Sony has been saying that it sees its new next-gen machine, the PlayStation 3, as more of a computer than a console. Terra Soft Solutions is now making Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 available for download for the PS3, taking that idea a step closer to reality.

The operating system will be rolling out in three stages. The first starts today, November 27, and users can obtain the software from YDL.net. The second starts December 11, when customers can buy DVDs from the Terra Soft store, priced at $99.99--the final phase is due sometime during the week of December 25, when downloads will be available via public mirrors. Once the software is released for download on the public mirrors, it will be free of charge.

To install Yellow Dog Linux, users must first split the PS3's drive into two partitions so that the GameOS and Linux can run on dual partitions. The gamer will also need a USB keyboard and mouse to run the operating system. The installation manual is available on Terra Soft's Web site.

That's way overpriced dry.gif

Looks like I'll have to acquire it by other means if possible...
kizmet
lol how is free overpriced? do you want them to pay you to use it?
stebbo
Gggrrrr, it wont let me sign up for some reason... Anyone know a coupon code?
slurrey
Yeah I'm kinda stuck too, I need a damn coupon code tongue.gif

As for them charging money to get it early, I think that's WAY too much cash just to be able to play with YDL a month early. I'd pay 20 bucks for it tops.

isn't the whole idea of linux and open source software not to pay a fee in $ and just help in developing the community and lead to the free development of homebrew and free abstract idea programming?

ok, i'm broke
stebbo
It's on Pirate Bay boys, as it's freeware, I don't see a problem with me saying that.
epsilon72
w00t! someone finally uploaded it! biggrin.gif

The software is free and open so, technically, you're paying for the technical support.
In a week you'll be able to buy the DVD version with tech support, and in 2 weeks you'll be able to downloading for free, without tech support obviously.

Here's the torrent link, you can download, burn and install, completely legal:

I installed YDL last night, the install process went extremely smooth (much better than crappy Fedora). Also, the graphical installer is 720p, so it looked nice on my TV smile.gif More good news is the install takes about 1 hour, which is half the time it takes to install Fedora.
Anyway, went I went to boot up the system, fsck returned an error when it went to start checking the filesystem. I'm guessing I messed something up when I was partitioning. I'm going to try re-partitioning and reinstalling tonight when I get home from work. But, if anyone else sees an error relating to "libdevmapper" when fsck tries to run, please let me know.

OK, so it must have been a partitioning error. I repartitioned and reinstalled, and everything works great. If anyone else has an HDTV, YDL looks *awesome* in 720p. I had used e17 (YDL default desktop) before, and they've made it even better. There's still a few things that didn't seem to be working properly, ie: booting to ps3 game os from the main menu returned an error, and the yellowdog 5.0 yum repositories don't seem to be working yet. Also, the package manager tells me I don't have a network connection, when I obviously do. Other than a few little things, it seems like they did a really good job of it.

So, has anyone gotten this to run yet?

What option did you pick for partitioning your drive? How much space does YDL 5 take up?

Kinda cool. Sucks that you have to run it from command line and that you can't use the PS3 controller to play the games.
mrRobinson
It does run slower than I even thought it would. It took over 5 seconds for the firefox window to even open. I can't believe i played nibbles on a PS3, talk about overkill.
