Is it really necessary to use the Sony HDMI Cable for the PS3?
Or could you use a standard HDMI cable that is meant for connecting your TV to an HD receiver?

Well since the PS3 is HDMI v1.3 afair., you should keep away from the cheap cables, since they are mostly not v1.3, buying more expensive cables, ex. tech-link or the original sony cables, you will be able to get the best sound, with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD, and support for 30, 36 and 48bit color, where 1.0 is 24bit only..
