I bought x-box #2 yesterday and I finally got the openxbox installed and working. In case you haven't read my rantings, my first x-box died (I'm now thinking it was a random short, the pad I said was damaged is suppose to be sunk in anyways). Anyways, here's my advise:

Be SUPER careful on pad#2 for the openxbox... I think it was the hardest.

And secondly, count out "one-one-thousand" everytime you touch the soldering iron anywhere near the motherboard... and take it off as soon as you're done saying it biggrin.gif

Lastly, point #9 isn't THAT hard... in my opinion at least.

I have the original BIOS disabled, and connected the Openxbox to point #9 on the bottom of the motherboard. GL everyone!

Now to get my PC to see my x-box and FTP into it....

-Last note, hooking the ribbon cable in backwards doesn't fry it, mine still works.

ZildjianKX: Glad it finally worked out for you ! gift.gif

Did you use Lik-Sang's recommended way of soldering (the brown wire close to the parallel port) or the reverse way that was discussed in this forum earlier (brown wire close to X1/X2 points) ?

Also, let us know if you had any issues connecting the OpenXbox to the PC.

ZildjianKX
I have wire #9 wired to the bottom of the motherboard to the openxbox chip, and no wire 10 since I don't want the original BIOS (big HD). The PC picked it up first time I installed it, no problems. I also had an issue of the lid shorting out the chip when the metal touched it, it would turn off three times, then flash, but the chip survives and works fine. I really don't know how anyone in the forums can kill the chips, they are more durable by far than the x-boxes. GL guys.

Thanks for the reply.

I was actually asking for the FLAT RAIBOW COLORED RIBBON CABLE that connects to the OpenXbox (shown here). How did you place that cable ? Was the brown wire at the end close to the top of the OpenXbox PCB (i.e. close to the Parallel Port) or close to the bottom (i.e. close to the open solder pads).

Also, when soldering to the LPC points on the Xbox motherboard, did you follow this diagram or a different one ?

Thanks in advance for your reply !

bubun:
Install just like those pictures and you should be fine. Brown wire on top, towards the case fan. The major thing I noticed when installing this mod is that wire length for point 9 and 10 have to be as short as possible. I was having problems with one, I shortened the wires and it booted just fine.

limbfilter: Thanks very much !!! Highly appreciate your reply !

Did you use the Lik-Sang supplied wires for point# 9 & 10 ? Or did you use your own very thin Kynar wires ?

I did not use those wires. They suck donkey balls! They are too think and my solder didn't cling to it at all. I ripped up a 486 and pulled the wires that went from the motherboard to the power switch and I used those. Give me a pm if ya have anymore questions. wink.gif biggrin.gif

did you twist wire 9 and 10?

hum I think I need to go buy those wires at radioshack or use an hard drive cable right?

Have a bunch of those hard drive cables = P jester.gif

BTW how did you manage to remove the 2 original wires?

limbfilter
yep twisted 9 and 10. always twist the wire.

9 and 10 were not attached to the modchip for me.

to remove use a clean soldering iron and tap the tip on the wire and slowly pull. Should come right off.

Another Success Story....

Just installed my Bioxx this morning. I found it to be easier then I thought originally. Point #9 was the biggest pain in the ass (like everyone says) but I managed to get it with a little patience and a steady hand. I used all of the original lik-sang wires and everything is looking good. I cracked the locking mechanism on the external serial port head but that didnt mess anything up. Flashed with EvoX 2.4. I really don't have any soldering experience at all (A few days in 7th Grade Tech class but that's about it) and I found the process overall to be pretty simple. I hope that gives you guys a little confidence for those afraid of messing something up. To be honest, it takes more common-sense then it does solder experience to get the job done. Next project is changing to a swappable external HDD.
