Game deals turn IBM into winner

No matter whether Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony wins the video-game console war, there already is one huge victor: IBM, which designed and makes the microprocessors for all three units.

Not very long ago, some analysts were suggesting that IBM sell its microelectronics division, which produces processors for IBM servers and a wide range of other devices, including automotive and telecommunications gear.

Now, because of the video-game deals, IBM is expected to see about $3.7 billion in sales of chips and associated design services this year, up from $2.9 billion last year and $2.5 billion in 2004. Analysts estimate the unit is profitable.

Using the engineering consulting work it did for Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony as a model, IBM has formed a new "technology-collaboration solutions" unit that's expected to post $4 billion in revenue this year. Internal projections call for that division to hit $10 billion by 2010 and $20 billion by 2015.

funny how shit comes around

I remember when anything consumer level IBM pretty much sucked.. they did great at 1st then went to hell.. then they stuck with their server products.. now they are all high tech again and doing well in the video game processor sector

who'd a thunk?

Well when they were selling PPC processors for Macs I read I think it's only 1-2% sales of there total hardware, so when Apple switched to Intel it didn't affect them a lot.

They did do the CPU for game cube as well cool.gif.

*huggles my PPC Mac Mini*

Wasn't a big part of Apple's decision to switch processors the fact the IBM couldn't give them the volume of processors they needed? I had to wait nearly a month on my dual G5 being built a couple of years ago, and the rumour at the time was that Apple couldn't get enough CPU's. Coupled with IBM's inability to give Apple a G5 cool enough to put in a laptop ... it came as no surprise that the 360 gets so hot smile.gif

well put xboxexpert.

p.s. My father worked at IBM when they were developing these chips..I specifically recall the PS3 chips being developed at my fathers particular fab. And now he works at Qimonda (use to be called Infineon) making the ram chips for the 360 (maybe other systems)...go figure.
