I recently installed a bigger HD in my box, and did a softmod, so I could store my games and use XBMC, etc. What I was wondering is if I can still use that xbox to play games online with if I actually use the original game. Any info is appreciated

Did you ever use the xbox on Live before you did the hd upgrade?. If no then as long as you use a retail game and cold boot with it in the drive you're good to go.
If you already used the xbox online before the upgrade then the answer is no unless you find someone with a virgin eeprom and flash it to your mobo. M$ can tell if you've upgraded the hd when the eeprom and hd dont match (which results in a ban). Flashing a virgin eeprom, installing a new hd and going on Live for the first time will marry the two together and M$ will be none the wiser.
you can play online with "backup" games if you use xlink or xbc ..
