the fans spin too slow and the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU is not enough to make contact which leaves hotspots on teh chips in turn overheating the chips.

I just played three hours of Gears of war and then watched the bonus dvd with no problems.

my guess is that GoW is a little more CPU/GPU intensive than any other game to date, and as xpert said, they cheaped out on my thermal paste so i pretty much fried it... console manuf. date is over a year too, so no warranty.

ahah this horse shit started happening to me on sunday... two days before gears was released... and this is my second console... so now im on number three and using all my originals because the new drive can't be firmware modded... but i went and spent the money on another year warranty witch you can buy each year as long as you bought one from the previous year ( thank god for EBGAMES) and bought a intercooler anything else i should do ? i cut the metal case shielding from the back of my last console and that didn't help with cooling you think intercooler will do fine? or should i go get that artic cool stuff and put it on the gpu and cpu? do i have to clean the old off and then put the new on

I've noticed that sometimes the highly graphic games shut down the fan. This has happened on mine while playing GRAW, PGR3, and Dead Rising. The odd thing is that it is the games with weak graphics that freeze it, Bomberman and Test Drive.
ILLusions0fGrander
Nov 9 2006, 07:12 AM
i played GRAW, Dead Rising, Test Drive, and PGR3, and many others.. never had this problem. it literally happened about 10 seconds into where it started the actual gameplay, for some reason just couldnt handle it.
i wouldnt mind getting a new box from MS, but they wont do it im sure... even though they built a faulty box, shipped me another faulty box that just now breaks after no signs of stress for months.

Is 360 standing on the small side (dvd loading from the side) or the big side (dvd loading from above)?

kage360 and i have been playing syslink coop for 14 hours straight and no probs, my 360 runs no warmer than usual.

horizontal position, always.
but yeah, R.I.P number 2. my number three never gets its ethernet cable plugged in because of its DVD drives FW, but before i realized it cooked my system, i tried GoW in that 360, and it ran fine.
i think before playing it anymore ill add the arctic silver i have left over from my PC CPU, and get a decent fan.
wonder how many other peoples 360's die out... i know ive read a few others on maxconsole and gamefaqs.
for my sake maybe it will be pretty common, common enough for me to get it replaced free/

Bummer.
Did you try it without the hard drive or the 360 on another television? What about in standard def?

I notice that my 360 gets a LOT warmer when horizontal. I dislike the vertical but have it standing so that the heat can get away from the bottom of the box.
You could try that but I suspect it's fried anyway :-(

Guys, this issue ou are all having has nothing to do with Gears of War or any other game. It is the Fall Update that was released by M$.
Check out this site for the official complaint post on xbox.com
http://forums.xbox.com/1/7864073/ShowPost.aspx#7864073There are literally THOUSANDS of 360's out there now that are dead because of this crap.
My thought: Could this have been an inside job by a secret $ony or N!ntendo lover working for M$ to sabotage them just before the release of the biggest next-gen console ever, or its little friend (Wii)??

just being skeptical...i have a launch day 360...opened it up flashed the firmware. about to go buy NFS:C and GOW....i havent applied the Fall Update....but if my 360 crashes due to the games, what can i do?
standing in the vertical position, plenty of room for ventillation, even keep a fan blowing towards it.

I was just about to open my console to put in a whisper fan but I think I'll hold off now untill Gears of Wars is released.
I have had problems with gamerpoints not counting but no freezing on the 3 games I own yet.

heh.. gears of war is out, some people have had it since wednesday i believe.
maybe you meant wait until you buy the game.
anyways.. ive seen a great majority of my friends list playing this game for 2 days straight, 3 days striaght, whatever... all working fine.
im guessing, my console was just an older model (oct 2005) and was just a dud, and it took gears of wars graphics to put a full load on the CPU, heating it up and cooking it.
games pretty good though.. got gears of war from EB, NFS and FEAR from gamefly and Project 8 and Call of Duty 3 today with my monthly free blockbuster coupons, so its going to be a good month of gaming id say.
thanks for all the input, and xpert for pointing out what most likely caused it.

I have the hitachi drive flashed with 4.2 post fall update and when i put the original copy of GOW i get an error screen that says to play this disc, put it in an Xvox 360 console. In my friends xbox that has a samsung drive flashed with 4.2 without fall update and original plays fine. on the hitachi tony hawk 8 plays fine original havent made back up yet cod 3 backup and original both play fine so the error could be caused by the fall update I got another samsung flashed with 4.2 post fall update but im still stuck on the e66 error b/c im having trouble flashing back. called microsoft just for the hell of it they said they would replace e66 xbox free of charge but im afraid they may find that the dvd drive has been flashed seal looks untouched so who knows.

Well I got GoW today and started the game. Everything was fine til I signed on xbox live when it ask that I need to download a patch. I downloaded and install it. Now my xbox freezes about every time it boots up. I can't even play my old games now. The sad this is, it is out of warrnty and it also been modded (window, painted, leds). I hate microsoft for this.

its pretty sad how poorly this system was designed. they rushed this thing to market and we're all paying the price. MS should have stopped all production and redesigned this pig
i've had the 3 lights of death once, but im attributing that to me moving the system around in my wall unit and perhaps the video plug was loose i walked away after watching GOW load and when i returned it was sitting idle with those 3 lights flashing at me.
i then shut the machine down, again rechecked the connection in the back and i unplugged the video cord and reattached it and it seems to work fine. although I haven't played the thing for more than 30 minutes since. i hope this isn't the begging of this thing failing. i do have an intercooler, for what it's worth.
i know several people that have had their systems effed up right from the start and i almost changed my mind and waited for the PS3 - but i couldn't stomach the PS2 relative to the original XBox.
what MS needs is some mass press on this problem and then they'll do something about it. i can't believe they're backing this system.
anyway those of you that now have a pooched system that you're unable to return, i'm sorry to hear it.
are we really to believe it was the fall updatE?

Yes. Unforunately the 360's drive has to spin at about 12x I think when playing a game. It isn't the fans, they always stay at a constant RPM no matter what. The reason its quiet on the dashboard is because the drive isn't spinning because a game isn't being played.
If you play a demo, you'll notice that the console makes the same amount of noise as when on the dashboard because the DVD drive isn't spinning.
About the Gears graphic glitching. Mine's fine, I get the odd hickup sometimes in fmv sequences but thats it so far.

Hey,
Our launch day 360 has been working fine. Fall update, still fine. Since we first played GOW, the 360 has not worked right. The TV will just come up with "Unsupported Mode" when turning the Xbox on 99% of the time.
Even when we hook the standard RCA cable up, the screen is scrambled or black.
If we do get the 360 to launch, GOW will play OK until we turn the Xbox off then it is a crap shoot as to whether we will get video or not. Picked up the HD-DVD today and can't get it to play cuz I can't get the frikken 360 to work.
Will be calling MS.

Hey,
Guess I can't edit my own posts.
After talking to MS for over a half an hour they decided we should send it in.
It took forever to get them to understand that we can't put in GOW disc and get an update to fix it because we can't see anything on the screen.
They are sending a box and said it could take three weeks for the entire fix/replace/return process.
We have the extended warranty through MS, does anyone know if they send a different 360 do we have to let them know the new serial number or are they bright enough to know that they replaced it and it is different?
