Microsoft sees DRM-free music in Zune's future

From CNet news.com:

Microsoft plans to follow Apple in selling unprotected songs from EMI, though the company won't say just when such tracks will appear on the Zune Marketplace store.

When CEO Steve Jobs issued his open letter calling for an end to DRM, Microsoft said the total abolition of such protections would be irresponsible, since they are needed for subscription music and other new business models. However, the software maker said Wednesday that it does plan to offer DRM-free music from EMI and others.

"We've been saying for a while that we are aware that consumers want to have unprotected content," said Zune marketing director Jason Reindorp. Reindorp said he did not have a time frame for when unprotected songs will be added to the store.

Seriously, please, enough with the Zune. Last I checked this is Xbox Scene, not Zune Scene, and it has zero to do with games (it's a pipe dream guys). The whole article is reactionary anyways to Apple's progress in the area. Not like the Zune doesn't do non-drmed purchased music as is. It plays unprotected AACs from the Apple store! Oh teh noes!

still kick-ass though, a lot easier to backup your music and such now smile.gif

If a quality product comes out of it, I'm not going to complain. This is what happens in a free market...

MS? Quality Product? Call me crazy, but I think you've got the wrong company somehow. The 360 is one of the only things I've seen out of them that could be called "quality", but even at that? They are a bit on the error prone side killing the "quality" aspect. Heck, the original Xbox was a quality product mainly due to stuff like XBMC.

You failed to notice the key word in my response: "If."
