Should be an option in the game:

fun factor eh... cool. we'll create some more
serious battle type theme and also
fun factor style theme (in tune with your comparison, think bomberman)
Actually, another muso friend is really keen about this, he's gonna bring around(and lend us) a good synth pretty soon and we'll make something with that.

There's also another guy who's extremely interest and very talented. I told him I'd let him know once the game was ready for music. Since you're already working on it, I feel I should contact him and you guys can possibly discuss it. He's very talented, too.
He's "artynerd" on the forums... great guy.

Apr 23 2004, 02:32 AM
Cool. will contact artynerd then...
btw. with regards to fun factor style music... how fast will the game be? Cause exciting style music is normally quite fast. This probably wouldn't suit a tank game where you're rolling around at 20km an hour...also the colours in the game are very natural and deep. Rather than bright, exciting colours... this too might make bomberman style music sort of not fit in...
Let me know what you think.
The unProfessional
Apr 23 2004, 05:53 PM
Tanks will be a bit faster than actual spec, just to make things a bit more exciting. Not only that, but an abrams tank tops out around 45 mph on even terrain, which is pretty damn fast considering the tonage. They won't be ridiculous rice rockets, unless it's some special case, but they'll be quick. I'm hoping for the deathmatch to be fairly intense, so the music shouldn't be too soft. My "fun factor" comment wasn't referring to the music... it was referring to how goofy sounds could add some fun factor to the game as an alternative sound track. Sorry for the confusion
Tough to say how fast-paced the game is. It's dependent on the size of the particular map and the # of players involved. But as a sucker for fast-paced destruction, that's what I'm be going for. The natural looking environment should be able to co-exist with a reasonably intense soundtrack. Take, for instance, something like UT2004 with a very impressive natural environment, but extremely intense action.

In respect for him and his getting involved the music very early on, I should let him oversee the creation of the game music. However, due to the nature of this project and the fact that it's a fun endeavor, I'd like for the truly interested people to be recognized. There has been a huge surge in interest for the music. What we could do is have the original score/soundtrack done by me, then have a "Jihad fanatics soundtrack", or a"music inspired by Jihad" soundtrack as an add-on/expansion download or something.
As much as I want this to be a fun group project, I also want to take it seriously. By that I mean that this project could be an excellent showpiece in my portfollio for something I might like to do for a living; compose/perform music. By doing a complete, full-range score, I can demonstrate my musical abilities. I'm always looking for places to get my foot in the door, and this is a great opportunity.
But as far as having dozens of people contribute to the soundtrack, I think it would be best to include a consistant/cohesive soundtrack, and then have a separate "music inspired by" section. Could be a possibility, it's done with movies ALL the time.

I have no problem with you doing the primary soundtrack, since you were the first to show serious interest.

i think u shiould start a sub thread, and while u can determien the first 10 songs or whatevr, have us, liek us other 3 who are insterested, and have us each pick 2 songs or sumthing, or have a poll on it.

Only problem with that is that there would be no consistency.
I thought Artynerd was saying that you have alternate themes. Ie, complete SFX/soundtrack.
So Artynerd makes the official Jihad soundtrack. And then others can submit theirs to The unProfessional & Arty to be put as an optional soundtrack/theme in the game.

I agree with Arty though. It's hard to put your foot down sometimes without being a dick. I mean it wouldn't make sense to have 15 different songs playing back to back. It would just annoy you and you would stop playing. You don't see Van Gogh painting the face of a character, then handing it over to Gauguin to finish. I mean it wouldn't match. Yes, they are both talented, but in their own style.
It would make sense to just chose from teh menu what soundtrack you want to listen to and then the game will start with it. If you want screaming guitars, then pick it. If you want thinking music, then you pick that. Obviously you would have to agree when it comes to multiplayer.
Since we're not at the point of music yet, I would just starting making your tunes at home idley and not get stressed out about it. Then when the time comes, you have something to show for. Of course, don't got off and do 50 songs between now and then, but just something that gives the flavor.
I'm not really sure what you guys were talking about earleri with cartooney sfx. Why would i want to hear a dinging sound if i just launched a large shell into the terrain in front of me and dirt and everything is being kicked up? I want to see my TV rumble with intensity with every shot fired, and hear the engine grinding and feel the tank treads tearing into the ground. With the alpha version now, without any sound you can almost imagine that you're driving RC tanks (which is not the point), so adding cartooney sounds will only add to that kiddy-ness of the game, which is not exactly what i had in mind.
I'll talk with Pro, but it's his decision inevitably.

Yeah, we're not really goin for the goofy thing. If we add a goofy sfx library, it'll be optional, but i doubt many will use it.

Ok guys, here's the deal. The middelware is giving us the biggest problem. UnPro started with Tomak and they promised lots of support and patches and.... they totally died. So everyone using that was left with nothing. He looked into some others, but they aren't really for vehicles too much. So Novodex looked the most promising from there. Except it costs 1 grand. So... we're stuck between consantly fixing aroudn with the old one to get it to work, or coming up with 1,000 dollars. If it were only cheaper, I'm sure we'd consider it more.

1 grand, and you even gave it a thought!!! Homebrew all of a sudden got a bit more serious to me. Please don't pay any money, no matter it's cheaper, it'd destroy the homebrew feeling. Too bad about Middleware(is that a company or something, I recognize that name very well from somewhere?). Have they COMPLETELY dropped out? I Perhaps their employer didn't like them doing stuffs on the side (pretty unnecessary to wonder I guess).
hope this isn't the last we see from the project (and I don't believe so either), considering all the incredible amount of time you've spend.
Good luck fellas, you truly deserve it.

No, it's not the last of Jihad, for sure. At the very least, I'll just have to stick with dozens of workarounds and substandard friction in tokamak. Basically, they apply only static friction, and kinetic friction is mostly out of the equation (or so it seems after worlds of tests). Restitution/bounciness is also poorly tunable. <sigh> I could go on and on. Tokamak is a free library, and I assume the guys who were creating it found it as a hobby. But, for reasons untold, they've disappeared.
I'm hoping to get Novodex... for much less than a grand.

Well in some sense you're right. Homebrew is supposed to be about having fun and giving something to the community that the game companies don't. But the problem is that with the more powerful these systems are becoming, they require more assets, and the public demands more. I'm sure we could just put out what we have now and say "there, done. enjoy". But it would be ass, and I would not feel proud to put my name on it, and i'm sure UnPro would feel the same. We want something that can get released and play well from teh start. Too many games are put out and they know they're buggy and just keep putting out patches after patches. That's gay. Spend the extra few months and make it solid. Leave the patches for unforseen errors or extras.
Also from our position, it's a nice way to showcase what we can do. If it becomes popular enough, you never know, we might integrate more into the gaming industry. But worry not. Even if we drop $1,000 or $100,000 into this game (doubtful, but who knows), it's still gonna remain homebrew. We're not trying to pass the charges over to you guys. The only difference will be that it'll be better and more fun!

BTW, nice art history reference, Neil
I find that the visual arts and music have a lot in common. I practised visual arts my whole life until I started writing music at ~16. It's kinda funny, I have years and years of formal art training, history, theory, yet I feel more passionate about my music, which I have absolutely no training whatsoever.
