It looks like the rumors were true. Responding to retailer and consumer demand, SCEA has confirmed to GameDaily BIZ that it will no longer sell the 20GB model of the PlayStation 3 in North America. SCEA's Dave Karraker said that they have decided to focus on the 60GB version.

Dave Karraker, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications at SCEA, issued GameDaily BIZ the following statement:
"Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America. Based on retailer and consumer feedback, we have decided to focus our current efforts on the more popular 60GB model."

Japan, on the other hand, continues to offer both the 20GB and 60GB, and there's "no word from them on changing their sku mix."

Mr. Me
Are you kidding me? The only reason me and some of my friends haven't bought one yet is cuz we can't find the 20 gig version in stock anywhere. Why pay $100 more for a hdd that I'm gonna replace anyways and some extra features that I'll never use. Sony is insane, the main reason it isn't selling that good here is cuz it cost so much, so they're dropping the cheaper version? Whatever, nothing they do makes sense lately.

I too was waiting to find a 20gb model. I hated the look of the 60gb (too much chrome), and I knew I would just upgrade the HD anyways. Wireless is always nice, but my house is wired for ethernet in every room since it is faster and more secure.

My only hope is that they lower the price of the 60gb, and make it look like the 20gb, since I can't stand all that chrome. This isn't the 50's...

Yeah OK LOL! What consumers are getting this feedback from? The ones that already purchased the 60gb version? Man Sony is getting lamer by the minute

thats kind of odd...they didnt even let it last in 1 year of production....maybe a price drop is coming on the 60gb here stateside?? ive still yet to purchase my 360 so im not interested except for the fact that this might push m$ into doing the same, dropping the core and price's.....

maybe sony is really bringing out that 80gb they pulled the patent for?!
twistedsymphony
This only makes sense if they're dropping the price of the 60GB version...

I'm quite disappointed as the lack of a cheaper version gives me less of a reason to buy one. dry.gif

Mr Invader
It seems that Sony is slipping. If a price drop is being planned already, then Sony is falling to the end of their rope.

Just my opinion

I assume you mean their gaming department. It would be nice if you were right, and they start doing things to win back the public.

What I mean is that Sony is trying to pick themsleves up after a horrible launch, it seems that they are changing alot of things they were doing to see if the consumers will go with it. Whether it was getting rid of the $500 version, adding "home" that will (everything but) replace the current dashboard, and even changing the controller.

Sony patents new controller

When i say "falling to the end of their rope" i meant the console itself. They have already cancelled the 20gb in America due to consumer demands (aka costing them too much), and now a price drop might come around on the 60gb version. I see this as Sony doing everything they can to make people buy their product, because right now, they aren't.

I see no objection to a price drop, but its not going to be good for Sony's financial problems, the PS3 already costs too much to make.
