to get good quality battery's otherwise your experience my be short lived. I think the manufactures I releasing a rechargeable battery pack in the near future.

If you check the gp2x forum and file list they will be able to give you more info than I can ATM.

Depends, I have my psp with tons of homebrew on it, and is great for any emulation except you might have trouble with N64 emu and the gba. Gba emu is only trouble because of obtaining the illegal bios, and the n64 is compatible with anything. Otherwise it's nice, and I use the Snes emu mostly which has complete button remapping, autosave every x minutes, and a few other things. The only thing you should be worried about is anything BUT emulators. Also, read extensively on every amount of info you can get for the installation and stuff and comprehend it, it's easy, just takes a little investigation. That's only if you choose psp. (Which i had anyways)

BTW, the gp2x website isn't showing.
