PS3 Video 9 is a free video conversion application developed by Red Kawa. It allows you to convert your computer video files (like avi, divx, mpeg, etc.) into the specific video formats that are playable on the PlayStation 3.

PS3 Video 9 can also be combined with Videora, another software application, and together they can let you automatically download and convert video for your PlayStation 3 using BitTorrent and RSS technology.

It seems $ony hates XVID/DIVX as much as M$ does.

Also got a call to day from my Gamestop. P$3 allocations are being cut. Here comes the shortage!!!!!

allocations are bing cut because larger retailers are getting more.

We already knew it wouldn't support xvid/divx out of the box, but it does support h.264/MP4/Mpeg-2/etc out of the box. Plus once you install Linux you can play whatever codecs linux supports.

No big deal.

Sony put his format as a "native" one.
Since you can run Linux with PS3 you'll be able to shoot VLC, and this means that almost format can be supported.
Anyway a lot of people is shifting to h.264 due to the better quality and compression rate.

Plus, this Video 9 format seems to be expecially designed for streaming media and if it's open for anyone it only means a "plus".
Get real, there are lots of formats and versions, Sony is unwilling to go after each codec (expecially not "market" ones), so they just put in reference ones.
