After reading allot on making backups and playing backups I thought i'd give it a go. I searched about trying to find the easiest method for myself and booting the drive to slax then windows got my Hitachi-LG (MODEL:GDR-3120L ROM VER: 0047DJ) recognised in windows but I can go no further. I've tried using a Maximus tool to extract the firm ware but it says "cannot read file from disc" am I doing something wrong, I'm also having trouble with the drive ejecting all the time.

read this document, maximus tool should work but is better suited for v78.
Releases, Tuturial And Guides in you will find info about Hitachi Garyopa v2.3 (recommended for version 47).
