ok, i managed to get round my problem. it was to do with the timing of when i was switchin the console on and off. now after the above part i get this message

"reading 00%"
"ERR : fail to open output file!"

Many of the cards come with a RAID tool. This tool needs to be installed from the installation CD. You just need to open up the contents of the CD and execute the setup.exe in some folder in there that will set it up. I did that and my card worked perfectly. Try uninstalling and then reloading everything with the card to see if setting it up again does the trick

use MTKflash commands...

To read firmware:
Mtkflash r /m orig.bin
Turn off Xbox 360
Choose your Drive
Wait 10 seconds
Turn Xbox 360 back on

Boot back into windows save bin and make sure its valid. Create Xtreme firmware. Put it on the memory stick.

Boot back into DOS,

To write hacked firmware:
Mtkflash w /m x52a.bin
Turn off Xbox 360
Choose your Drive
Wait 10 seconds
Turn Xbox 360 back on

sorted this now. it was all about timings. but i was using the MTKFLASH R /M /SATA ORIG.BIN and that seemed to work fine for me.
thanks
