I've been trying to accomplish this for the last hour, but I'm at a loss, so I was hoping someone here could explain to me like I'm a 6-year old. How do I create a DOS boot CD with mtkflash?

Follow the instructions in Textbook's tutorial.

Dos boot cd doesn't help you.You better buy a usb memory disc(kingston or hp 256-512 mb) and download extreme boot maker 0.36 as well as the firmware. That's what you need apart from working sata controller

And why do you say that?

The link doesn't work, but I tried "Xtreme Boot Maker" which created a directory called XBF on my C: drive containing a bunch of files and folders, but what do I do with this?

I'm supposed to create a dos boot disk and add mtkflash to it, so you would think that you could do the same with a CD-R, but I don't know how to create a DOS boot CD and add the mtkflash files to it.

Its easy to make a boot CD in nero.

How do you expect to dump your firmware onto a CD? With no floppydrive or usb pen you will need to run mtkflash off a HDD.

LOL, you've got a point there. I think I misunderstood the flashing procedure. smile.gif

Could you elaborate on that? It always says to use a floppy or a usb flash memory stick, but what's preventing me from doing it from the HDD? If it's not possible to do it from the HDD, I've got a regular USB HDD (WD Passport), would that work?

IMO you have 2 options.

1. Put mtkflash or samread on your main hdd and use a boot cd to get into dos. The problem with this is that your main HDD is probably formated with NTFS which dos doent support. (although there are utilities to get dos to read NTFS)

2. Its possiple to boot from a USB harddrive providing your motherboard supports bototing from usb hdd. So you will need to check your BIOS.

Actually I noticed I could set "USB storage device" to "Floppy" in BIOS, but I didn't know what to put on the USB HDD to get it to boot. Anyway, I'm not going to keep banging my head against this brick wall anymore, I'll just fix myself a proper DOS floppy at work tomorrow.

Thanks for all the replies!
