Xbox360 Homebrew in Progress: MAME360, ScummVM

We got this interesting email from a trusted developer that wishes to remain anonymous for now. He has been working on a port of MAME and ScummVM for the Xbox360 for some time now. The development and pictures below are from a devkit, but with the recent Hypervisor Exploit (kernel 4532/4548 only for now) there's hope you'll be able to run this on a retail Xbox360 some day:
In light of the recent 360 hack and possibility of widespread homebrew in the future, I wanted to share some news with you and X-S.
I've been working on a port of MAME to the 360. I call it 'MAME360'.
Now for a bit about the project: * It's based on MAME 0.112 and is fairly easy to keep up-to-date (doesn't need any messing around with like Mameox on the xbox). * Originally it was based on SDLMAME but I've since ported a 360 specific osd layer (so SDL for the 360 exists - as an aside I also have a port of ScummVM in the works too). * Mame doesn't include any dynarec cpu emulation on anything other than an x86 platform. So any game that is PSX or N64 based for example doesn't run at all well. * Most other stuff (that I've tried) runs pretty well. * At the moment it will only run on 360 dev/debug/test kits. Whether it will ever run on a hacked retail box remains to be seen.
let me be the first to say.... awesome
I'm glad there's development ongoing even without a fully hacked platform...

This is AWESOME!! This is a great way to kick off the homebrew scene! Lets hope others will come in numbers to launch the new emulation revolution. Awesome proof of concept.

ive got the dash version with the vulnerability.. now i just need a way to [easily] exploit it.. i cant wait to try some homebrew firsthand.. thats when having two 360's pays off.
id say this is the true beginning.. hopefully someone will show some homebrew so amazing, that the want to hack the 360 will increase enough to find whatever solid vulnerability needs found.

It is sweet how it is not a fully hacked console yet people are working with devkits to create things. Awesome job.

cool to be able to start where games "kind of" started - at least for old schoolers.

Hell yeah I can almost taste homebrew on the 360.

OK, this is it. Seems I need to get a Xbox 360 today. My feeling says that it is possible to see this on a hacked retail box somewhere in 2007.

Great job!

It is you. The same type of you who also said that MC360 was fake.

Damn... I hope the 360 gets fully cracked soon. I'd LOVE to have MAME on the 360. The original XBox was a great platform for emulators, but MAME was one of the emulators with which it struggled for certain types of games (Midway, 3D, etc...).

Things are starting to move, quite quickly. This is a very good sign. A useful 360 hack (ie, the dvd firmware hack is not useful) is on the way

Know what sucks about this.......
Microsoft created the security for the Xbox 360 to prevent 1st - Piracy, 2nd homebrew or un-authorised code from running on the xbox 360.
With that being said - they took the second thing, HOMEBREW and tried to turn it around by offering code creators club and giving people the ability to create software for the Xbox 360. We have already seen Emulators and such created using the tools that Microsoft has offered the development community. Yet this development community isn't as exciting as it was when we got unsigned code to run on the original Xbox, if it was we wouldn't be looking for a way to run unsigned code still(as we are), we would just go buy a subscription to download from the official development community that already exist.
Now I hate to say it, I applaud Microsoft for all their efforts on the 360 - but with the community exploiting the 360 and offering every person the ability to run backups (with no modchip required-M$ do you remember dreamcast?) - and I think this was the one thing microsoft wanted to prevent, yet with a simple firmware flash m$ worst nightmare has come true.
As for the true hardcore users we have all fallen prey to the same security to prevent us from truely enjoying some of the best HOMEBREW Applications that await us. XBMC is probibly one of the best and only reasons to own an Xbox (these days) - and as I stream video through my Xbox on XBMC and type this - I hope and pray they find a way for us same users to use homebreew code sometime in the near future - as I like emulators too and I think that the 360 would be a great powerful alternitive to enjoying console games of the past, Homebrew emulation would make the 360 100 times better that Xbox live arcade, Wii VC and PS3 Download store combined
I am Quite excited by this news, but I only hope that the homebrew that we are all awaiting comes to us soon (X360MC) and that I can once and for all, retire my Xbox and exclusive fireup my 360 every day and continue to use the best media application that was ever coded.
PS: I have now coined the term for the next media center application for the Xbox 360, the XBMC team will not call it XBMC360 or XBMC2 it will be X360MC - or - 360MC, and the tag line for this new media center, next generation has finally come full circle, X360MC - ok so im ranting

well to clear things up. xna is a ok app my frend codes with it hes making a streets of rage type game for xna so to all those club members get ready for a good one he makes good shit and is a kickass gfx desiner and coder. where talking movie qualty stuff hear. xna is defently good in that world however its still sandbox modea and cant do stuff like online modes or any real apps like xbmc. emulation is also very hard to do. unlike modded mode that can do homebrew without any restrections.

Did the guy happen to mention if he was planning to release it in the wild? That would be sweet! Some people out there can run the exploit, after all.

This is awesome!!
I did kind of hope that things would get started off with a open developers kit first though.
Using Microsoft's dev kit and utilities will always be the best but it puts us down the same illegal path as the xbox.

I personally don't give a damn if apps developed by XeDK is illegal. It is the only proper way to create apps that are useful. XNA could kiss my ass! It restricts alot so it could go to hell.

Sweet, now if only people can figure out how to downgrade the kernel on newer retail boxes we are all set.
I wonder if XBMC team are secretly working on a 360 devkit

The only reason threads like this even exist, is because as usual MS doesnt listen to people. What would you rather, let the use of illegal pirated games and loose millions or.... Let us poor friekin people run unassigned code, maybe with a few restrictions... Xna doesnt cut it and never will.......

simply amazing I can see it now N64 games running perfectly on the 360!! I know this is by no means "around the corner" but a Mame 360 emu is a very good start. It only makes me think...what other apps are out there running on devkits??? I wish there was something the mass could do to help this effort, anyway keep up the GREAT work guys!!

maybe a video upload anyone who knows how to operate photoshop can make those pics. hell if i wanted i could say I made a N64 emulator and cut the corner of a screensshot of the dash and ,make it look just as real, don't shoot me down, just prove me wrong with a video upload. Forgive my skeptics, but Unsighned code is noe whatis running at all, if he has d development kit, than most likely as it says it may nebver run on a store bough hacked xbpox 360, and all of us thathave "hacked 360s only have the odd hacked f/w changed other than that we have not hacked anything, we are boooting 1/1 minus the media flag back-ups with the same parameters as a normal game.

Brill!! I cant wait untill they crack the new k's i hear there is no way of downgrading nowdays because Ms have blown the efuse's.. Where abouts is the kernel stored anyways? No chance or a chip being made so you can choose between kernels?

you are exactly right - this always comes up with pictures and people scream fake - some of my developer friends say they prefer to have the wired controllers connected because they do not "time out" like the wireless ones and also to save on batteries...
Anyways, awesome to see development continue on the 360 homebrew scene!
every step is closer and closer...

it says that it was tested only on a XDK360... And I thought you had access to everything while having the XDK360 so how is this anything special other than a basic homebrew app?
I'm confused on this whole thing then

Because it means as soon as a way to play unsigned code becomes available, we already have cool software up and running.
