So up to this point I've been burning my games on Verbatim disks with only an occasional bad burn. However, they usually run about $2.50 a disc, so i decided to try out some of the cheapo Dynex discs, which run about $1.00 a piece. I figured I would get more bad burns than before, but I've gone through four discs and all are coasters. It's weird, everytime I put the disc in the 360, it says "Unplayable Disc". And something else... With the Verbatim disks, when you put a backup in the computer, it says "XBOX360" as the name of the disk under My Computer. However, the Dynex discs, after they have been burned and put in a PC drive, it just shows the PC drive as "CD Drive." I have a Hitachi drive if that makes a difference and I am using CloneCD. Should I try a different program or what is the problem?

People on various online retailer websites are saying "Works great with XBOX 360" and similar comments regarding other brands of dual layer media. Surely Verbatim cant be the only compatable brand of media for the modified xbox 360.

no one ever said that smile.gif , simply higher success rate for burning, better compatibility to x360 drive (less a problem with newer firmware), less of a tendency to degrade with time.

Look at sites cdfreaks.com for the detail of quality and burn to see that in double layer the margin is pretty significant.

That being said, it works with others brand, the compatibility thread is full of example. just lot less hassle with verbs wink.gif .

Yeah, but what DVD-ROM drive, what firmware revision, what burner/firmware? These are just a few of the variables that can determine weather or not cheap discs work. It's no secret that Sammy drives have a tendency to be more forgiving of cheap quality media, and as always no two DVD-ROM drives will read the exact same things (even drives with the exact same version and firmware revision). This is one of the many reasons why so many of us recommend Verbatim since they are by far the most universally compatible/durable D/L media for sale to the public. This is regardless of drive or application. None of the other media manufacturers have been able to nail down the kind of success that Verbatim/MKM has and that is why you see them recommended far more than any other D/L media. As for the pricing, where are you located? Given your post I would guess somewhere in North America. You can get Verbatim for significantly less than $2.50 a disc on a regular basis. http://www.newegg.com and http://www.rima.com have them in 20 packs for just under $40 shipped and Newegg currently has a sale on the 20 packs for $37 shipped or $1.85 a disc. Best Buy also has the 20 packs on sale for $30+tax every couple of months or so. If you are located in Canada, about once a month Futureshop has sales on the same 20 packs for anywhere between $25-$30CDN. So no reason whatsoever for you to be paying $2.50 a disc for Verbs if you keep an eye out for sales at the places that I have mentioned. I haven't payed more than $2 a disc for D/L Verbs in the last 18 months and I usually get them for about $1.50 a disc. wink.gif

are people still debating over this?

do people really not have 30 bucks for a proven burner, and 2 dollars max for the disc to backup your 63 dollar initial investment of a game?

are you really so cheap you would rather spend your time in XS finding a solution to a problem thats had a solution since the beginning?

PLEASE do us a favor and read the backup faq before posting.

I have already purchased a brand new Pioneer DVR-112D for this task. I have also purchased 2 brands of DVD+R DL media.

I dont know what its like in the USA but here in the UK Verbatim branded discs are approx 3 times the price of other premium brands of DVD Dual Layer media. A box of cheap Dual layer is £6 for 10, Verbatim is £17 for 10. I have used Verbatim discs at work in my job and have had failures with Verbatim discs in many drives. I feel Verbatim like TDK and other brands are hyped up to be better than they actually are. I have burnt thousands of discs over the years and providing the burner is good cheap media works just as well as the expensive stuff. I cant vouch for this with Dual layer media however but i would imagine the situation is the same.

As for reading the forum, i have read pratically every post in my intrest areas in the past 2 weeks. If the search facility worked and didnt error out perhaps i could find information easier biggrin.gif

Thats the first step my friend! I just bought one of those and it solved all my problems, in my eyes the better UK setup is probably;

Pioneer 112D DVD-RW Drive - £25-30
Samsung DVD Drive (With Kreon) - £16-17
Infiniti 360 2.4x DVD+R DL Media (Coincidental Name?) - £19.99 for 25
