From nytimes.com:
Moving to enhance its PlayStation 3 game console, Sony today plans to announce new online capabilities for it, meant to draw gamers into Sony's cyberspace community and allow them to share entertainment content they have created, à la YouTube.
The centerpiece, a new service called PlayStation Home, is to become available to consumers in the fall, said senior game industry executives, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the plans. PlayStation Home is meant to build on and surpass somewhat similar offerings from Sony's competitors Microsoft and Nintendo by allowing users to create persisting online identities that record players' achievements in different games. As players progress through a game, they will unlock various virtual prizes that they can then show off to friends and rivals, the executives said.
Phil Harrison, president of Sony's worldwide game studios, is expected to announce the new service today in San Francisco at the Game Developers Conference, the top convention for game designers and programmers.
i know it will never happen, but all three consoles need achievements and gamer scores. then link all three consoles to a central server that tallies up all your points from all three systems and makes your final score.
if you only own one system, then your score will be lower than someone who owns 2 or 3 of the systems. this would encourage users to purchase all 3 systems and games to better their gamer scores.
just a thought.

so you wouldn't want a choice of features, you want them all to copy off of each other?

It will be interesting to see what MS and Nintendo do once their features have been bettered. You would assume Sony is going to offer improvements on the current Achievement and Avatar features MS and Nintendo are sporting. But I guess because Sony is going to copy these features it basically gives MS and Nintendo the right to copy anything innovative that Sony's offers. You can't bite and not expect to get bitten back. And so the trend continues. It's great to have 3 consoles fighting to your business. All we need is the Wii sales to slow down so they wake up and realize some hard work is needed on their online features.
