can i patch a xbe and run it from the hardrive but insteded of copying the whole game down to the hd.

here an examples
i have mame burned to a dvdr but i want to use the new release but i don't want to re burn it can i point and ini to to the roms folder ?

i bought (legal) halo but want to use the patch can i just copy the xbe and run the rest from the dvd ?
