Game developers are used to tight deadlines and pressure-packed schedules. Even so, Microsoft's XNA Challenge at this year's Game Developers Conference pushes the idea of quick turnaround to a ridiculous extreme. Four "teams" (two of them are single people) have been thrown into GDC's crowded, noisy Moscone Center North lobby and given four days to put together a game from scratch using Microsoft's XNA Game Studio Express.

Despite the common development environment, the four games being developed for the contest couldn't be more dissimilar. There's an overhead shooter, a collection-based platformer, a speech-controlled alien abduction simulator and a two-player, first-person, 3D dungeon crawl.

People are really going to line up to play them? And we will have to pay $100.00 to try them? Is XNA really moving that slow? This challenge is so stupid its funny! (and I loved the 1 man team bit laugh.gif)

I want to see a game that is completed in just 4 days. Those better be some damn good tools. smile.gif

Too damn true. At least major nelson is there to cuddle us when we get worked up, "it's a very complicated process!".

So is MS just paying these four "teams" to do this as a marketing tool to proove how XNA can be used?

If so, it's a waste of money.

Sure it's cool to know you can make a game in 4 days with XNA if you really wanted to, but there should be more of a point to it. Like, how about all 4 of the games are released as a free download on XBLA for all us gamers to see? Not only would that be very do-able for MS, and cool, but it would inspire all of us sitting at home to get XNA ourselves and show we can make a better game. This would mean this "4 day challenge" would serve 2 more purposes: A useful challenge to all XBL subscribers since we'd be able to play them, and it'd be a great marketing tool for XNA as it would cause tons of us XBL people to sign up.

Simply creating this 4-day challenge for the sake of GDC is ridiculous. But hey, MS has money to waste so I guess that's fine.
